Good Points: Refunded alleged damage charges after complaining loudly to Chief Executive's Office.
Bad Points: Condition of car Airport return kiosk unmanned on return Lax pre-rental checks (missed major scratches which luckily I found) Over zealous post-rental checks (allegedly found damaged tyres) No way of contacting branch post-rental Slow damage adminstrative procedures (10 days minimum) Unhelpful call centre staff
General comments: I recently hired a car from Hertz Edinburgh Airport in June 2009 On returning the vehicle at 7.15am the Hertz kiosk was open but unmanned so I had no option but to leave the keys in the key drop. As far as I was concerned no damage had occurred to the car.
£107 was then charged to my credit card for ' damage '. A cryptic invoice followed but did not explain what the damage was for. A call to the call centre was also fruitless, as the call agent did not know what the damage was beyond ' a sliced tyre '. I asked her exactly what a ' sliced tyre ' meant or how it would occur. She did not know and told me it would take 10 days to find out. She asked if I had an accident. I most certainly did not - I only drove 50 milles up the motorway and back over the entire rental There was no way of me contacting Edinburgh Airport rental office either to clarify (unlike some other car rental agents which provide direct lines to the branch.
I could not accept waiting 2 weeks to hear why they charged me, so contacted the Chief Executive's office. To their credit, I got a resolution within 5 days though they did state that a) the renter should wait for Hertz personnel to go through post-rental checks. I would love to have done this, if someone had been available. When I picked up the car, I was explicitly told if the kiosk was unmanned to leave they keys in the key drop. They also said their claims procedures take up to 10 working days and they are powerless to go faster. Too slow for me, sorry, so won't use Hertz again.

Hertz Car Rental Customer Service is declining in proportion to its profits in the current economy. Perhaps this is to be expected, but it is unfortunate. I rent approximately 20 cars per year for business purposes, and I have regularly relied on Hertz. However, due to a number of recent bad experiences, I am starting to look further afield for the rentals. Excellent Hired a Hummer for 2 day excusrion to Grand Canyon from www.allgrandcanyontours.com ' , the car came from Hertz.
The guy was really nice and friendly, explained the do's and don't for us and when we asked when to bring it back, he just said to make sure we had it back in 2 days time.
Excellent Service, would definately reuse.

I probably won't use Hertz again and I wouldn't recommend them. When I arrived in Perugia airport I found that only one of the 2 child seats I requested had been installed. The staff looked at me as if I had made a mistake until I pointed out that I have twins so I was pretty sure I had requested 2. Another thumb down for Hertz!
For the people who were impressed by the Hertz's image but never rented cars from them I would also like to share my experience on how Hertz does business.
Hertz broke their promise again and failed to respond to my message posted on their website in the promised 9 business day period. I am wondering how many of you will do business with Hertz, personally NEVER again!

I would not use Hertz again. Car was not cleaned properly, had to wait over 1.5 hrs for car at pickup point after the car was booked 3 months earlier, I would have expected the car to be ready, considering my flight arrived 30 minutes late. For wasting all my valuable time they kindly gave me a free tank of fuel, only after I complained after waiting one hour.

We hired a car through Hertz in Brescia, Italy. When I received the invoice for the total hire I found that the prepayed amount was not correctly recorded (understated by 21 Euros). Despite complaining twice I dealt with extremely rude customer service staff who explained that the difference was administration costs for the local office!

The car was what I ordered - no more, no less. Administration fees for paying a penalty notice - 30 pounds, plus VAT. Hertz did not supply details of the offence until they had been requested several times. Invoice notices were sent late (leading to a repeat of the offence) and 2 from 3 were not accurate. Company don't seem interested in customer service - would not use Hertz again.

We picked up our car at Hertz Schiphol airport in Amsterdam.
The car was parked extremely close to the other rentals cars in a very dark multi-storey car park.
We checked it as good as we could and drove off.
