“Cheap MOT...not a good thing!”

We did the usual phone around for prices as we needed two tyres replacing. we phoned the crewe branch and were told we could have buy one get one free on the avon tyres at £108. When we got there all the lads were sitting on the floor to the workshop so not busy, the guy in the office said the deal didn't exist. Having just watched BBC prog Dont Get Done Get Dom I have to relay my daughters experience after having an oil and filter change at one of their Cardiff centres ,having had the work done within her driving 100 yards I had a call from her asking should her car be bellowing smoke I told her to go right back and I would be there in a few minutes ,as in the BBC prog we were told not to worry as National would sort it out,all this took place on a saturday to cut a long story short she was given... I cannot believe what I was quoted for a full exhaust - £350 this was the starting post. They then said they could give me a discount and could do it for £272, as I was unsure how far my car could travel with a floppy exhaust, I felt under pressure to have it done. I ordered some tyres online via tyre shopper part of National tyres when I arrived at the National tyre depot in Barnstaple Devon I was met by a smug service manager who treated me with contempt and said that I had ordered the wrong speed rating T instead on "V" he said that it was all down to me and that's what happens when people order on line. I took my car to the Bedford branch this morning for an MOT test. They failed it on a foggy headlamp lens and leaky read shock absorber and they quoted me £496 to fix it. I took it away to another centre who said neither item would have failed with them, but I asked them to fix them anyway, which they did, and they MOTd it again from scratch, and it still only cost me £225. We took our 3 year old Fiat 500 to the Orpington branch for MOT on 23.3.13. The car was failed, they said there was excessive dust on cover of anti roll bars and the headlights needed aligning (they are electronically aligned) He also said we needed 4 new tyres which we pointed out to him that this was advisory, not a requirement to pass the test- he didn't want us to see that though! Hi all, I left my car for an MOT test into National Tyres and Autocare in (Shawlands) Glasgow. After checking the car, NATIONAL TYRES call me back saying that the car needed the rear brakes to be done in order to pass the MOT. At that point, I asked them to give me a quote for the parts and labour and I agreed with them not to do anything until I could check the quote with them that evening after work. I have received very pathetic customer services in bath lane, Newcastle upon Tyne branch. What happened was my car wasn’t started up yesterday and I have called the breakdown engineer to have a check. He has found it was the battery completely flat and he has used his machine to test my car was charging no problem and the car battery was drained very quick and looked like leaking. Woke up to a flat tyre , saw it had a screw in it so limped down to my local branch (end of the road) Was told it couldn't be repaired and on inspection was told I needed two replacing. Must of been my lucky day as they were on offer bogof (apparently) £126 later I was informed my track rod ends were in bad shape and needed replacing. I replaced tyres in National a couple of weeks ago and everything went smooth and price was OK but I have been advised about worn brake discs and pads and was given a quote for roughly 140 ponuds for everything. Just picked up my car. 1 front brake disc 90 ( eurocarparts 30) 1 canliper 180 (eurocarparts 85) etc. Bile came up to 400 pounds. I purchased two tyres through Tyre Shopper and went to National Car Tyres in Bristol to have them fitted. They fitted the tyres, car felt a bit bumpy and I thought perhaps the tyre pressures were wrong, wasn't until I was driving up the motorway at 70 mph the steering started to vibrate badly, really frightened me. I only use this branch for oil changes, and I always check that they've actually changed the oil, replaced the filter and done it up properly. Every time I've been in there, people have come in with problems with previous jobs to be put right.

Thanks for this - I will take photos of wheel rims before hand. Have had similar problem when an inexperienced boy stripped the thread on the car as he was putting the tyre back on. They denied it of course! Cost me £100 at another garage.

