I booked a car online with a fixed cost. When I arrived I was treated to a fifth rate fear mongering diatribe about insurance. Apparently the insurance chosen on line was not good enough and if I did not upgrade $15000 would be assigned to my credit card until the rental term was complete. The price had changed and with the insurance premium it actually doubled. “Avis Car Hire Malaga Airport”

We hired a car via Avis for pick-up at Malaga Airport in Aug 2014. Pick-up was relatively painless, albeit with the usual attempts to upgrade you (at your cost) & a bad explanation of the fuel pre-payment option that later caused me believe I'd wasted my money. The pick-up are was lit really badly (deliberately ?), so inspection of the outside of the car was almost impossible until we'd actually left. “HQ who dont care”

This is a patronising and frankly insulting letter received in response to a serious complaint where Avis Staff have  added insurances to a rental agreement. So far AVIS have REFUSED to act upon my complaint and have sent standard PRE-WRITTEN letters such as this one. You can clearly see the PRE-FORMATTED letter has been ADJUSTED to try and make it look personal. EPIC FAIL. “Dishonest and underhanded ”

Our first experience of a car hire company. We were delayed and had to wait a while to see an AVIS rep after a long flight to Florida. We had already sorted the car through BA. So it should have been simple. The employee who was not very clear spoken said he wanted to give us a different car and at no time did he ever mention any extra cost to us. Trying for five days to extend the agreement then, the MAIDSTONE branch tried to process the same transaction for the worng amount four days in a row which caused a FRAUD alert at my Bank - which stopped my card as a security measure! “Totally Rip Off”

I booked a car and picked up in London. The car they gave me had mechanical problem therefore I requested to change another one. I had to wait for over an hour and no one telling me the car was ready to go. Once I got the paperwork done, I drove from London to Wales. My wife booked a Mercedes A class in Austria, for our family holiday, when we arrived they said they only had a VW Polo. Then returning the car to Munich airport they said the arial was shorter than normal and added £50 on the bill. They did not provide me with a tape measure to check the size of the antenna. The car we hires was in good order and we had no problems with it during out 2 week stay. However when we took the car out we had asked for no added insurances except the ones included in our package. When we returned the car we were charged an extra $358 for added insurances. We originally booked a hire car from a 'less reputable' company for £400 for 2 weeks from Malaga airport. There was a mountain of paperwork and all sorts of clauses which sounded dodgy, so at the last minute we decided to splash out nearly 100,000 Avios points and £400 to have a car from Avis. Good luck but our complaint took over 6 weeks to receive a reply and then we still didn't get any apology or money back. After someone had looked into our issue and spoken to everyone (except us) it was decided that everything was in order. Basically they are telling us that we were lying and too bad.
Never trusting anything verbally agreed and not written down again!

Hired a car in Pisa and dropped it off in Lausanne. Firstly, we paid for an Audi A3 mid size car but received a 'specially reserved' Citroen Picasso C3 with Swiss plates, which did not have a full tank of fuel. We were initially told the car was full but the gauge was faulty, however, after refueling the car ourselves it registered to the top of the gauge, unlike when we collected it at the airport. Did they pay for your holiday and deliver caviar every day for breakfast?

This smacks of an Avis employee assigned to write a glowing review in broken English.

It stands out like a sore thumb on this other wise fairly honest looking page.

The worst company I have ever dealt with. It has taken 3 months to receive a reply to a complaint about poor customer care after escalating it twice. There was a claim for damage which they dropped after I provided evidence. Hired a car from Avis as part of a fly-drive package and wanted to leave the car at Avis's Fort Lauderdale location while on 7 days cruise.
