“Hellish maze with few signs”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Cochranhv370 on 29/04/2017

From getting off the train to getting on the plane the whole experience was like being lost in a crowded maze. The oyster card readers are nowhere near the train platforms so it looks like you missed them as you enter the airport. Then you get to security but you can't get through without a boarding pass, which means you need to find departures, on a different floor, there are no signs. Finding the right check in desk means wandering around departures as again there are no signs. After that you get to face the sociopathic machinations of airport security. Then more mazes where you might find nandos or wagamama if you are really lucky. Good luck finding the toilet though, it's about a 1 mile walk. It's obvious that Gatwick airport was designed by a skilled architect, however it's also clear he hated people and wanted them to suffer. 0/10, I've seen better airports in the third world. This place should be razed to the ground and rebuilt and the architects and builders tried for crimes against humanity.

“North Terminal Chaos”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Adams132 on 18/09/2015

Followed the Car Hire return signs to the North Terminal only to be told on the 2nd attempt that all returns are at the South.. Signs to the Hampton Hotel took you to dead ends, eventually found the way by leaving the terminal building and having to walk through the smoking area for the terminal really enjoyable experience. Return was just as bad, 40 minutes queuing in passport control as the e passport machines were not working and only 6 desks open! Non EU passport holders were getting through quicker. Quite frankly this airport has gone from bad to worse, luckily I can get fly to me destination from Heathrow so goodbye Gatwick.

“easy jet queues”

★☆☆☆☆

written by sarahjhiscocks on 10/05/2015

I really like easyjet, lots of leg room, the right amount of info, good prices, but checking in at Gatwick is a nightmare, the bear minimum no of staff man the 'improved' checking in process leading to long queues and stress knowing how far you have to walked to get to the plane from departures. Given a choice, Gatwick would be avoided.

“Awful”

★☆☆☆☆

written by MalakaiWhite on 24/08/2014

Security and passport control is nearly as bad as JFK airport! At least there the passengers with American passports go through quickly! No such luck for us British passport holders at Gatwick. What a joke this place is.

“Passport control chaos”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Heather122 on 27/06/2014

Just returned from Istanbul into Gatwick...the time to clear Passport Control was three quarters of an hour, basically because the epassport machines were not working and there were not enough staff so that only about half the kiosks were staffed. There were almost no staff to marshal the huge queue so most people had no idea where to go or what the problem was. This is not what you would expect from a supposedly world class airport, certainly Ataturk airport carried out the checks much more efficiently. Also what happened to the toilets in the carparks? Presumably closed to save manpower. I would never fly from Gatwick again unless there was absolutely no alternative.

“Gat Witches”

★★☆☆☆

written by 146Lawrence on 03/04/2014

We came from Schiphol to Londen Gatwick and than we went to Fuerteventura. The security over there is horrible. I bought at Schiphol a present for my friend and because we only had handluggage. I had to trow it away from the security. Because it did'nt fit in the 1 liter bag. the present was sailed as well. Only the bag from Schiphol i did'nt have it anymore. Also little babies wich are 3 or 4 month old and with a single mum had to lay down the ground. Because mum had to be checked. Why don't they make any facilties for babies. Thing you put on the ground, but not little babies. They call them all ready the witches from GatWick. For this reason i will never travel ever to England. The shops are fine and also facilities and also the pasport control is very kind to you

“going through duty free shopping area”

★★★☆☆

written by on 14/12/2013

there should be a direct route through all the duty free for those who do not wish to shop or who wish to avoid the overpowering fumes of perfume. This is especially for people who like me are asthmatic and are adversely effected by this powerful concentration of fumes. Asthmatics will know how bad it can be in a car with a strongly scented air freshener hanging on the rear view mirror. Well, I find that the perfume section in the airport to be just as bad and yet the path through winds around, the long way. There should be an alternative route to the departure lounge sign posted and identified for those who want to avoid it

“What a shambolic airport”

★☆☆☆☆

written by PatD on 15/08/2012

Came through Gatwick after a very relaxing holiday got in 20 mins early so thought great WRONG .I would like to know why it takes them 1hr 15 mins to get the cases onto the carosel ? I know it was busy but they shut 3 carosels down and then 2BA&1Thomsons came in after our flight surprise surprise guese which cases came through first BA&Thomson. I know esayjet are a low cost airline but I pay my money like any one else and I expect to be the same . I have used a lot of airports in the world and the is the worst .I dont know what visitors think as they come in .

