“Transmission broke down at 20,000 kms., timing belt at...”

★★★☆☆

written by juan francisco lara. on 20/02/2003

Transmission broke down at 20,000 kms., timing belt at 45,000 kms. brakes and clutch need redoing every 15,000 kms. Drips oil everywhere and rattles like hell. Roof liner was changed by the agency and again is sagging. Little rust in the doors.

Land Rover's transmission is a very delicate and sensitive piece of machinery if you abuse the gears expecting them to change like a race car you are lucky to get up to 20,000 kms.The transmission should be treated gently and gear change should synchronise with you throttle to minimise clunks.I am driving my second land rover now,no problem with transmission.Normally transmission problems are cause by the user. Wrong gear box oil will also lead to a broken down transmission, only use ATF in your gearbox. As for timing belt try and get a heavy duty one to prolong life.

If you don't respect the work horse, you don't deserve a defender, and what are you doing with a work horse in the city? It has been built for mainly off road use!

Comments on the Land Rover Defender transmission and how to manage it are very useful as a new Land Rover driver is liable to generate the idea that a big strong car can be racked around any way at all.

This review reminds us that the contemporary Land Rover's 2.5 liter turbo-charged engine is interacting with a very heavy vehicle, with the transmission doing all the communicating of forces. Quick shifting with mismatches occuring between engine speed and transmission state is not going to work well for very long.
