“Hertz at Heathrow Airport are total shammers. After...”

written by on 02/02/2024

Hertz at Heathrow Airport are total shammers. After booking and paying for a car several months in advance, we were told upon arrival that the car we booked was not available with a GPS and we would have to spend over $2000 extra Australian dollars to get a car with a GPS. On complaining while on our trip, we were told we ‘could have waited 15 minutes for a car that we ordered to come in with a GPS’. We were not told this at the time of pick up- we were made to feel we had no option to take the bigger car with a GPS. I would never recommend Hertz, Heathrow to anyone and will never use Hertz ever again. Extremely poor customer service and only after your money. Enterprise car hire, who we used on another trip were ten times better than Hertz.

Charged €380 for a stone chip on windscreen took photos can be seen on trip advisor which we’re slightly bigger than the tip of a ball point so small I couldn’t see it without my glasses on what do they expect you to do dodge stones flicked up. any other other company this would be fair ware and tare Hertz Paphos airport you are in it to rip people off especially if you think they have full insurance which we didn’t but the guy on the counter said we did and just make a claim. I had standard insurance with an excess of €600.

After successfully returning the car and having a member of staff inspect the car and check the fuel was full I later checked my credit card statement and had been over charged by £100.

“AVOID AVOID AVOID”

Rented from Hertz & Firefly (same) at Paphos airport Cyprus. Following the handbrake skipping, car rolled back at grazed the bumper, not dented only grazed, a €200 repair maximum. Despite it being the handbrake, and the car was older, they took over £1,000 from our bank account, the car was old!! Never ever choose Hertz or Firefly, 1. They don’t accept the insurance if taken out at 3rd party booking 2. They took £1,000 from our bank account for a €200 repair.

If you had insurance through a third party as you say, providing you give them the necessary paperwork that they require, i.e. Contract showing additional charges, your credit card receipt, a copy of the accident report and a copy of your credit card statement showing the charges, you get your money back. That's what happens with these booking agents. If you didn't buy their extra insurance when booking and you didn't buy extra insurance when you picked up the car, the problem is then yours. You should read the small print, ALWAYS. If you didn't, then it's your own fault. All major car hire companies operate like this.

“DONT GO NEAR !!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by SteveandChris on 28/01/2020

AVOID AT ALL COSTS… This company is part of a group of four. Hertz, Thrifty, Dollar, and Firefly. Their practises are verging upon illegal and at best very shady business. Prepare to take out extortionate extra insurance, pay for breakdown cover !! and if you have your own excess cover you will suddenly discover that you are accused of marking the car you rented and receiving a fictitious claim for payment knowing that your insurance company will pay. Beware also the search groups that recommend these hire companies because the search groups are owned by Hertz too. ON NO ACCOUNT RENT ANYTHING FROM ANY OF THESE COMPANIES !!!

“Hertz Darlington, Nowhere near the cheapest hire”

★☆☆☆☆

written by stevehopper2 on 19/08/2019

Took a weeks hire on a small car as I had shopped around and Hertz came first for price(or so I thought). 6 days hire came in at £97. The assistant asked if I was interested in taking "Super Cover" as I was being hired a new car and Super Cover would negate any costs for scratches. "Whats it gonna cost me" says I. "You'll pay a total of £149" said the sales assistant. Now I weighed up the option and thought yep, I will go for that, it will save a fortune if anything goes wrong. I walked out with my white slip (didn't need to check it as the sales assistant had been so helpful,) and drove away in the new car. At end of hire I took the car back and found out that the £97 hire had not turned into a £149 hire, (plus the dreaded VAT of course), it had in fact turned into a final total of £295 inc VAT. Obviously the "Super Cover" is pushed onto the unsuspecting renter because the sales assistant gets a nice little kick back from the insurance company as do Hertz. For me, it's not just the money, it is the betrayal I felt from a company I had rented from a few times before. If this is how they treat their regular customers on a normal no damage hire, then just imagine how they act should you be unfortunate enough to have an accident. My advice, Go Elsewhere to hire a vehicle, Hertz may appear to be the cheapest but believe me, when you add on all the extra's and you endure the lack of appreciation from them, you will be better to steer clear.

