Hargate Hill has great facilities with ample menage space and a good set of show jumps. Although for a livery, the indoor school is often unavailable due to lessons being taught there and in the winter it is often overcrowded. however if you are prepared to go up early when it is snowing it is often deserted. i kept my competition horse there for 2 years and kept to myself in one of the quieter blocks on the yard. i found the staff very friendly and helpful when i needed them especially when... Competitively priced for the facilities on offer as a livery: use of indoor and outdoor schools, show jumps and working hunter fences, and horse walker which usually works. However the advertised "shower room" has been out of functional use for about 4 years, and I can't remember the last time the solarium looked safe. The cross country is also barely useable due to the state of the fields (which I will come to later). And although stabling prices are competitive, hay and bedding have... (read more)

This is a very inaccurate, and rather rude and spiteful review of Hargate Hill Equestrian Centre, written, I suspect, by a certain person who doesn't get her own way when she thinks she should. I have been involved with the yard for nearly 30 years and have never come across "blatant favouritism" or "special treatment" and as one of the "older clients" I don't find the atmosphere soured by any such thing. I do find, though, that the right approach usually clears up any incipient problems.

I am very disappointed to see the negative comments here but feel that some of them are down to sour grapes and lack of experience. I have kept my horse at Hargate Hill Equestrian Centre for 11 years and before that was a client of the yard from the 1980s onward. I have been involved with horses for nearly 60 years so know what I'm about and would remove my horse like a shot if I met with the sort of conditions and intransigence that other reviewers have reported. The yard passes its... (read more)

Hargate hill is the worst yard ever if your thinking of putting your pony on this yard big mistake!! The turn out is discusting lots of horses on this yard being turned out in knee deep mud every day if you want your pony to live out its with the school ponys and they put out one bale between them all which causes them to fight alot our pony was only there for two weeks and she ended up with two big kicks one on her leg the other on her bum she also had two rugs ripped and whenever we... I have byeen a client at Hargate Hill Equestrian Centre since the 1980s and have kept my own horse there for 11 years. The centre is situated on the edge of the Pennine Chain on heavy clay soil and the topograhy of the area means that it rains a lot and the fields get muddy. Hardly the Yard Owner's fault and the facilities and the avantages of the yard far out-weigh the mud.
The management and staff are helpful and kind and often go beyond the call of duty to help out in a crisis and I have never been "mithered" for money.
I have nearly 60 years experience with horses and I can assure you that I would never keep a horse on a substandard yard.
The OP's review smacks of sour grapes and s/he should remember that sneaking off without paying your debts is theft.

Hargate Hill has the facilitates but Not the Management, Any complaints you may have are met with the simple answer of "If you dont like it move off" The turnout is appalling the field is knee deep clay that once you get stuck in you cant get out, There is more than 20 horses out and only two piles of hay which causes alot of fighting resulting in injury to all our horses and ripped rugs, The fields are never rotated so your horse is stuck in the same muddy conditions all year round. Hargate Hill is a great riding school and livery facility. The yard is kept clean and tidy at all times. The riding school horses and ponies are kept in good condition and are good to ride. There are horses for all abilities and once that you have been riding there a while you can usually choose the horse you would like to ride. The lessons are varied, you can learn something new each time you go. There are four arenas (2 outdoor, one indoor and an outdoor jumping). The instructors are fair... (read more)

Stabling quality is reasonable, and there is adequete turnout in Summer months. However overnight turn out is of poor quality and emphasis in recent years appears to be on making the most hay possible rather than appropriately rotating turnout, resulting in the poor quality of the most frequently used fields. I moved my horse to Hargate Hill, as a livery, about 6 months ago.
As I'm stabled in the riding school block, I feel suitably justified to comment on both Hargate's livery services and their riding school.
As I attend to my own horse every morning and evening, I can confirm that the riding school horses and ponies are very well looked after. Jenna, the yard manager, ensures that no horse is overworked. After all, these horses and ponies are chosen specifically to suit a riding school...

