The Ford Cougar V6 24v Sports Car is a piece of american built junk that costs loads of money to maintain and always breaks down, absolutely unreliable, DON'T BUY IT!!!

I was so happy when i got in my brand new Ford Cougar.
I brought my cougar Nov last year (01). It was pre-registered 2000 on a W plate, so I had a brand new car for a second hand price bargain, I picked it up with only 47 miles.
Two months later with 2293 miles on the clock my engine blew-the first engine was faulty. (Lucky I had a warranty) the engine was replaced with a brand new one.
Ford needed my car for two weeks to sort out the engine, so they provided me with a ford KA, not quite the vehicle I would have expected, especially as I drive up and down motorways all week.
I've recently discovered that the foot wells fill up with rain water (something to do with the drain tubes from the sunroof) so that also needs to be sorted.
The CD changer stopped working (Error 5-whatever that means). So I took it in to be repaired and ford had to send it away. When it arrived back ford some how lost all my six CD's which were jammed in there.
The backs seat were incorrectly fitted-many people may not realise that their seat could be faulty.
I've used my warranty to its full potential and have not paid a penny for these problems to be rectified but that's not the point. These problems should not exist on a car of that stature.
Has anyone else had or heard of similar problems with their beloved cougar? If so please let me know.
The drive.
It's not too bad! It's not as fun as I thought it would be. The performance is a little weak. 0-60 is not really that quick-a little VW Lupo GTI or Golf is as quick.
I used to own a Nissan 200 sx Turbo and that seamed to be much quicker. Mid range speed is good, it holds most of it performance between 30-100.
Braking is also a little soft comparing it to the Nissan!
Cornering is alright, the suspension could do with being a bit stiffer but the ride will not be as comfortable.
It is not a sports car! It is a luxury car.
I love the car and love the ride; I don't understand why more people didn't buy one.
Overall I'm not happy with the car yet....if I don't get anymore problems then I'll grow to love it again.

Sounds like you've been particularly unlucky with your Cougar.

Re the engine blowing - it's the first I've heard of - including Mondeos which also came with essentially the same Duratec V6.

It isn't as fast as a 200SX but then in this class, what is.

Re visibility - its a coupe so what do you expect. COmparing it with a late 200sx it does have poort visibility, but compare it with a Fiat Coupe, Alfa GTV, Celica and the like and it isn't too bad. After a month I found it very easy to maneuver.

Hope you've had the last of your problems.

My engine had just blown. Apparently the low oil pressure light doesn't come on until the little ends and crank bearings have run without oil for considerable mileage.

Wonderful.

Sounds like you have a lemon. Can't say this is my experience of owning a Cougar V6 at all. Services have not cost any more than £130 a time and I have owned the car for over 3 years and it has now done over £50K miles and has been utterly reliable, average MPG comes in around 25 - 32 MPG, it has plenty of space and if driven properly the only oil burners that can out accelerate it are the big BMW/Mercs which are at least 3.0L and seriously expensive.

I think the comments made by this person are
untrue. Perhaps his/her car has been abused.
Sounds a bit like sourgrapes from an onlooker to me.
Also a short course in spelling wouldn't go amiss

I totaly disagree with your review of this car.

I have lived in Germany where I bought a brand new 24v v6 cougar and have now exported the same car into the UK.

Previously I owned an OPEL (VAUXHAL) CALIBRA 2.5l.
NOW THAT WAS A LEMON. It continulay gave me problems and went through 2 engines, the last involving a cracked cylinder head and a bill for Dm5000 ( 2500 euro). In Germmany you cannot get re-conditioned engines.

The cougar is a superb autobahn cruiser, and I reguarly have done Frankfurt to Calais some 600 odd KMS via Koln,Brussels,Liege,OStend along the E6 in about 5 hours on my way back to South west england. IF ANYTHING I HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THAT RING ROAD AROUND BRUSSELS & IF YOU FORGIVE ME BELGIUM DRIVERS WHO ARE WORSE THAN GERMANS FOR TAILGATING. The COUGAR sits without any effort at 160KMS (100MPH) for the entire journey and I still have another 55MPH(80KPH) in hand.

The car has almost done 44000KMS with no problems.

If you own a car like this you need to have it reguarly serviced by FORD. Ask the garage (AUTOHAUS) if they service the COUGAR's of other owners.
