“The Best Car rental agent, from Norfolk, VA”

★★★★★

written by KasonBolton414 on 05/06/2019

Good Day All, I am sharing this review due to the many complaints we have with companies. Actually, how many of us write good reviews/bad reviews. This you man didn't know me from Adam. The service I received from him almost had me in tears. It reminded me of the way Customer Service use to be. I had a bad flight luggage was lost. My original car rental reservation was with Avis. However, they said they were out of cars!!! Flight was delayed 4 hours in Denver. I was trying to make it to a family wedding. Made reservations with Dollar rental through Price line in Airport Lobby. This agent listened to me complain, whimper and whine about what had just happened to me. He didn't say a word he just listened. He said Ma'am we're here to make your rental car experience a pleasant experience. You don't need to come to Virginia, with an unpleasant experience. I'll do everything possible to make this quick and painless. I'll give you area's where you can purchase new clothes until you receive your luggage. I'll give you directions to restaurants If you're needing a meal/cocktails.When I tell you this man went all out of his way. He did if I could give 20 stars I would. This was the best rental car experience ever. I am a Dollar rental car customer for life. I've also encouraged my employees and family members to use Dollar when traveling. Thanks so much to this man, from Norfolk, VA Dollar rental car Airport! Thank you!

“JFK Car Hire”

★★☆☆☆

written by TinCan71 on 22/04/2019

Bad Staff at desk gave impression couldn't care less Booked car on basis could carry 3 cases - we were offered much smaller car inadequate of loading our 2 small cases Staff seemed to be aware of this issue and tried to upsell to larger car - lost interest when asked to speak to manager / get vehicle l'd booked l suspect staff were deliberate in their denial of knowledge of website that allows people to pay their ez-pass fees online - specifically designed for rental cars... Do your research... Good Staff in rental lot sorted more suitable car with good humour Car whilst clearly a rental (few knocks) was clean and worked well Stat nav we hired worked well We believe we paid a fair price for the car - Dollar were not the cheapest We believe we should have been given better service

“Extra charges”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 15/11/2017

Have used Dollar for many years and always been satisfied. This year hiring a car from Orlando which should have cost approx $975 they want to charge me an extra $1800 for liability and cdw ins when this has always been included. There was nothing anywhere on my booking confirmation that stated this would be exyra as wete some other charges. After 2 hrs I rented the car for just 3 days (rather than 30 days) one way. Once I got to my hotel went on line and rebooked 27 days at a TOTAL INCL PRICE of $812!!! Having complained to Hertz, who apparently own Dollar, I am told that one location can be different to another! Does that answer my complaint I THINK NOT. I WILL NOT be using them again as the stress involved after a 10 hr flght is just not worth it. SHAME ON YOU DOLLAR/HERTZ.

“Never Trust their employees”

★☆☆☆☆

written by mfurmanmfurman on 05/09/2017

Although I have no complaint about Dollar vehicle my dealing with their employees has convinced me that their policy is to fraudulently sign you up for additional services you do not need or want and then provide no recourse of fixing the problem, while lying and prevaricating in the process. I have made a third party reservation via for their vehicle for 8 days to take my family on vacation from Las Vegas to San Francisco via Death Valley and Yosemite National park. My estimated rate was about $200 and I expected to pay about $300 with an addition of all the taxes and service charges. I ended up paying $670 and this is how it had happened. While being processed in Las Vegas by a very polite employee I was asked what seemed to be an innocent question: “Do you want a basic or comprehensive insurance?” Since no other option was presented to me and assuming that “basic” means just liability insurance I have verbally selected the “basic” one. Then I was asked to sign an empty electronic form and was handed over a package which I, being a trusting individual, didn’t even review at the spot. Several hours later I have opened the package and was astonished to realize that I apparently agreed to pay for $26.88 per day of Loss damage waiver which I didn’t want and $8.99 per day of Premium Road Service which I didn’t need since I have this service from other providers. Since it was already too late I have called them the next morning. They told me that I was to go to one of their corporate offices to resolve the dispute. When I had complained that I had different vacation plans they told me that I would be able to resolve my dispute when returning a car in San Francisco. However my attempt to do so in both San Francisco car return facility and by calling their customer service later on were rebuffed with the statements that since I have signed the contract I have no recourse. They refused to provide me with any compensation and practically didn’t care of what I thought about their obviously fraudulent conduct. Bottom line is never to trust any “Dollar rent a car” employee. I do not know what their official claim is but they are not there to help you. Rather their goal is to rely on your trust to defraud you from as much money as possible. I will never deal with them again and will not recommend anybody to do so.