Wow, just been to National Tyres, Woodbridge Road Ipswich. If you want to get totally ignored and just watch the fitters chat with their girlfriends and mates instead of bothering to fit your tyres then this is the place for you ! Terrible customer service, the worst I have ever come across. Nearly an hour to fit 2 tyres, no other customers there.......I did get a really good deal on the tyres from tyreshopper.co.uk, no problem with them. I have just used them and they damaged one of my alloys.They are also saying that It was kerb damage and not there machine.My car is nearly new with sensors and I have hit no kerbs, I am a careful driver and am very upset that I now have a damaged alloy.

They, as is usual for National Tyres, lied to you.
With the exception of Finland & Norway in winter, the legal limit for car tyres in Europe is 1.6mm.

My main problem is my car went in for its MOT at the Guildford branch, and it failed. They said that it failed because: 1) both headlamps aim are too low 2) offside rear brake binding 3) offside rear brake disc in such a condition that it is seriously weakened I was quoted £185 each for the brake calipers and the other items totalled £292, so a total of £652 was quoted. My wife bought some tyres from the Grays branch of National tyres whilst I was away on business and to be fair, all went well albeit the staff where rather gruff. A few weeks later we had a nail in one of the new tyres and so returned to have it repaired. The nail was in the tread and so should have been a simple plug job, but the guy there tried to tell me it was irrepairable and I would need a new tyre! Well today I took my Vauxhall Frontera to the Worthing, West Sussex Branch of National Tyres. I had called earlier in the day and booked my Vauxhall Frontera in at the Branch to have the tracking adjusted as the car pulls to the left ever so slightly. UPDATE - After complaining to their head office, I received a call from the area manager who apologized for the treatment I'd received at the Worthing Branch and explained that the Manager there had been told in no uncertain terms that the Discount Vouchers from their Web Site should be honored for ALL vehicles so long as presented by a private customer.
I was offered the opportunity to take the car to the Bognor Branch which I accepted and I have to say, the staff and the Manager couldn't have been more pleasant and helpful.
They checked and adjusted the tracking for me all free of charge and it took less than half an hour.
I have to say the premises at Bognor is much better than Worthing as well. The reception / customer waiting area at Bognor is clean, modern and well presented. In comparison Worthing is run down, grubby, crampt and generally uninviting.
So for me, Bognor where superb but I'd be hard pressed to ever want to set foot in the Worthing Branch ever again.

I booked a cheap oil change. When I dropped the car off I was phoned 10minuted later to say they couldn't get the sump plug off. in fact that had used the wrong tool and had rounded it off. It was then leaking and I was told that they could not put it back in or out. (read more)

I had the misfortune to use National Tyres Kingston to replace my front tyres on my Audi for a long trip to France. In France I developed a wheel wobble owing to dodgy balancing so, I took it to a French tyre specialist. He immediately told me that my new front tyres were illegal because the speed rating was wrong and this had invalidated my insurance. I was a bit wary the first time I went there - my brakes had a serious problem and I was in a hurry and they were the nearest people that could sort me out quickly. I thought that I would get ripped off and was prepared for it, but my experience was very positive. I recently attended the National Tyre and Autocare Garage in Blyth for 4 new tyres, when I returned to collect my car I was informed that the CV Boots on both front axels were damaged and would cost £120 if I chose them to do the work. They told me the damage may have been from bearing being changed. They also told me the track rod ends could be damaged changing the CV Boots. Booked an appointment at Croydon branch for wheel alignment with tony at Croydon branch. Reached and no one at reception. After 10 mins he found someone who said will check and then after another 15 mins he said the mechanic was very busy today with another car and couldn't see me today. He just said come Tomorow. My advice is to avoid going for tyres too. In april 2013 I went to have a rear tyre replaced and while I was waiting in the waiting area they came to tell me that my vehicle was accidentally damaged inside their garage. The damages are about £1,200 as they destroyed the right wing, they cut throught he metal, the front light, the bumpers and so on. It's been a month now, I posted 3 letters and still no reply. They are not willing to pay the cost for the repairs, so it has to go to the court. There is nothing left to do with them. Avoid them like the plague. I went for a tyre and I ended up with lots more.
