Had a Nokia 8310 for a year and a half and all was fine until not long ago when it would switch itself off, unlock without me touching it and send texts when I was halfway through writing them.

“I have had the Nokia 8310 for just under a year now....”

★★★☆☆

written by reptile on 23/05/2004

I have had the Nokia 8310 for just under a year now. At first i thought it was great it appeared to look great and have exiting games. But as timw went on the novelty sort of wore of. The games become quite boring after a while. It looks very good but it is old and out of date now. Also it doesn't have composer so every time you want a new tone you have to pay about £2-£3 for it! The internet works well and is easy to use. It has a calender which can process dates untill about the year 4000! you can have about 200 text messages in your inbox so it has a lot of memory. What did disapoint me thought is that you cant have a screen saver! As i said earlier you cant really hear the ringtones that well even when its on maximum volume, but maybe that is just my phone. I wouldn't really recommend buying this now because it is a bit out of date. However if you dont have alot of cash too spend on a mobile and dont really want a picture or a colour phone this is the mobile for you! Hope ive been of help and please feel free to rate this review.

★★★☆☆

written by kit w on 28/12/2003

When it first came out the Nokia 8310 was my dream mobile phone and i was really pleased when i got one for my birthday this time last year. AT first i love it, im not knocking the fact it is a good phone but its not up to nokias usual standards:
The build quality is poor and the standard cover is like the phones u get of a market stall!
It turns off alot when sending texts; when i go to press send it turns off and the text i have just typed is deleted as a result of this i have to save all my texts!
Its beginig to look bornig now and the fm radio is rubbish!!
This phone is just a 3310 that shrunk in the wash!
I wouldnt say dont buy it but there are better phones out there at cheaper prices!
personally it has put me off nokias and im goin to buy a sony ericsson T610 lets hope i like it a bit more than my 8310!

“Hi, i have had this phone for about 2 years (or...”

written by Dylanlewis on 23/08/2003

Hi, i have had this phone for about 2 years (or somewhere close). The early versions of this phone had major problems! Like all nokias they boast class, but unfortunatley having payed to have it sim free, i did feel left high and dry. The shop that i bought the phone from (time2talk in swansea) didnt want to know when i returned the phone. The phone had managed to turn itself off within 21 days of purchasing it. I was the left without a phone for over a month, while it was apparently being fixed. When i received the phone back the casing of it was slightly scratched and cracked but i was assured that this new version of software that was put on was going to be alright. Less than a month later the phone was being shipped off to nokia, because the shop that i bought it from didn't want anything to do with it. When i received the phone back, again with their latest software on, it was a slight improvment. This phone lasted quite a while actualy, over 6 months until the phone crashed again! Thankfully a nokia dealer,(UPLANDS CAR RADIO) replaced the phone because they could not get the software to work on the phone. Since then the nokia 8310 has been alright, i have had no major problems with it.

I have had three Nokia 8310 phones, the first two had a software fault, which when I received linked (over 159 character) messages, the old ones would keep coming back.
Occasionally lets you view text messages when phone is locked, but can't view all. Confusing!

“I "graduated" to a Nokia 8310 from the older 8210. Its...”

★★★★☆

written by Prion. on 08/07/2003

I "graduated" to a Nokia 8310 from the older 8210. Its main selling point was really its size. I wanted a phone that I could bring with me on nights out which would fit comfortably and inconspicuously into my trouser pocket. The 8310 does just that. It is a nice size phone, with decent reception and enough features to get you through, although it won't blow the minds of any technophiles. I have had it for over a year now so feel able to comment on it reasonably dispassionately.

Firstly, don't expect to get a trendsetting gadget with this. If you are after a phone which is functional, convenient and looks good this is for you, if not look elsewhere. The display is extremely outdated now as are most of its specs. No Bluetooth, Java, Colour or camera. One extremely useful feature for me is the radio. I go cycling with the earphones plugged in and it is much lighter than a discman, MP3 player or walkman.

The reception is average I would say and does not compare to a siemens I had a couple of years ago but that seems to be a problem with both Nokias I have so far owned. The vibrating alert is extremely vigorous and the ringtones very loud. Downloading ringtones is never a problem as with all Nokias.