“Be careful of hard sell on tolls”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 01/08/2017

After a long flight, we went to the desk to pick up the car. Friendly seemingly helpful staff. They strongly pushed a car upgrade which we resisted, then they moved onto push the road toll option in San Francisco at €11.99 per day for 9 days. We were poorly prepared, so didn't know how the toll system worked, and took the option. When we investigated it later, we realised what appalling value this was, so rang the customer service number to cancel it. They told us they could add options over the phone, but we'd have to go to an office to remove one!! Great customer service. So we went to the downtown office, in a "very expensive to park" area, started queuing to see someone, but despite having 4 staff on duty, only 2 people were actually serving and we realised we were going to be there a long time and gave up. On returning the car, we complained to the man at the collection desk and he told us he could refund the option there, but we'd then obviously have to go online and pay and deal with any late charges. By now we'd done just 2 bridges tolls (real cost about €15) but we'd missed the 2 day payment window. Again, we gave up, as we thought it was likely now we'd just put in hours of unravelling for little reward. But why didn't the customer service phone person tell us this cancellation option when we rang in the week? We are left assuming the strategy is that a key profit point for car hire is add ins like this, so sign them up and make it difficult in a foreign country to fix it. Sad bad taste on a good trip. Take care.

“Failed Internet Agreement”

★☆☆☆☆

written by daviddgbs on 10/07/2017

Arriving at Dollar car hire desk (Atlanta International Airport) with a pre-paid 3 week deal for a Ford Focus (£366.39) the deal was refused because the card used for the booking was left behind. The cost of rebooking at the desk was $2081.33 Thinking that I would sort it out when I got back I accepted the deal, bad mistake. I did't like the feeling that the guy at the desk knew I had few choices and that his attitude included an unwillingness to accept the original deal, which could easily have been amended (according to a dollar supervisor).

“Beware Dollar rental cars at Jacksonville Airport florida”

★☆☆☆☆

written by cqCarpenter429 on 25/05/2017

On arrival at Dollar desk were told that the name on the credit card did not match the driver license which had the full name. Credit card had initial only. Unable to pickup car at Dollar! Budget rental cars at the next desk allowed us to rent a car from them using the credit card that dollar would not accept.

“Dollar Rent A Car at Atlanta”

Many of the employees were rude and unhelpful. I was also charged for insurance I did not request. I travel to Atlanta for business once a year, but I will never rent from Dollar again.

“Steer clear of Dollar in Cyprus”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Madalyns101 on 05/04/2017

also had a very nasty experience with Dollar/Thrifty in Limassol. Accused of causing damage to a very tatty rental car - heavily dinged, banged, missing trim, broken wing mirror 15 year old tatty Ford Fiesta. Had picture evidence on my phone but they would not listen. The lady in the office was really aggressive and at one point snatched a form of me and came very close to assaulting me. If I did not pay 100 euros they would not give me my 300 euros back. Complained to Dollar/Thrifty on return to the UK but they said it was the local agent I needed to contact they have ignored emails/phone calls. Please think very carefully before using this car rental firm

“Toll Road Sham Be Very Very careful!!!!!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Johnsonuu187 on 01/12/2016

Be very careful when dealing with the Dollar reps at the key pick up desk. After a long flight you're not at your best, maybe a little off guard. You then are faced with a tsunami of offers and add-ons to your rental agreement, the sales pitch you undergo is quite pressured and in your face! Not a good start to your Floridian holiday. After turning down everything thrown at us; we eventually were presented with our documents so we could pick up the car. This is when the killer blow was delivered by the Dollar rep he said "hope you don't incur any big fines as we hadn't taken the TOLL ROAD OPTION" I obviously asked why, he then went on to say "all toll roads do not have a cash option only automated, hire cars attract big fines for not paying at toll roads" food for thought. We picked up the car and made inquiries at the exit barrier about the toll option and what was involved. we were informed that "any tolls clocked up would be attached to the vehicle and you simply pay for them when we return the car" sounds good I thought so we added that option. BIG MISTAKE, on our return we had an additional $127 (roughly £100) added to our final invoice, I challenged the $127 but I wasn't getting anywhere with the rep. I was told my best course of action would be to contact Dollar when we returned home and it would be sorted then, which I did, never experienced such poor customer care before, complete waste of time. For the record we never came across automated only toll roads, always a cash option available, during our 1000 plus mile trip, I estimate we would of clocked up around $30 of tolls as we used our GPS to avoid using them most of the time, we ended up paying $127!!! PLEASE BE VERY CAREFUL OF THE DOLLAR STAFF, THE HARD SELL & THE ADD-ONS.