“Baby and a broken arm”

★★☆☆☆

written by Blanchard on 06/06/2011

Gatwick has recently opened a depature security desk just for people who require assistants i.e people with pushchairs etc. This is fantastic, they are all trained in how to get you and a pram through with no stress at all. This however changes coming into Gatwick, you are not given your pram until you have passed through passport control which takes on averge 1 hour. This average is based on me travelling thought the airport 5 times a year. I have waited upto 1 hour 45 mins. You are probably thinking, he must be from Iraq or something, you would be wrong I have a british passport however looking at how much quicker the que moves for non EU citizens I wish I was from Iraq. There is no assistance what so ever for people travelling with children. I was travelling on my own with a 14 month old who was screaming with frustration for 45 mins, the immagration officer only called me forward when there was two people left in front of me. Great!!!!!! This is not an occational problem...every single time I travel to Gatwick it's the same.

Guest's Response to Blanchard's Review

Written on: 28/02/2012

hear hear! This was exactly our complaint, twice last year. No one will accept responsibility when my husband complained. My 3 year old was crying for her buggy as she was so tired, i cant understand why they cant just put the buggys out first. its not like we are asking for our luggage to come out first too just a bit of help - its hard work with a young family and not much to ask!

I have used a few airports in my time, but Gatwick has got to be the dirtiest, oldest and unloved place in the whole world. How embarassing for the UK !

“The South Terminal is increasingly grim as BAA works...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by DFman on 27/02/2011

The South Terminal is increasingly grim as BAA works hard to create the most awful passenger experience in the world. The available space for passengers goes down as the money grabbing experience increases. All natural light has now gone adding to the battery hen feeling, as has the viewing area, with space set aside for children a distant memory. Three hours of shopping hell for no obvious reason, other than BAA wanting to take your money. The Egyptian airport at the other end of our flight feels better and more spacious with each trip. They no longer hassle you for money or charge for toilet paper, Gatwick lounges now charge £18 for a couple of hours use. I soon expect to see the CEO of BAA outside the men's toilet charging £1 a sheet next time I am in Gatwick.

written by tweety5 on 23/12/2010

i will never use gatwick airpark again /charlwood avenue/ when i returned to the car park in nov 2010 i found the wing mirror hanging off my jaguar xj6, i went to find the manager who was waiting for my arrival, he was aware of the problem, took photos and wrote out a form on site, it is now the end of dec and i am still waiting! i have sent loads of e mails to them, nobody appears to man the phone lines, even my travel agent had difficulty contacting them, i keep getting fobbed off! the drive home from gatwick was a nightmare with no wing mirror and i am still unable to drive my car, it has been terrible customer service.

“Gatwick airport in itself was very pleasant, plenty of...”

★★★★★

written by Leanne44 on 17/12/2010

Gatwick airport in itself was very pleasant, plenty of places to eat or just get a drink, lots of space and shops. It is a massive airport but was easy to find my way around as this year I went to Tunisia Africa, the overall flight was very nice, massive amounts of space on the comfortable plane, tvs, films, food, etc.
Checking in was a little bit out of control but if you get there really early and checked in fast like I did then it is not so bad, otherwise it will be chaos. The airport including the toilets were very clean but very busy, the people were fairly nice and it was efficient and appropriate for being such a busy airport, I am pleased with it although the airport itself is quite far away.
