I hired a car for the weekend, traditionally when I have hired a car on previous occassions (not with Avis), I have been shown to my car, shown all the gadgets that you get with cars nowadays and also shown all dents and stratches etc. aVIS did not show me to my car, he just said its parked on level 3 and that was it, showed me a picture of the cra to point out all the dents etc. The car was not clean. As i am 19 it is near impossible to hire a car. But while spending hours on the internet i looked promising when i looked at Avis and they would rent a car to anyone over the age of 17. Or would they? I booked everything online except the payment would've been payed on the day of picking the car up. “NOT to be trusted! AVOID AVIS”

To avoid a longer queue at another company, we decided to try Avis - now we know why they had no queue. How on earth a company like this became so big is a miracle. We hired at Malaga Airport, and at first everything seemed OK. However, only later did we spot the huge amount which had been charged to our credit card without our permission. Hired a small car at Malaga Airport this year for a short golfing trip with work colleagues. I did not add any additional insurance or other services. Initially took payment from my debit card. Returned car undamaged and fully fuelled after 3 days. Discovered additional charge on bank statement later in the month for just over the same amount. Email sent to Avis for an explanation. Avis rented me a car in Dusseldorf, together with expensive sat nav for Europe. This device was unable to guide me along recently completed motorways across the border in Holland. The one thing AVIS are good at is ignoring customers, especially when there is an issue to be dealt with. Note their conspicuous silence on this site and others like it. Absolutely shocking customer service.

I hired a car in spain via the uk to be collected and dropped off at Barcelona airport. The hire was for two weeks. On arrival to the avis desk at terminal 1 (9.45pm) the desk (which the sign said wad open until 10pm was closed. A handwritten note said customers needed to go to terminal 2. This sounds like an easy thing to do, unless you know Barcelona airport. To move between the terminals involves a 15 minute walk and a 20 minute bus ride followed by another 10 minute walk. Please be aware that "Avis Prestige" is actually Miles & Miles Ltd (company number 00522998) and has nothing to do with Avis. I was in Turkey in May and emailed AVIS re dropping a car off for me. I emailed the UK and they said a rep from Izmir would call me. Never happened. Emailed again and they promised their man in Turkey would call. Never did. I hired a car from a small local firm and got everything I wanted - a response, politeness and value for money. I am writing be way of explanation of the situation that arose with my car hire at Munich Airport, through Budget Car Hire on Wednesday 6th August. On returning the car to the garage I was informed that I had damaged two of the alloy wheels and I was asked to sign a document accepting liability. I refused to sign the document as I had categorically not done the damage. No. We thought we had booked through Budget but they are actually a subsidiary of Avis. It was Avis that took the money without authorisation!

Ah, I understand, sorry.
No wonder you are unhappy. In our experience AVIS are dreadful. Everyone says the same, and I can't believe they're still in business.

We recently pre-booked two cars with Avis UK by telephone for collection at Malaga airport. Having been assured that EVERYTHING! was paid for and that I had taken out he Super Cover insurance (I emphasised several times that I wanted all areas of cover) which would mean no excess (WHICH COST APPROX £200 EXTRA per vehicle) we arrived to be told that this insurance only covered bodywork and not windscreen, or even worse, breakdown (considering it was Avis' own car, one would have thought that… Read Full Review

Avis car hire policy states that if you have a dd on license and it is older than 6 yrs it is at the discretion of the kiosk staff to decide whether or not the will hire a vehicle to you. Even after you have paid for the hire. Birmingham international airport kiosk advised me that I could not have a vehicle as I had to wait 10yrs.?? I reserved and paid up-front for an Avis car, then my plans changed and I didn't need it after all. I made sure I cancelled in good time (because if you leave it too late you get charged), received the cancellation confirmation email OK and thought no more about it. But this week when looking my card statement I realised I'd not received a refund. “Avis car rent : how your credit card will be racketed!”

Racket is the only word that comes to mind. We have rented through Expedia and discovered that insurance was not included! We had to pay extra 150 EUR on the spot. That racket does not end here: we brought the car back one hour later and were charged another 80 EUR, although our contact says 30 EUR for extra whole day (as it was long rent), we still have trouble recovering our money! “AVIS car, PENANG, MALAYSIA - PROFIT OVER SAFETY”

We were stuck in 36C heat in 90% humidity for 3 hours with a Toyota Camry from AVIS that broke down. We could have had a serious accident driving at speed on a very busy road. The car just stopped within seconds after the warning lights started flashing. The replacement car given had more than 153,000 km mileage on it. I booked a car asking to pick it up at St Julian and bring it over to the airport. When I arrived, the person told me I had to pay an extra €21ex-VAT for me to drop it at the airport. This fee was not in the quote and the person told me it was a new fee implemented this year. As I was stuck with them (go and hire a car on a Saturday morning in peak season), I took the car. “Avoid Avis at all costs.”

The staff at Avis gare du nord railway station in Paris need to find more things to do. We recently used avis and noticed that there were far too many members of staff quite clearly doing rather little and being of very little use to customers. Also ensure you are fully refunded for any unnecessary charges they may have taken from you- they have proved to be very unreliable with such issues. All in all- DON'T use avis! I wish I had read these reviews for Avis before booking with them.... bad mistake! I booked a hire car from Almeria airport in Spain with Avis, 6 days car hire ended up costing me over £450. Do NOT for a moment think that using a big company like Avis means that they can be trusted - they can't. Having booked and paid online for car hire and 'comprehensive insurance', the extra charges applied at the airport actually came to MORE than what we had already paid up front!
