Good Points: The Bonn Christmas Market is quite small and may be a good introduction to German markets. All the stalls are within easy walking distance of each other. A good selection of goods on sale. The main stores were also selling lovely Christmas goods.

Bad Points: Maybe not such a wide selection of goods as larger markets. Could be very busy especially at weekends.

General comments: My visit to Bonn Christmas market came after previous visits to the Frankfurt Market and initially I was quite disappointed. The market was a good deal smaller, occupying the square in front of the Cathedral but spilling out into some side streets. The range of goods was not as large but there were still some good quality Christmas goods and other handcrafts too. The Big Wheel and ice-rink added to the fun. There did not seem to be the same number of 'out of towners' arriving in coaches as there was in Frankfurt, nor quite the same number of British visitors. Although at first I was disappointed, once I had spent some time at the market and examined the range of goods I began to think that perhaps "small is good". It was also fairly easy to travel out of the city centre and visit smaller markets in neighbouring towns and even the city suburbs. Perhaps the proximity to the small but beautiful Bonn Cathedral helped to remind the shoppers of the real meaning of Christmas.
