Love this motor. Drives very nicely. Very spacious cabin, huge boot. In my opinion a lot of car for little money. I'll be back on if anything goes wrong. So far so good. I was a bit sceptical about getting a Vectra but now glad I did, having scaled down from E-Class Merc. Manual very nice, chunky car with a nice firm and responsive ride. I'm 6'3 and not small and have loads of room. Obvious to say get one with FSH and as low mileage as possible. Good family motor. Only given 3 stars for reliability as I've not long had the car. Otherwise ticks all my boxes.

“Like the earlier post, my 2003 Vectra 2.2 auto...”

Like the earlier post, my 2003 Vectra 2.2 auto suffered from complete gearbox failure. Vauxhall contributed towards the cost as I had reported problems with the gearbox within the warranty period. 16 months and 12,000 miles later now out of warranty it failed again. Diagnostics first reported this as the Auto ECU but replacing it made no difference and I was advised it needed a new auto and also a front spring had gone. So, I am left with a 5 and half year old car that is scrap which cost £140 for the tow home and after considerable argument £170 for the diagnostics to tell me the wrong fault.

I will never buy another vauxhall...

“I submitted a review of this car in 2004 and just...”

I submitted a review of this car in 2004 and just wanted to update the record as to what has happened recently. Well, I sold the car in 2005 to my brother in law it had been fine no problems under warranty. Since he has had it, it has been in and out of the garage for a few minor faults and ABS light kept coming on, then he had the brake discs and pads all changed at 63,000 miles, which I suppose is not too bad for an automatic. But then three weeks ago it all went wrong, the engine management and catalyst lights both came on and he lost all but gear 2 and 5 and had to struggle to very slow get home in manual mode. The dealer collected the vehicle and reported back that it was an internal gearbox failure and it would need a new gearbox. The gear box would cost £3,000 to replace but after much negotiation Vauxhall agreed to pay 50% of this.

But the dealer says it is only the second Vectra that they have had, that needed a new gearbox!

“Owned the Vauxhall Vectra 2.2i LS Auto 4 Door family...”

Owned the Vauxhall Vectra 2.2i LS Auto 4 Door family car since May 03 previously had an old vectra 2.0i GLS Auto for 6 years. In my opinion this is Vauxhalls worst auto gearbox so far - at certain times the car revs between gears and then lurches forward. Had this checked by the dealer and was told that it was normal and that the car has to learn your driving style! Otherwise it's not a bad family car - especially if you avoid the auto version.

I am considering an auto diesel for my next purchase, looks like it’s the Mondeo then!

Jose Figueira's Response to jerick's Review

Very interesting to read your comment on the gearbox. I have a GSi 3200cc V6 2003 Vectra, and whilst the car is a delight to drive, the gearbox has been back a dozen times for the same reasons as you mention, lurching and revving in between channels for 1 second or so. This is an auto box, so how can it do this? Also, I've noticed that the 'manual' shift is very slow, and I've regularly hit the rev limiter, even though the up-shift has been made in good time. Vauxhall have even changed the whole gearbox, throttle potentiometer twice, the gearbox fluid several times, and dual circuit radiator twice, also BEFORE stating that, this is a 'feature' of the car and gearbox! Poppycock. They've made a bad design and cannot admit that. My driving should be fairly good since I'm an IAM driver an Advanced Driver Trainer and have a racing licence etc. etc.. So I believe I'm a reasonable driver, and if Vauxhall have spent all of this money prior to saying it's a feature of the gearbox... who's kidding who?
