i have had my Dyson dc01 for 15 years and it just wont stop working :) sure its old and out of date but that doesn't mean that it is a bad vacuum. i must say when they came out they where a little pricy but i guess you get what you pay for :P they just don't want to die. most people change the belt and say they perform better but i have never had to replace a belt and i can say it works wonderful, they are good old made in England wonders that work better than modern vacuums with out the... This Dyson DC01 was bought for me by my husband as a surprise as the old hoover kept letting us down. This was over 20 years ago. It has had a new hose, wand, fan belt and foot plate and is going as well as when it was first purchased. The brushes will be the next buy as they are wearing down.Thank you Dyson, money well spent. I would have liked to know that the lack of suction from the hose was a result of blocked filters, which when changed worked perfectly. (read more)

I bought my DC01 when they first came out nearly 20 years ago. The sales lady in Currys recommended it as I had a cat. I recommended it to my sister in law when she needed a new vacuum cleaner and she discovered that Dyson had reduced the power on subsequent models as people were finding the suction too powerful thus making them hard to push! Luckily mine has full power! 20 years on it is still going strong. I've had to replace the hose, but Dyson sell spares on their website. I love my... (read more)

I have owned my DC01 since Feb 1996 and have only ever had one problem - to replace the belt when it got something caught round it.

It is still going strong, still on the original brush though we really ought to replace it now.

It has only ever lost suction when the tube gets clogged and if we leave the filters in too long. I haven't bought any new filters in 5 years as they are now washable and last a long long time.

“Positives: ”

Written on: 17/02/2010 by salderney (3 reviews written)

Positives:
Bag-less, so no bags, however such a messy job to empty, defeats the object.
Decent manouverability

Negatives:
-Poor build quality, local Dyson engineer is like family I know him so well from so many call outs during the guarantee period.
-Expensive
-Ugly
-Not particularly good at it's job
-You can get the same thing (that's probably better) from another brand for a fraction of the cost
-Very tacky

So the first and only Dyson I ever bought. Clever advertising however... (read more)

I have had my Dyson DC0 1 since early 2000~and it is still going strong and does a good job on my carpets and constant cat fluff. Often needs declogging by removing the base plate

I bought a Dyson DC01 upright cleaner about 15 years ago when they were quite new. It has cleaned my family home brilliantly, but I made sure I used only genuine Dyson filters, which were disposable until the last few years when they made washable ones. Other reviewers have spoken of a loss of suction and suggested checking the narrow airways for blockages. These checks are worth doing but the main problem is that even the genuine Dyson belt hardens and elongates by up to 50% over time. This means that although the suction may be optimum, the rotating brush does not have enough torque to pick up hair etc. I replaced the belt and the improvement was amazing. (read more)

I have had this for almost 10 years. I bought the special 'Antartic' edition - only difference was the colour of grey and blue.

It has never gone wrong, and always worked at full power. We accidentally sucked up the power cable which led to a few nicks and it stopped working. Luckily this was within a metre or two of the plug, so I cut the cable and reattached the plug and all works well - albeit 2m shorter....

Maybe that won't apply to the DC01 specifically, but at the rate that dyson is creating new technology and new models, I'm sure it will continue for a few decades to be a well-known household brand, for the better.

I would urge people to avoid Dysons until they have sorted out their reliability.

Which? recently did a survey and Dyson was the most unreliable make inspite of being the most popular.

The vacuum freqently got blocked - the internal paths for dust were poor so larger bits got caught and smaller bits piled into these resulting in total blockage. Cleaning was a nightmare - 4 screws for beater area, garden cane for internals.

Suction on hose was poor even at its best.

Hi there.
Hope that you read this review.
Yes I have heard of this problem on the Dyson DC01 and 04's.
It is a design fault with the way the cable enters the machine. It is held inside the machine with a metal clamp. As you can imagine after using the machine for a while and pulling on the cable, as you do naturally when using an upright cleaner, it causes the cable to start breaking up internally. It is a design fault and Dyson should not charge you for the service or new machine which they should give you!

