Bought one year ago and have had endless problems, including suspension, leaking boot and flooded passenger footwell, wheel bearings wearing quickly, parts are expensive and hard to come by (here in Ireland, although not much better in uk either) latest problem was with flywheel - cost '1500 inc labour. So have had to scrap the car as this is about the current price of one that works! When it did work it was comfortable but very bad on fuel, approx 18mpg on average but less when in traffic and when...

I was looking for a decent kind of motor that fitted my personality and After 3 visits to the same car sales place the big cat tempted me. 24v V6 with a custom chrome rear-split exhaust, it just hooked me in. Just spent £930 getting the front tyres replaced, passenger front-bearing, both front hub/discs and brake pads replaced, 2 bushes, 2 rear brake pads, full service and total check with a blue-fin upgrade for the map. Now she purrs like a dream and with the roar of the K and N air filter...

Truly amazing car for the money. Bought last November for £2150. 2 owner, 43,594 miles with full history. It's a beautiful, roomy, GT cruiser that eats tarmac with consumate ease. I love driving on long open roads and just driving and driving and driving...! Around town there's nothing better than a summer's day with the windows down, rock n roll blaring from the cd player and just cruising through the traffic to your destination. And of course all of this with a wide appreciative grin. The...

The Cougar has been utterly reliable, it's not as expensive to run as one would expect from a V6, driven at standard motorway speeds I've seen nearly 40mpg and you really don't need to drive it hard as it has plenty of low and mid-range torque. It will plod along at 30mph in 4th gear, 90 mph is achieved in 5th gear at just below 4,000 rpm, which is only just at the beginning of the main power band. Running costs are lighter than most equivalent sports/coupe's as the basic car is really a Ford...

I have found the Cougar to be a really great drive and lots of fun and ofcourse you get the looks as there are not that many left on the road (not that Ford really marketed them properly). My Cougar is the 2.5 V6 X pack 2000 Silver Automatic which I brought 10 months ago with 56K miles on the clock from a second owner. What a lovelly coupe ford have produced - not sure why it was not more popular? Stylish, sexy, robust, spacious, practical and economical comes to mind. Yes it has its weaknesses as many cars do - visibilty when reversing, heavy doors, tiny wing mirrors, special tyres. But the shear drivability (driving experience - if thats a word) of this coupe is amazing - powerful,...

I've owned my 2.5L V6 Ford Cougar since April 2001 and still get a tremendous buzz from driving it. It has everything I want from a car...roomy, comfortable and I think that V6 Duratec engine makes such a great roar under full throttle! The Ford Cougar is a sharp looking car, even 10 years after launch, but the stock items performance doesn't quite match the looks, although the car does respond favourably to some engine modifications, mostly by removing the in-built restrictions that Ford seem to incorporate into their cars, one such example of this is the standard exhaust system which is of poor design and very restrictive and if you are a petrolhead who likes to hear the musical qualities that an engine type such as the V6 can...

Had a year now, good response from the 2.5 v6, torque is fantastic you can cruise at 15mph in 5th and still pull away, 0-60 just over 7 secs. Only prob you get is a noise in cold weather for the first few minutes when you let the revs drop to tic over, this is known as "moosing" but it doesn't damage the car, it is the IAC (Idle Air Controller) valve. Go for the X-pack, I have slightly modded mine, uprated sports brakes, got rid of the 2ft long aerial for a silver stubby 1, and added a little BMW...

I like the looks, it means you can have a family size car that is a bit different. The boot is huge, more so with the rear seats down. The auto has an overdrive box and 70 MPH is only 2,500 RPM, so it is really only just ticking over, and accelerates well at any speed due to the excellent torque of the engine. You can turn...

In response to request re. decent qualities tyres- I have a Renault Megane coupe with similar sized tyres- the Toyo Proxes T1R range is an ultra high performance tyre with superb grip, durability, wet and dry handling as well as comfort- it is in my opinion best tyre for the money, should be able to get some for just less than £100 per tyre for this size (but they will last!!!!)- good luck.

Sounds like you have a lemon. Can't say this is my experience of owning a Cougar V6 at all. Services have not cost any more than £130 a time and I have owned the car for over 3 years and it has now done over £50K miles and has been utterly reliable, average MPG comes in around 25 - 32 MPG, it has plenty of space and if driven properly the only oil burners that can out accelerate it are the big BMW/Mercs which are at least 3.0L and seriously expensive.

I totaly disagree with your review of this car.

I have lived in Germany where I bought a brand new 24v v6 cougar and have now exported the same car into the UK.

Previously I owned an OPEL (VAUXHAL) CALIBRA 2.5l.
NOW THAT WAS A LEMON. It continulay gave me problems and went through 2 engines, the last involving a cracked cylinder head and a bill for Dm5000 ( 2500 euro). In Germmany you cannot get re-conditioned engines.

The cougar is a superb autobahn cruiser, and I reguarly have done Frankfurt to Calais some 600 odd KMS via Koln,Brussels,Liege,OStend along the E6 in about 5 hours on my way back to South west england. IF ANYTHING I HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THAT RING ROAD AROUND BRUSSELS & IF YOU FORGIVE ME BELGIUM DRIVERS WHO ARE WORSE THAN GERMANS FOR TAILGATING. The COUGAR sits without any effort at 160KMS (100MPH) for the entire journey and I still have another 55MPH(80KPH) in hand.

The car has almost done 44000KMS with no problems.

If you own a car like this you need to have it reguarly serviced by FORD. Ask the garage (AUTOHAUS) if they service the COUGAR's of other owners.

I think the comments made by this person are
untrue. Perhaps his/her car has been abused.

My 1999 2.5 Ford Cougar V6 24v cost me £5k and was worth every penny and a little more. She has tonnes of street cred and style. Fuel consumption is 22-32 mpg depending on the amount of abuse on right pedal. Suprising amount of room in rear for kids, but adults hit head lining. I just love the roar of the V6 as you power from 30-70mph in the blink of an eye....
