Good Points: Lots of descriptive prose. Links to geograhy, history and life experiences.
General comments: Mary Hoffman, Stravaganza: City of Masks - An excellent read. For those who have read and enjoyed Susan Cooper's "King of Shadows" and Philip Pullman's "Dark Materials," this is a must as it is reminiscent of both.
A boy suffering from cancer is transported to Bellezza - a city in the past with strong links to Venice. Whilst there he is involved in a plot to kill the Duchessa. The strong plot keeps the reader engaged. Recommended for 12+.