Games are pretty standard. Snake 2 is a hoot. Bumper is a decent Pinball game. The other two are alright but won't set the world to rights.

Battery life is a plus point certainly and seems to outlast many phones. I charge on average every 4-5 days.

My only major gripe is the sluggish transition between menus. It seems to take an eternity to open the text message inbox particularly when there are more than 4 messages stored! When locking the keypad a display comes up saying Keypad Locked. When unlocking it a very similar looking display comes up to declare . "Kepad Unlocked". This is really unnecessary and adds to the frustration of an already sluggish phone as well as needless confusion.

The phone also feels often like it would snap in two if you dropped it too hard. This may be a reflection on its size but I have already had problems with the responsiveness of some of the buttons. In short it is not a trash about phone.

So, buy this phone for its size, radio, looks and weight if you must, just don't throw it too hard against the wall when you get miffed with its speed.

“The Nokia 8310 is good, but realy theres a big problem...”

★★★★☆

written by Will. on 13/04/2003

The Nokia 8310 is good, but realy theres a big problem in that the phone seems to cut off everytime I send a text message. It then says 'insert sim' even though the sim is obviously in the phone!!! My mate has also had the same problem with his phone so I have a feeling its a bug or fault when Nokia made it.

Its got a radio, but I never use it. I never saw the point in having a radio on a mobile phone to be honest. If I wanted to listen to music Id just put my personal stereo on.

Other than that theres nothing else different from this phone to other Nokia phones....except it looks smart, is a perfect size and has good ring tones (although not polyphonic)

i thought this phone was a breath of fresh air when it came out and i really wanted it.Even though i have had it for a year the quickness and style hasn't faded.Maybe the technical difficulties were just with your fone because mine is in mint condition and unless you bash it against walls i really don't see the problem.I dont know why you would want to buy the fone if all you wanted to do was text people as the radio and internet access is mint. And yes i am on T-Mobile. I would give this fone an 9/10 as some times it takes a long time to load up.

Why are you guys still moaning about this. Its simple either contact Nokia or Your network oporator. They will tell you where your nearest centre is where the phone can be fixed!!!! If you are on contract & have insurance (more fool you if you haven't) then all you do is tell them to send your phone off it shouldn't cost anything as all the phone needs is a little upgrade. I suffered for 6 months with this problem & yes it is very annoying, but it is well worth getting done. Please people talk to network operaters Orange is very help full as is Carphone Warehouse. Any of these will help you.

“I've owned my Nokia 8310 for almost a year now, and...”

★★★☆☆

written by Abi. on 04/03/2003

I've owned my Nokia 8310 for almost a year now, and for the first 3 months, it was a great phone. After this short period, the snake2 game stopped working, and if I attempted to access this game, the phone restarted itself.
After this, the phone turned itself off at random times(the most frequent, and annoying, being when i was writing a text!). This bothered me but it was livable with. More and more features have stopped working since, including voice recorder, and the off button and volume buttons have most recently sunk in, so if the 8310 turns itself off any time soon, I'll be unable to turn it back on!
I know I should have sent it for repair months ago, but now with only a month until my contract runs out, I'm going to hold out for a new phone. I think my confidence with nokia is running low, so I'm thinking of going for a PanasonicGD87 next.
The phone is great, when it works, but the breakages would put me off getting another nokia in the near future.

“The 8310 in my opinion does look very good and does...”

★★★★☆

written by Chris. on 08/12/2002

The 8310 in my opinion does look very good and does have a fair few worthwhile features packed inside but the problem is, the platform they have been built on is unstable. When I say this I mean the software and hardware of the phone. First of all the phone itself is on the fragile side, I droped mine from my bed by accident and the volume button broke inside, plus the case broke too. But the real problem lies in the software. On many many occasions my phone has locked up whilst typing a message and reset itself, and a number of times the phone has not responded when I have pressed the menu button to access the menu and I have had to turn the phone off then back on. Nokia may have corrected many of these issues now as my phone contains an early release of the software when I bought it back in late 2001. To round this up, by all means by the phone for the looks and good features, just dont expect it to work like clockwork all the time.

