Good Points: This is an absorbing story, the characters and locations beautifully drawn. Also very topical, bearing in mind what some of the recent war veterans are claiming.
Bad Points: Not easy to put down...
General comments: The action in Looking for Mr Nobody by Sue Rann takes place in the darker recesses of Amsterdam where lost souls and vagrants have an unknown history and an unlikely future.
Robin Carlson, an outwardly feisty thirty-something year old, uses her military training to survive on the fringes, finding employment as a bodyguard or bouncer.
She's learnt a few hard lessons of life, and accepts that there's always a price to be paid. When an on/off boyfriend asks to lay low in her flat for a few days, she doesn't hesitate.
He mysteriously disappears, and her desperate bid to find him leads her into the secret and shadowy world of illegal designer drugs where vast financial rewards are to be achieved and are ruthlessly pursued.
Robin does not look back at her past very often. An estranged General who christened her 'Robin' and gave her a gun as a comfort blanket, is among the memories she keeps a closed lid on.
Vagrant Jan Wolf does try to look back into his past - but it's a short past, and he cannot remember anything beyond being treated in hospital for gunshot wounds.
Which leaves him wandering the streets unable to recall if he did once have a home or a family.
He appreciates a particular kindness of another vagrant and when she goes missing, he is concerned enough to try and find her.
Inevitably, Jan and Robin's paths are going to cross, and when they do it seems it's Jan's locked past that holds the solution.
But, somebody wants to find Jan too and not because they are concerned for his safety, and they are desperate.
Jan has to remember before ignorance kills him.
