When you rent a car, shouldn't the agent take you to the car to show you first which one it is and secondly show you how to start it? Well I was told by Karine at Avis in Bastia that it wasn't part of her duty and as it was dark it was easy for me to find it by pressing the key????? In an airport car park where at least 200 cars are parked right in front of you????? After finding the car by myself I couldn't leave as I dint know how to remove the hand break!!!!!!! I went to Germany from the 5th to the 9th of June form my mums 77th Birthday and booked a hire car with AVIS - big mistake!! On collection of the vehicle they pre-authorised an amount for the estimated amount the car hire would cost, which is standard procedure. I opted for the excess waiver insurance on collection. My partner and I went to Corfu very recently and encountered a spot of bother travelling down a country road. Initially there was a chip in the bumper and were reassured that the excess would only be 25 euros. Upon returning home to the UK we find £400 taken out of our account. Just arrived back from Alanya Turkey, car was disgusting and smelt strongly of cigarette smoke, dented all way down one side & I was told I would get new car this was an old banger. No fuel in car and was told to go to a certain petrol station and told I must fill the tank. I didnt use the dirty smelly car as much as I would have if Avis had given me what I was told I would get. I've just had the misfortune of being overcharged by Avis - they double charged me for the same booking. I rented a car from Edinburgh Airport. Was sold unrealistic extra insurance.. breakdown cover!! Why pay for this when if you are renting a car and it doesn't work, then surely the car should be replaced anyway? Have just returned from hiring a car from Avis at Lanzarote airport. On going to the collection desk their agent went overboard about "excess cover" until I told her that I had annual cover. We picked up the the car in a darkish area and drove 20 miles to our hotel. I always book LDW/CDW coverage whenever I rent a car. AVIS advertise that if you have rental car coverage through your personal insurance or charge card, LDW offers you maximum protection while your personal insurance or charge card may contain a deductible. By that statement it implies that a deductible will not be imposed. Do not trust this statement especially when you buy this coverage overseas. They do impose a deductible. We rented car from Avis in Aarhus,,Denmark. On return, we were shown a photo, only after we were inside the airport of two cigarette buts on the floor of the drivers side. We were a party of two families who do not smoke!! However they would not listen. The lady said she could not smell smoke but she had evidence. I booked through rentalcars a car with Avis. I read the terms and conditions and was familiar that there might be an additional charge on the petrol, depending on the arrangement. Avis sent me incomplete location details, so it took us 45 minutes to find the branch in the vast underground car park of Westfield Shopping Centre. AVIs hire cars in Malta. When we booked our weeks hire car online the price was £68.72 for a week. We ended up paying £158.95!! We arrived to be told there was a late fee of £15 as we were picking up the car after 8pm, although we had had to enter our arrival time when booking online and nowhere did it flag this up (and our plane had not been delayed) even though there were other folk picking up cars at this time also. Our rental that we had for less than 24 hours broke down in the middle of nowhere. We call Assistance and they tell us to contact the location we rented our vehicle, only to find out they can't do anything. We call assistance again, and they send a tow truck. What happened to service in Europe? We rented a car from AVIS (Sicily) for two days and it was a fight from start till end. My husband and I travel to Cyprus every year sometimes twice a year. Every time we get the offer from Monarch airlines to book with Avis and we are actually very happy with the service. The guy at Avis office is very useful and friendly. The only down site is that they do not keep the cars in the airport, they have a small mini bus that picks people up to drop them off to the closest Avis office which is of course very close by. Had an expensive and poor experience with Avis. We booked online and were charged with a $300 dollar extra expense when we went to get the car. They said it was for insurance and fee for dropping off in a different location from pick up. Well, I had a bad experience with AVIS's Faro. as some customers complained, they just give the key and tell you where the car is located, never go out to check the car with you. When we arrived, it was later evening; it was dark on the car park apart from some road-light. My wife and I had to look carefully to have spotted a few scratch and dent and reported to the staff on the desk. Reserved 5 days in advance a car in central London, went in to pick-up but was told there were no cars available and there was nothing anyone can do about it, the fools were sitting on an empty shop, not supplying what a customer had already paid. They tried to give me a rubbish car for a very high price, I told them to bog off. Then it will take several days for money to be given back, so end up out of pocket. Avis car hire proportion to be the customer friendly face of car hire across the world. I have just rented an expensive car from them for a week in Portugal. The hire prices claim to be inclusive of all taxes, but you will be hit with a bill for £100 on top of the advertised cost for airport charges, toll fee registration charges, and 'circulation' charges. Customer service was much better and confirmed that they would do a manual refund and it would take 48 hrs. Shame the guy in the branch couldn't do that! I've been having a winter getaway in Chile since the first week in February. During that time I reserved Avis cars for 4 separate roadtrips. On the first trip (Patagonia) everything was OK. On the second trip (Santiago and points north) I had a Group C car reserved but the manager stated that I would have to take a smaller Group B car at the same price because they were out of Group C cars. I don’t mind good aggressive selling. But when you are being sold ‘products’ hoping you will not notice or hiding stuff from you – is not on. I booked a car on the British Airways AVIS website. Appalling rushed service at the Alice Springs airport counter. When I booked on line I did not request comprehensive insurance as my work covers that. Yet, this was included automatically in my paperwork. And I blindly signed it trusting that it was the same as I had requested online through the Qantas site. I have rented cars for my one month holiday in the Algarve for the last three years, with Avis, having tried many many others,I found Avis to be easy to collect and return. The excellent nearly new vehicles were a treat, and added to my holiday enjoyment. I hired a car from avis Nottingham depot for 1 day. I rang the company instead of booking online and got a great deal, or so i thought. I pre-paid over the phone and was informed of the deposit and was happy until i went to pick the car up. I did an internet booking for a hire car from AVIS Edinburgh in june[ the cost was £175.74]-the holiday was actually in october 2012. Avis refused to accept our American Express (full coverage to 100,000 USD) insurance without putting a hold on the car for the full value of the car (10,000 Euros for a Suzuki roller skate in a poor state of maintenance).