“Disappointed with Hertz ”

★★★★☆

written by rdoane on 18/08/2019

I was totally dissatisfied with my Hertz car rental at the Las Vegas McCarren Airport. Approximately a month in advance, my wife and I rented over the internet an "intermediate-sized" car from the McCarren Airport Hertz Car Rental kiosk. The images on the home page showed Malibu's as examples of "intermediate" size vehicles. We called to verify our rental availability the day before our flight from PA to Vegas, emphasizing the need for an "intermediate-size" car because we had two adults and two children plus their luggage for a week's stay in Vegas to put in the car. We were arriving at 12:30 am Vegas time. When we arrived we were given a Kia Soul, a car the Kia web-page calls a "sub-compact," which it definitely is! We had to have our children, 14 and 17, sit on and hold luggage because there was so little room behind the back seat. When pointed out to Hertz that even Kia called the Soul a "sub-compact," the counter person, then the manager, indicated that in Vegas it was an "intermediate." We will never again use Hertz Car Rental and suggest that anyone considering doing so, reconsider. We also rented a car from Alamo Car Rental and received a Ford Edge, a true intermediate-size vehicle, and were completely satisfied with their service. Lesson learned, go Alamo (or anywhere other than Hertz) to rent a vehicle. I cannot vouch for any car rental company other than Alamo, BUT anywhere else has to be at least equal to Hertz if not better!

“Hertz Bournemouth Airport SUCKS - the personnel too”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Soto431 on 26/06/2019

Hertz Bournemouth Airport - DO NOT RENT CARS IN HERTZ 1- I rented a car, they gave me a VAN, with no rare window, they didn't have another car. 2-I drop off the car when the agency was closed, Initially they wanted to charge me 307£ for damages, and now they are asking to pay for 358£ for damages. 3-The car wasn't clean. 4-They offer to give you the car on the train station but by mistery they call you the same day to tell you that you need to pick up the car in the airport (15 min -17 £ away from the train station) 5-They say on the site that when you drop off the car in the Bournemouth Airport Branch, they're in charge of your commute to the train station, when I arrives to the Bournemouth airport, they told me that the service was no longer available, so (15 min-17£ to the train station) 6-When they first sent me the email with the invoice of 308£ for damages, they didn't tell that the invoice may vary after, and 2 weeks later they sent me an email saying that the NEW final invoice was 358£, 50£ more.. Worst service ever, and also the personnel that was in the Hertz Bournemouth Airport, oh my god, please for the next time you need to hire a proper person with a little of quality in customer service. Worst experience ever.

“charged for items after we give the keys back....”

★☆☆☆☆

written by icewarthog on 03/06/2019

the car was extremely underpowered and rubbish left in from previous rental... we filled the car up to the brim at the last filling station outside the airport. it was then a very slow 5 min drive to the car drop off point. they charged me an additional 9 euros for fuel and a filling charge... its very convenient that the key had to be left in a drop box..

Picked up a car after a delayed flight from Christchurch to Auckland. It was already gone midnight. I'd requested a child seat for my 6 year old. They provided a baby / toddler seat. They had no other seats available and said there was no possibility of sorting it that night. Guy on the desk showed little interest and a complete lack of initiative. I had to ask the neighbouring car hire companies if they had a seat - they didn't. Only suggestion was to get a taxi to hotel and come back at 8 AM to sort. It was already 1 AM by now and the cost of taxis in and out of Auckland Centre would have been a lot. I drove the car without a child-seat after being told (incorrectly)by a member of the public that 110 cm was the legal height for a child to not need a seat. Turns out Hertz have a central Auckland office the guy on the desk failed to tell me. When we phoned customer services we got passed from pillar to post. Eventually someone said they would sort and get back to us. When after 2 hours someone got back their first question was "what's the problem?". They eventually did sort it at the central Auckland office but not after wasting a lot of our time. I will never use them again - a truly awful experience and the only black mark on an otherwise wonderful trip. If by ticking the box for a childseat this means up to the age of 4 why can't they clarify that. I don't consider 6 years old to be an adult. Why can't they keep a few seats at the airport office just in case. Rating - 1 star because 0 stars wasn't an option.