“DOLLAR - NOT WORTH A DIME!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by AndreWhite43 on 06/10/2016

While in Florida this summer, we flew up to Memphis and arranged to rent a car from Memphis airport for four days. As we had very little luggage (four adults plus one child) we chose to rent a mid-sized car (arranged via Cartrawler whom we had used to rent a car in Florida) - which supposedly would accommodate us all easily for the short stay. First of all there was quite a long queue at the service desk (and a wait of at least 30 minutes) before we were allocate a car though the agents on the desk were friendly enough. Unlike Alamo though (which by the way is an excellent company to deal with) we weren't allowed to pick our car once we went down to the garage area, but we were given a very small Mitsubishi which was not only too small but only had two seatbelts in the rear. We protested that this was not the kind of car we had expected and instead on a change. The staff were VERY reluctant to do so (they were extremely unfriendly and offhand) but finally offered us a Toyota Yaris - which once again was unsuitable but better than the first one on offer. It was very cramped but instead of doing what Alamo would have done (i.e. given us something far more suitable) they repeatedly tried to get us to upgrade. On principle, we didn't. Result: I would NEVER use Dollar again - however seemingly reasonable the rate seemed to be. Hold out for a decent company that offers valuator money but more, values good customer care.

“Appalling”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Karsyna166 on 02/10/2016

I arrived at JFK airport with my license, it was perfectly valid. I was told that it was cancelled by my government last year. Total nonsense as I had used it in Europe the previous month. The rental was prepaid so they took my money. I walked across the street to Avis and they duly accepted my license and gave me great service and a car. Appalling treatment by the staff at Dollar JFK.

“Avoid-dishonest staff”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Donna_777 on 25/09/2016

Don't use!!! We have recently returned from a 3 week holiday in Florida and we rented a car from dollar for the duration for the first and last time!!! I had booked the car hire from UK before travelling and had included all the insurance we needed. My partner went to the desk at MCO airport when we arrived as I was dealing with the children and he was the one to be driving. He was basically lied to!! He was told we had taken out no insurance on the car and basically told if we wanted to be able to drive the rental car we would have to add insurance on. Very tired after a long journey with children and wanting to get to our villa what else could he do other than take his word that we had obviously made a mistake and didn't have the insurance so accepted to add it on. With nearly £400 charged to our card when we returned home we looked into all this further and it turns out we originally had the most comprehensive insurance we could have. And the extra £400 that they charged us was for extra's that we most definitely wouldn't have needed NOT just normal insurance which is what they led us to believe we didn't have and that's what they told us we were taking out! Contacted Dollar on return to make them aware of the type of staff they are employing and to ask for a refund given the circumstances, only happy to refund half of it which I think is disgusting considering the staff member had lied to us!!! That just proves that they are happy for their staff to take advantage and sham innocent customers, Never use!!!! We have used Alamo in the past and never had anything like this.

“Beware of the Recommended 'Extras' Sold by Counter Staff”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 30/08/2016

I would like to report what I consider is the deliberate mis-selling of the ‘toll payment service’ by local counter staff at Orlando International Airport. As a returning Dollar customer who has historically been happy with their service I am now left totally dissatisfied and mistrusting of the staff and motives of Dollar. During the car pickup process I was asked my itinerary and I was very specific in the details stating that I would be spending a significant amount of time on the Gulf coast (away from any tolls) and yet despite this the counter staff recommended the toll payment service. The representative at the time implied it was simply a cashless payment system and at NO TIME was a daily charge ever mentioned. If they had I obviously would not have selected it as I knew I would not need tolls for at least 1/2 of the rental period. The fact that no mention of a daily charge was acknowledged by the same counter staff when I was presented the bill on return of the car and I was simply told “it’s in the small print” “you should have checked”. I regretably now accept this is true, but I simply didn't know I had to check as I had been given an alternative explanation on how the service worked, had no cause to check and I had previously been trusting of Dollar to offer appropriate recommendations in the past - naively I now know. As a result I was presented with a bill for over $136 when in fact we probably used less than 10 small local tolls! I feel very disappointed and believe that I have been deliberately ripped off by what I consider are opportunistic and dodgy practices by staff that did not offer trustworthy recommendations or explanations. Dollar did offer a small refund at the time of complaining but this does not address the majority of the cost or the distrust I have of their motivations in selling these extra services. The spider and the fly immediately spring to mind... Future Dollar customers beware and do not be fooled by the supposedly customer friendly recommendations made by counter staff - I've learnt the costly way...