Yes, machine started turning itself off whilst vacuuming, always when cable was waving about behind. Upon inspection, i.e., opening the casing, a couple of the wires had lost their insulation thereby shorting off and on. Cut off broken bit and replaced. Works fine.

Clumsy, awkward, ugly, noisy, heavy, fragile and unreliable. The hose arrangement is a masterpiece of bad design, the cable has reverted back to the bad old days of "wind it around the hooks and hope it stays". Very good at blowing the dust half way across the hall, not so good at picking it up after a few year's use. Desperately over-rated. Try an Oreck - that's what I call good design. (read more)

I agree with you entirley.

I have had a Dyson DC03 and the about of problems ive had with it.

I don't find it dependable, as it's not a reliable vacuum cleaner. Because the cleaner is so noisy you just don't know what is wrong with it, if it even has a fault or if it just a normal noise.

In my Dyson Vacuum Cleaner ive had a new motor (I think, Dyson say yes and no), 3 new clutches, a new hose, a new handle cap, a new handle and wand. A new cleaner head, a new soleplate. Soon the brushbar will need replacing.

The vacuum cleaner is only nearly 3 years old however, it's had these new parts so I consider the machine to be only 2 years old literally.

Dyson is just a gimmick and if you open it up, you see that the the parts are nothing special.

I have a Dyson 8 root cyclone. The belt is forever breaking, and now I find..after 2 years, that the brush has melted where the belt slots, making the thing incapable of performing. Now I have to find out where I can obtain the required brush holder, brush included. Also, on inspection, I found that the edges on the part that held the belt were very rough , making the belt to snap. Obviously a design fault.
Very dissatisfied. I agree with you.

I have had Dyson DC04 vacuum cleaner for about six month now and its has caused me absolutely misery, I have had repairs after repairs and dyson have been very, poor. I have had problems with the cord rewinding to three head replacements, yes three. I then decided to complain and was treated very poorly, be warned! I now have a miele revolution "what difference" (read more)

I have had a Dyson Vacuum Cleaner for 8 years, my sister and parents for around the same time. Never had a problem. Works perfectly and the customer service I received when it was serviced was excellent. During transport by Parcel Force the handle got broken on delivery to the service centre. Dyson contacted me re this and the next day I received a new one, complete with guarantee and a letter of apology.
I have now bought a washing machine by Dyson and when the time comes to replace the vacuum cleaner, it will be a Dyson also.

All previous vacuum cleaners lasted many years and are still within the family. After three years of this machine, it needs replacing. I believe I was persuaded to purchase by the excellent marketing of the product by Dyson. I would never purchase another Dyson product regardless of any improvements the company makes in their products. (read more)

I purchased an electrolux bagless hoover three months ago and in that time it started to clog up, suction decreased dramatically and it was impossible to hoover up bits of fluff etc. I therefore decided to by a dyson, for £220. I thought that this was expensive, but when i turned it on, it was seriously worth the money. It picks up everything, cleans very well, can be used for all areas of the home even cleaning the car. It is user friendly, easy to use, stylish and with a guarantee. I can see why dyson's are regarded as the best and i have the proof, it far out does any other hoovers on the market and that £220 is certainly worth it. It has made me do the hoovering instead of my g.friend, as it is so good and enjoyable. Dyson has sure got it right.

Looks good, and was much better initially than anything we'd had before - you could also see what you were picking up (household divided as to whether this is a good point or not.
But like all the other reviews, we are now having to strip it every couple of weeks to unblock the narrow channel leading from the head into the body. And the detachable hose has no suction whatsoever (at least it doesn't then get blocked) - we're taking the DC01 back to try and get refund, and go for DC04 instead... (read more)

Had DC01 for almost three years, used daily. Just scrapped it. During this time it has been almost totally rebuilt.(new hose, wand, soleplate, wheel in addition to normal replacement parts). Machine continued to disintegrate making it uneconomic to repair. Looks good! (read more)

We've had a DC01 for a while now, and whilst it's an effective machine, it hasn't been terribly reliable. You get the impression Dyson like to get their customers to do some of their testing for them - an old British Leyland trick that might pay off in the short term but backfires in the longer term.
