Good Points: An absolutely amazing first account of the hopes and fears of protecting our country during WWII. Geoffrey Wellum writes in such a superb fashion, to that which you are turely inside his private thoughts that you come to understand the way he thinks, allowing the reader to be drawn in. Relating to the fact that even heroes fear something, and yet they battle on. Courageous and triumphant. The book is int winded with quotes of Winston Churchill, creating a sense of confidence and self assurance of what an Empire Britain once was. Awe- insuring. I have honestly not read anything better. What i would do to meet a person with sure personality, bravery, skill as Sir Geoffrey Wellum. A benchmark to what all young people should aim to be. Fantastic.
Bad Points: I feel sorry for the germans! hah!
General comments: This book is self inspiring in its self. I was able to really relate and understand exactly how Mr Wellum was thinking. I started to read this book when i was 18, which if you read the book is around the same age in which G.Wellum is fighting WWII. This book gave me so much motivation and thought that i have ended up undertaking a Pilots Training Course at university. I take my hat off to each and every word written.

This book gripped me from the moment I opened it.
Mr Wellum takes you through what it really was like being a Spitfire pilot during the Second World War. You actually feel like your in the aircraft with him in battles that are eye blisteringly fast. The book showed all aspects of being a fighter pilot. When the book was finished I felt like I'd just landed and my fingers were scorched. What a book.

The book is an account of a young pilots training and operational experiences before and during the Battle of Britain.
Written as a serious of episodes rather than a continuous narrative this book takes the reader through training, thrilling and nerve racking dog-fights, terrifying accounts of navigation in bad weather, the stress of constant pressure and compassionate accounts of and reactions to the death of colleagues and enemies.
An account that will move the reader and make his hair s ...
