I wish I had read these reviews for Avis before booking with them.... bad mistake! I booked a hire car from Almeria airport in Spain with Avis, 6 days car hire ended up costing me over £450. Firstly, it took us an hour to get the Avis desk when arriving at Almeria to sort out the car due to the fact the office isn't in the airport, the 'shuttle' service they run was unbelievably slow, and the people behind the desk take about 30 mins per customer to sort the car out. Do NOT for a moment think that using a big company like Avis means that they can be trusted - they can't. Having booked and paid online for car hire and 'comprehensive insurance', the extra charges applied at the airport actually came to MORE than what we had already paid up front! In other words, the total final cost was more than double what we expected. Hi, Recently booked through Avis in the UK for a prepaid car rental in the US. Had to wait about 1 hour and 45 mins in baking heat at LAX to collect the car and then they added on multiple non package items without me realising (they never mentioned any of it at the desk). This came to over $200 for the rental. When I complained they said I'd signed the agreement so tough luck. “DO NOT HIRE FROM THIS COMPANY!!!”

I booked a car from Avis Budget for 2 days and picked it up from their Victoria store near Buckingham Palace Rd. Being aware we were in a congestion zone we inquired about this fee when collecting the car. We were told we had paid for everything and there would be no extra charges. “8 weeks and still no deposit returned!!!!”

I was given a hire car through my insurance company after a non-fault (my side) accident. I was required to pay a deposit when the car was delivered which I did. When I returned the car on the 30th May I was told my deposit would be returned within 7 to 10 working days. That was 8 weeks ago. I have been given the excuse that they are just too busy and now that my insurance company is no longer dealing with them so this may be a reason. “Poor service in Dubai - avoid Avis”

I hired a car from the Avis office in Dubai airport last month. The experience was poor; I suggest others avoid Avis. My booking was made on line. When I arrived in Dubai I was given a car that had over 30000km on the clock and numerous marks on the white paintwork. None of these had been picked up on Avis's per-handover check. “Avis rental schemes”

I rented a car for a month at the Avis rental car in Toledo, Ohio on Bancroft for a month. When I returned the car I was unaware that Avis no longer details cars. They were attempting to charge me $250 for water stains in the seat, animal hair on the seats and on the side of the seats. Chosen vehicle not available at Malaga airport. Eventually offered chosen vehicle. On checking condition noted damage not recorded on rental agreement. Returned to rental desk and agent marked damage on agreement in pen and signed. On return no one checked in vehicle but I brought the written damage agreement to the attention of the return agent. On hiring car at Dublin airport we see first quoted 150 Euro per day, too expensive I say, its now down to 55 Euro including all insurance. Until you read contract then it shows additional 12 Euro per day insurance. On picking car up we are then advised they made mistake and we owe another 15 Euro per day for GPS - I held my ground and refused to pay. We hired a car at Verona. Car was hired via BA website. To have insurance we ended up paying more than double the advertised price. It cost 27euros/day to have comprehensive cover. They required a receipt for filling the car before return or a charge of 70 euros would be incurred. I would t touch this company again. I just came back from 10 days vacation. I have Avis Preferred card, I booked convertible over month in advance. When I landed at 3 AM I was informed, "sorry but we don't have convertible for you" I get 7 years old diesel suv. Guy from Avis told me in max 2 days someone will contact me to replace me a car for a correct one. I was patient for 24 hours, 48 hours, 72 hours .... Nobody called me. “Very disappointing experience (London st. Pancras) + Tip”

For business & leisure I frequently use rental cars from other companies and am generally satisfied, but my experience at Avis London st. Pancras was very disappointing. I cancelled a reservation by phone and the lady assured me that I was well on time and the costs of the car rental would be refunded to my credit card and no further action was required from my side. The same experience happened to me and I vowed never to use AVIS again. Very deceptive customer service, inconsistency between there terms and conditions and there customer advisors and above all extremely unpleasant customer experience.

Thank you for your reaction, I agree with your statement to avoid Avis. The experience turned out really unexpectedly. After the credit card company performed the refund, Avis performed a refund as well of a larger sum than we paid in the first place.

This way we received about 200 Euro after receiving the refund. As I prefer to conduct honest business both ways, I am trying to send the money back to Avis, however Avis does not respond on repeated E-mails on how to send back their money and I decided to stop taking the initiative.

All in all this is by far the most non-professional experience with an auto rental company I had and I will advise my company (oil/gas) to avoid them in future.

I take a car for a week for 94pound, i extend it for couple of weeks at the same price, everytime i rang them i confirm with them is it unlimited millage, they say YES it is, when i took the car back they charged me .15p per mile, which i was charged more than the vehicle hire, i was shocked as they had taken the money out before i could even say anything,totaly false advertisement and wrong information, do not hire from them £512 just for miliage. Arriving at the airport in Malaga, and after hunting for the Avis desk, I expected the car to be provided with a reasonable level of insurance cover. I was extremely disappointed and, to be honest, somewhat angered to be told by the agent that the level of cover was in fact unacceptably low leaving me with an enormous potential excess, far above that which would be reasonable for a UK insurance.