On 9/8 I rented a car from the buffalo airport from Hertz car renal . Drove it 75 miles to Jamestown to attend a wedding. The next day I planned to drive to Toronto for another wedding. The car would not start after contacting an agent and realizing the time they come to jump the car or take me back to buffalo airport was not ideal for I had to be in Toronto , the agent advise me to leave the car to get towed and I was able get a ride to niagra falls to pick up a car at that location , I get to niagra falls which is about 1 1/2 away to find the location closed . I call hertz back up and the agent response was oh I guess the other agent failed to look up the hours of operation , the agency advise me to go to the buffalo airport to get a car , now I bring really cautious and asked the agent before I drive 45 min to please check if they have a car , well yes you guess it they gave no cars. So now I’m stuck by myself at the Canadian border waiting for my niece who I have unconvinced to pick me up which is a 2 1/2 hour drive , she also had to take off Wednesday from Roth to drive me 2 1/2 hours back to the buffalo airport because I fishy have a car . On top of all this I have spend about 10 hours on the phone with Hertz since Sunday to Wednesday getting transfer around from person to person trying to get my money back from a car that broke town and I didn’t used , finally after getting a hold of somebody I’m told it can take up to 6 weeks before I get my money back , how can a company treat a customer like this and ruin their vacation, I gad to unconvinced a lot of people to help me out with transportation

“Went from $668 estimate to over $1,200 -- terrible.”

written by on 13/04/2018

Hertz FLL Cannot recommend. I haven't rented from Hertz in years and now remember why. I requested a Chev Impala only to find when I got there they had upgraded the car since my reservation which put it into a 'premium' price and wanted an additional $35 a day for a month long rental. I was upset by this upcharge, but after a long day flying here I took the Nissan Altima instead at the agreed rate. It was ok but I feel they broke my contract. Transfer to car rentals: Getting to the car rental area of the Fort Lauderdale airport requires you to get into a huge lineup of people, bags and all, to get onto a bus to take you there...a waste of almost 45 minutes. When you enter the building, Avis is closest, but Hertz was way at the end of the building. Figure on a lot of walking. Slow Service: There were only 3 people ahead of us but only one attendant working...it took almost an hour to get to her. I pay by Amex Platinum and there's no need to take car rental insurance, but she disagreed and I had to sign more pages. Finally, she said I apparently had 'gold' status and should have gone to the stand next to her. Additional Drivers: My daughter was with me for the first 10 of the 30 day rental...for an additional $11 a day...but they insisted I had to pay it for the whole month. I argued and her manager said ok. When I checked the papers later it was for the whole 30 day rental. Car Return: To return the car it's all in reverse...you have to take the car back and have them check it over, then personally lug all your bags to the crowded bus and go to your terminal from there. As a result I asked another Hertz location if I could return the car to them and take a $10 taxi ride direct to Fort Lauderdale departures and they said they changed the drop off location while on the phone. What they didn't say was that there was another high fee to not take the car back to where you originally got it...my bill went from a $668 estimate to over $1,200. Called and they just said 'read the contract you signed'. Never again Hertz.

“Wished, it is a good company, but experienced fake charges”

written by 176Hamilton on 09/04/2018

Charged on my credit card around 400 euro 1 week after I put the car back and dropped the keys. They showed me the damage, which I remembered, that it was already theirs. If you see a rear light hanging, fixed with tape, what do you think? Before knowing hertz: "The car provider fixed the damage temporarly." After you know Hertz: "This is the reason why you are paying quite less for the car and you are going to pay 10 times more, sad but true. Even if I would check everything and show the workers the unprotocolled damages, they would still find something... read reviews of others. PFUIII!!! Poor hertz workers...

