Good Points: Totally free It is the only free software to block zero day hacker/spyware/trojans/worm attacks Developed by a team of experts working on large enterprise software - so should work well.
Bad Points: Beginners may have some trouble understanding it at the outset. Large download if on dial up.
General comments: Prevx Home is compact and seems to work as promised. A quick web search seems that it is actually the only piece of software that can block spyware/hackers/worms etc, which can be a real pain once they access your computer and are left there. It is a very forward looking piece of software that is trying to tackle what Prevx see as a problem - namely the fact that anti virus software simply cannot cope against a new era of internet nasties. The reason being most AV software relies on updates - which are too slow because people are often targeted before their AV package has had time to update, or even recognise a threat.
The interface is user friendly and sits on your toolbar without being too distracting however It may cause confusion for novice users in much the same way personal firewall software such as ZoneAlarm does because it works on an 'allow or not allow' basis.
Any time that an application attempts to access system memory or critical files or alter the registry Prevx Home detects the activity and either blocks it completely or asks the user how to proceed. This means it will detect and prevent buffer overflows and overruns, modification of critical files and directories, unauthorized changes to critical areas of the system registry and more.
Easily worth installing this nice freebie before the big companies cotton on to what is going on and start trying to throw their weight around and charging for it. You can get it at https://www.prevx.com/homeoffice/homeoffice_homedownload.htm highly reccomended
