Good Points: Quick process if prebooked. Did not need paper part of UK licence. Telephone helpline efficient (In salt Lake City I think).
Bad Points: Any quoted US price will not include any insurance whatsoever. Arranging your own in the USA can double the price.
General comments: I hired a car from Alamo at Dulles Airport, Wasington for two weeks in May 2009. The shuttle bus to and from the depot is quick and the driver worked like a Trojan to move suitcases (some bigger than him) on and off the bus. The car was Hyundai Accent with aircon. Perfectly adequate and I could have had a bigger one if I wanted to. The contract is quite difficult to follow for UK visitors because we are used to a minimum standard of insurance being provided with the car. Not in the USA. You get the metal and nothing else. I booked through Travelsupermarket hich gave insurance and collision damage etc for much cheaper than the cost of those items in the USA. Car was in good condition although a little grubby. Staff were helpful. Cars are lined in a row and you take any one with the keys in it. Damage checks are done by the man at the exit gate who will sign for any knocks and dents. On return it is very similar.

I use Alamo fairly regularly, and have always have a good experience with them. One time, there was a mistake where they charged me for fuel, but after ringing the local office this was sorted out straight away (central call centre pretty useless though). Nearly always cheapest and never had a problem with the cars.

In my experience with Alamo Car hire you need to read your contract properly. Paid for everything in the UK. Gave my credit card in Sanford for petrol approx £40 . Fine return to UK, credit card was charged £312 - extra cost upgrade I agreed to (not) Contacted Alamo who emailed me paperwork and guess what I had signed for an upgrade. I know it was my fault for not reading contract properly but didn't expected to be charged for something I didn't want.

Our two booked SUV's to be collected from Anaheim Alamo had been double booked and we were unable to pick up our vehicle. Told to return 3 hours later but still no vehicles available. We waited in office for 2 1/2 hours with 4 children to be given a family sedan for our travel to San Diego. Staff assured us that the SUV's would be available in San Diego and were on 'hold'. When arriving in San Diego there were no cars available and they were not aware of our situation. After days of muckin ...

I booked with Alamo on line, paid in full, but when I took it back, I was told there was nothing more to pay, BUT a day later, got a bill for $200. Tried contact customer services, didn't reply to emails, just pass you around.I'd like to find out who the chairman of the company is and email him to tell him that his service is poor.I wont use them again.

We booked collection of a Midsize car on arrival at LAX airport for 8 days, to be returned to Las Vegas Airport. On arrival at Alamo's office we were offered the usual upgrades/insurances etc. which we had already arranged with our initial booking. Having politely declined any additional fees we went out to pick our car from the lot.
There were no Midsize cars available so we took one from the full size lineup, checked with the girl at the gate this was OK and away we went in our 16,000-mile Che ...

The worst hire car company I have ever used. They would not allow my partner and I to pay for the car on my credit card as my partner was driving. We asked if there was anything at all we could do and they flatly refused to help us and were very rude. When we called customer services we were told we might not get the first days deposit back but would get the rest. I have just received an email saying we will receive no refund at all. Whilst this may have been hidden in the ts and cs somewhere thi ...

I was asked to pay e800 to cover excess as I do not possess a credit card. When I returned the car in immaculate condition, cleaned, hoovered out and full of petrol I was told I would have to wait a month for my deposit back? Well the month has gone by and after several calls to Alamo and France (where I hired the car) I'm still no further on to getting my money back!
Needless to say I'll take this to court as I'm absolutely furious to be treated so disgracefully.

Alamo really surprised us with very strange business ethics! We made a reservation from Germany and rented a car in Reno. As we planned a camping tour, we needed a 'stow & go' car because we intended to sleep in the back. In order to make sure that we get this special car we phoned Alamo in Reno in advance which car to book and explained that we definitely need this car type and no other. They told us we need a Full Size SUV and promised us that this is no problem. Once being there it turned ou ...

I hired a car with Alamo through the BRITISH AIRWAYS web site. I thought I was hiring a car with Alamo at Joberg Airport South Africa. It was actually the Europcar & National Car hire depot/office NOT Alamo, they just had a sign outside saying also for Alamo. I found a £166 bill on my credit card for additional services that I thought were already included. When I hired it on BA website it was not the basic car hire it was their top notch all singing dancing rental including everything (i ...

The lines are a bit long but the staff are very friendly. Really quick and easy and you get what you pay for.
The Chrysler 300 was gorgeous definitely hiring another next time even I have to pay the extra. The little Dodge thing was rubbish.

I am in the process of taking this further. How do I prove that I did not do any of the things charged when it was never checked in my presence and it was left at the dealership over the weekend? Customer Service department tell me that I was responsible for the vehicle for 6 working hours after hire charge ended. I am yet to find this in print. To say that I am not happy is an understatement. If you really have to hire from Alamo insist on a check before taking the vehicle and at the end o ...

Booked a seven seater through travel agent, arrived at Orlando. First thing they want is your credit card, then they pushed for a up grade, which I agreed the price, swipe your card hay presto they charge you for recovery then they charged me for a full tank of fuel which I paid already with original booking for the 7 seater. When I realised a day after when not tired, went to see them about it and got fobbed off. They will not be used again.

After a very long trip from Gatwick to Florida you don't really need someone in your face pushing you to upgrade your chosen rental (as it happens when it was obvious we weren't going to upgrade he told us to take ANY of the 7 seater cars).
No, we only wanted to pay for the tank of petrol as agreed with Auto Europe - we repeated over and over.
They added charge for "roadside assistance" without even a mention and proferred the agreement for signature with all this info on the other side.
Take yo ...

We rented a Camry hybrid in Oakland and loved it! It had electronic ignition and had no key, so after we became accustomed to it we found it very economical and enjoyable. It had great power and acceleration and we got about 34 mpg! The staff was patient and helpful and I think our experience with Alamo was positive in every way.We found this experience very enjoyable and positive. We'll definitely work with Alamo again if the price is comparable with other companies. No bad points in our expe ...

if you want to hire a car in Oz and you book it from here(UK) make sure you have in writing the exact amount of extra charges that have to be payed when you collect the car. Make sure the insurance covers any damage or loss to the vehicle otherwise you may be in for a nasty surprise when you return it.

Alamo has a clever way to double or triple the bill of unsuspecting customers.
Over the web, I arranged to rent a car from Alamo for 5 days and received a special weekly rate of $149. My return plans changed and I had to return the car on the fourth day. I fully expected to pay the entire $149 as I agreed and wasn't looking for a pro-rated charge - in fact the confirmation email states that early returns on special weekly rates are not entitled to a proportionate refund.
Fine. What I w ...

We're planning to rent a car for 6 weeks, got a car with Alamo Car Hire, the first week was ok. Then the car had broken.
We called Alamo Los Angeles, they never sent any tow truck or new car. We had to wait / talk on the prepaid cellphone for 2 hours. What we were talking about was mainly not the car, but the wrong contract. They messed up our contract, put someone's name on our profile. We told them the car # and key # and everything, but they said the contract name was not us. Well, that thei ...