Hmmm... very pretty, but is it really worth £300??? With all the technology around with these polyphonic ring tones etc the 8310 seems like a bore!!! The main problem is the crashing.. Im not sure if it's connected to having too many messages but as I've written on the bad points side it can really naff you off! I'm just about to get a new T100samsung will let you know which I prefer.. whatever one it is will be spared from Ebay! ;o)

written by phantom. on 18/10/2002

The Nokia 8310 is a stylish looking phone but is let down by a few things. It does not have a composer and cannot access the internet using Windows XP (Nokia will never develop a modem driver for this phone). Previously, i had a 8850 and could store logo/tones as txts in my phone and send them on to others. Unfortunately, this phone cannot do that. Also, when you receive a text message that is supposed to flash, the 8310 does not support it.

Actually, my Nokia 8310 works fine with Windows XP -- no need for a driver (XP sets it up as a modem for you).
And if you want to use it for GPRS with your computer, your network should give you the software for this (Vodafone does -- it's called Vodafone Connect Me and is free on CD in Vodafone stores or downloadable online). I'm very impressed with this.

“This 8310 is my fourth nokia having had a 5110, 3210,...”

★★★★☆

written by Aidan. on 04/09/2002

This 8310 is my fourth nokia having had a 5110, 3210, 8210 and now 8310. I really liked my 8210, so when my contract was up I went for the 8310. I was really pleased with my 8310 when i first got it, but i have had a few problems. My 8310 resets itself randomly when I am sending text messages and at times when I called out it connected but I couldnt hear or talk (nor could the person at the other end). I took my phone to the Nokia repair centre and the guy said it was a common fault with the 8310 and reflashed the software. It seemed fine for a while, but it still resets itself when sending texts. My girlfriend has the same problems with her 8310 (we got them at the same time)I also feel the reception isnt great either, I thought it was much better on my old 8210, but to be honest I switched from Orange to Vodafone so that could be why. The guy at the Nokia centre also told me the 8210 was the most unreliable phone Nokia ever produced. I have absolutely no problems with mine.

The 8310 is a great looking phone, the backlit screen is excellent as is all the features in it. I would recommend this phone, but only when Nokia fix the bugs

written by Jay. on 07/08/2002

Brilliant phone with lots of features but this is where my praise for this phone ends. I have had a Samsung A300 previously and this always connected to calls but this one fails at times. The quality of call on the other end of the line is dyer. The design of the current Nokia range is getting worse by the day and this one has no exception. The bulid quality is very poor as my screen has already cracked in top left corner and my covers is nearly hanging off the phone. This is my 5 Nokia after having a 3210, 3310, 3330, and a 7110 and this one has been a major dissapointment. I am now preparing to change this phone to the new Samsung T100. Don't buy this phone if you have big fingers and you need a reliable phone.

The Nokia 8310 mobile phone may be "the future" but how can this be so when it doesn't allow music downloads, logos, picture messages, and doesn't even have a colour screen?

It has been a bit of a let-down.

Considering when this phone was brought out there were not other phones with colour screens I don't think it is a letdown at all. When the 8310 was brought out it was the only phone to have a radio on it for a start. Also there are not many phones out there that are directed at the fashion market that has so many features as this phone.

Another point you say you can't download logos, ringtones and picture messages to this phone.... WRONG!!
You can download all of these features 'til your hearts content (just like any other phone) from websites or phone numbers. If your stupid enough to want to buy them!!!

Exactly. This was NOT the first phone on the market with a Radio however maybe the first one in your area with it.
Also, when it was released, I do believe that there were no colour screens so again, not a valid point.
Certainly now you would not buy one as there are many with colour screens & cameras etc.

I wonder why Nokia is still releasing their mobile phones with so many software bugs!! I used the 8210 before, with 2 times software update. Now with the 8310, it's back again to the Nokia shop for a software update. Nokia must be thinking: "Those people are so stupid, they will keep buying our phones, even with so many bugs..."

The radio on the Nokia 8310 mobile phone is fantastic as the sound quality is unbelieveable, and the headset that comes with it is good too.
I have a problem with the voice activation as it does not seem to work. How DOES it work?! I managed to record the commands but can't seem to work the phone with them.
If you are a poser then you must buy it just for the extra street cred.