“Worst Travel Experience Ever”

★☆☆☆☆

written by 215Hanna on 30/03/2018

For your own wellbeing and safety do not hire a car from this company. We hired a car whilst staying in a hill top house over looking Lake Como in Italy. It had worn brakes which did not work. We rang them up and were told to bring it in. and they would change it. We drove 100 miles down steep mountain roads and motorways to change it, risking our own safety (they did not want to bring a car to us). In total this cost us two days of our holiday. It was Grand Prix weekend, so when we got there we told there was there was no car available. After insisting they provide a vehicle they provide one (Fiat Panda) which had not been cleaned. The bodywork was OK so we signed for it. We enjoyed the remaining days of our holiday and took it to back to the airport. The Hertz person came out to check it looked at the paperwork and headed straight to the door lock which was not clearly visible and said it had been drilled and we must pay damages. (We had not parked anywhere, where a professional car criminal using an electric drill could have damaged the lock, professional criminal breaking into a Panda, I ask you!) We surmised that car had been in Hertz’s workshop being repaired, and was taken out quickly to provide us with a replacement car. We explained the situation to the Hertz people and were assured/agreed that not to charge us, so we got on the plane home. A few months later a demand notice appeared, despite many letters we are still receiving demands for payments which has now increased to £400. There is no phone or help line where we can speak to someone about the situation and the letters we have written have been ignored. Do not be seduced by cheaper fees, we are learning the hard way you only get what you pay for. We could not in all honesty recommend using Hertz are any its associated companies.

“Bad customer attitude”

written by alaincohen on 12/03/2018

Rented a car online. As I got to the airport, I was told that the car I wanted was not the best for the climate conditions, they tried to scare me and upsale me with a 4X4 Bmw. That way I would be safe. NO NO. Than I had to find the car in the Parking. The car was parked in the wrong location. No Help. Run back to the office, wait in the cold. Never again with Hertz Montreal Airport. Whta the counter sales person thinks. You are a tourist therefore you are stupid? Yo never drove in the snow?

I hired a car for 4 days from hertz for £120. i paid for extra insurance for another £100 as abroad we were 2 hours late and nearly missed the plane due to a big traffic jam so ni time to fill the tank, which was half full when returned. guess how much they charged for 1/2 tank of fuel? £185 euroes !!! guess how much the total bill was up from £220 when i drove away thinking that was everything? £644 !!! they provided a list of trumped up charges like £105. 36 for an airport surcharge for nothing at all, as well as various other charges to get to that figure. there was of course no damage, this is just trumped up charges we are talking about. spoke to the customer services team at hertz and they said basically all the trumped up charges are in the small print and not interested in any help or goodwill. be warned, do not use hertz!

Rented from Hertz through Travelocity at the San Diego airport the week after Christmas. They charged $98.10 per day for a mid sized car. I found out later the going rate for the same car from other rental places is $19.00 to $22.00. Save yourself a lot of money and rent somewhere else. They get one star only because I cannot rate them lower.

“Worst car rental experience ever”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Roninw1960 on 04/11/2017

Prior to booking the car hire we had opted for Hertz as thought that they were a major reputable car hire company. On arrival at Chania airport we were told that the car class we had booked was not available for three hours as a previous customer had not returned the car on time. We were given two options which were to pay an additional 45 euros or wait for 3 hours. When we asked that the charge was waived as this was entirely the fault of Hertz we were informed that this was not company policy. We opted under duress to pay the additional charge as we had been up since 2.30 a.m. When we complained via the car broker (Holiday auto's who we WOULD recommend) the reply from Hertz was totally fabricated in that they said we had happily changed and we had wanted a higher car spec. We can only think that our experience was either company policy which is dreadful or that the individual was trying to increase their sales. Either way we would never hire a car from Hertz again or recommend them.