“Hidden Extra Charges ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Almeidavz258 on 03/07/2016

After 2 flights and numerous hours travelling time, I arrived at the Dollar desk with a member of my family. tired and weary!! I was asked if I wanted any extra Insurance to which I said NO. I was given a 7 page folded receipt inside a 4 page cover and I made my way to the car. I put the receipt inside the glove box thinking that was a good place to keep it in case we had any problems with the car. I have to say that the car was very good, we were very impressed with it plus we had no problems with it during our holiday. On returning the car, I was given a receipt for $131.05. I was shocked as I had distinctly said NO to extras, on checking the original paperwork I could see that I had been put down for Premium Roadside service. I realised I didn't have a leg to stand on as I had signed on page 7 of 7. I felt that this was very underhand on the part of the person at the Dollar desk who dealt with me. I would suggest to get round this would be for the Customers to sign the page where the Charges are listed, then it would be really clear for all parties concerned, there would be no confusion. It has certainly been an expensive lesson learnt and although I won't be using Dollar again, I will check thoroughly any other companies I use. Shame as the car was fabulous!!

“Avoid like the plague!!!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by jessstorey on 15/02/2016

I have taken to posting this publicly as so far I have had very little interest from emailing privately. I am not satisfied that this will not happen again to other people! I recently rented a car for a 3 week period from Durban King Shaka Airport. When picking up the car it was made totally clear that I planned to drive into Lesotho (a letter was paid for) and having hired a 4x4 expected adequate equipment to be included to cover the basics. Travelling with my sister (16) through Lesotho we ended up with a flat. An inconvenience but no problem I thought, these things happen and I thankfully know how to change a tyre! That is assuming that the right tools have been provided to enable me to do so. I removed the flat tyre and went to lower the spare wheel down to discovered that the rod I needed had at some point clearly had the end snapped off and then shoddily welded back on meaning that it no longer fitted into the gap to turn it and lower the wheel. There was also no end handle or anything to attach meaning you couldn't easily turn it - had it even fitted. The Jack was also pretty inadequate given the size of the car - cheap, small and flimsy!! We were totally stranded at the side of the road in the middle of Lesotho two women alone with absolutely no way to fix the problem. Dollars policy states that any problems or recovery is not covered by the company if out of South Africa so calling for help wasn't an option despite being stranded due to them. Thankfully having cooked in the sun for a couple of hours, an incredibly kind group of locals came to our rescue. We then left Lesotho and took the tyre to be fixed at our own expense along with the welded rod, getting this ground down to actually fit which it now does to save the next poor customer. It is totally unacceptable to send out any hire car without adequate equipment to do the basics of changing a flat tyre. Thankfully we were ok but I hate to even consider what could have happened to us with a car full of gear and clearly not from Lesotho. I reported all of this when I returned the car and although the man was horrified he offered no apology and proceeded to make me sign a form agreeing that I would pay for the damage having already had the tyre and tools fixed. On top of this the Sat Nav that we hired was useless as the touch screen did not work!! I would absolutely warn people to avoid your company and hire cars like the plague if they value their own personal safety. The cars are high mileage, old and poorly maintained putting customers at risk, who knows what else was wrong with the car. AVOID AVOID AVOID!!!!! Worst car hire company I have ever had the misfortune to hire from.

“Overcharging for rental”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Brivel on 18/01/2016

On November 1st 2015 I collected a pre-paid car rental from Dollar at Orlando International Airport. The car was to be rented for 28 days. It was an Economy vehicle and a Chevrolet Spark. Much too small for our luggage but we put up with it. After 10 days the air conditioning failed so I returned it to the Dollar airport outlet for a replacement. While there I asked to upgrade to a Compact level car. Nowhere could I find on the Dollar website any information on daily charges for the various car rental levels. They gave me a Sonic car and I paid via my card. But on return to the UK I found that Dolllar had taken £224.66 from my card !!? Twice I have emailed them about the excessive charge but as seems usual with Dollar no one answers email complaints. When I examined the car rental documents for the Sonic I noticed that the upgrade charge is actually $7 per day. As I had 18 days of my original pre-paid rental to go the charge should have been $126 plus around $14 tax. But they had charged $221.90 ( $224 including tax ) which I now know is $7 X 28 days ! So they not only overcharged for the 18 days but they ALSO charged me £224 in £ instead of $224 in dollars. NOT the £126 which was the correct amount by the $1.50288 dollar to pound ate applicable on the day of vehicle change for 18 days upgrade !? Buyers beware !

“Express is best”

★★★★★

written by DaveCaravan on 28/11/2015

Having registered for 'Express' membership we bypassed the long queue at Dollar desk in Orlando airport. Looked at least a 45 minute wait for those in line, probably having to argue against the usual hard sell on extra insurance too. Had booked Chevrolet Impala (or similar) for period 10th to 26th November 2015. Walked directly to Dollar kiosk at garage just across the road. No formalities, just showed credit card and driving licence which were aleady on record, received rental agreement and shown to car nearby which was a brand new (15 miles on clock) Kia Optima. Away in five minutes. Did 680 miles in 16 days and was charged $375.78. (£248.86). Best deal I've had with Dollar, have used them before and had bit of a hassle getting an unjustified refuel charge refunded. First class service this time, highly recommended.