I have ridden at Hargate Hill Equestrian Centre for over 20 years and when I bought my first horse I chose to keep him there because I was so impressed with the set-up. He's lived there for 10 years and only exceptional circumstances would make me move him. The stabling is safe, secure and warm and the staff can be relied on to do what they are asked to do. There is a cafe, horse walker, three outdoors, a jumping arena with many jumps, a massive indoor school, lots of stables, staff and loads of advice.
The only fault I can find is that all food and bedding must be bought from Hargate. However, it is good quality so it isn't really a problem.

Nancy told me that she thinks riders should try harder to be more polite to the horses and only ask for work nicely. If this does not happen then she believes it is part of the horse's job to teach the rider to act considerately.

I GO TO HARGATE HILL. I HAVEN'T BEEN THERE LONG AND I CAN ALREADY CANTER. IT IS REALLY GOOD PRICE ASWELL. I RIDE SULTON THE MOST BUT HE IS OLD AND SOMETIMES WON'T CANTER FOR YOU BECAUSE HE IS VERY SLOW. I ALSO RIDE BLAZE. WHEN YOU HAVE GOT A WHIP HE IS VERY GOOD FOR YOU. WHEN YOU HAVEN'T GOT A WHIP HE IS QUITE SLOW. SO THIS RIDING SCHOOL IS VERY GOOD.
Written on: 31/01/2006
We actually know the horses very well as we have been there for 4-5 years. I could already canter but they progressed me, but then what? Yes you do a few jumps, and a few more. But you don't technically learn that much. Also in the summer holidays I went to Wales and the difference in the horses characters compared to hargate hill was shocking. The horses actually WANTED to go on hack (not a walk on a dirt track with a lead rein like hargate hill) A proper hack over the hills. When you ride Sultan or Blaze, so they seem enthusiastic to you? Or Charlie or Mac or any other horse? No because all they have to look forward to is a common meal and a trot with some unexperienced child whipping them! Sorry but I think they DO need to sort out lots of things. I went for a "Pony Day" last year i.e Lets charge you £27 for you to work for us! No no matter what you say that isn't right., THEY should be WANTING us to help not charging us! Overall, i think Hargate Hill is great for beginners but no use to people like me who are advanced or need improving further.
Written on: 19/02/2007
Actually, Biffabean, I've been riding for over half a century and I can still learn new things from the staff at Hargate.

Someone commented that it's hard to get through on the telephone. Well, choose your time more carefully, for example, if you ring up more or less on the hour there is usually someone in the office sorting out fees, hats and what have you. Otherwise, do you think it more important to answer the phone than to care for the horses properly? Apart from anything else, your lessons would be considerably more expensive if the school employed a full time receptionist to sit in the office and await your phone call.

As for Sultan and Blaze : Sultan is an old horse who only does an occasional walk-out with young children - just enough to keep him interested in life. Blaze is used, among other things for young riders - would you really want a corned-up, excitable mad-monster when you were learning to ride? Hargate has horses to suit all levels of rider and often they are the same horses. Horses respond to their riders and behave accordingly - Often the horse who is a suitable ride for a nervous older lady who wants to hack quietly round the lanes is the same horse who will take a seasoned huntsman out for an exhilarating day following the drag hounds at twenty miles an hour, taking flying leaps over walls and huge hedges, and the same horse will often teach beginners or disabled riders safely during the week. And Hargate Hill has a number of horses who are like that.

Hi,
I keep my horse at Hargate Hill and would like to share some of my stories. The lane to get on to the farm is a disgrace as is the turnout. The fields are practically a mud bath for you and your horse! The prices are ridiculous at £22 a week just for stabling! The hay and straw is often mouldy and unable to give to your horse. The owner of the yard (name not mentioned) has offered facilities like a xc course which hasn't been built and all year grazing when before now i have had to keep my horse in for a considerable number of months. The staff are rude and honestly i don't know why there hasn't been any complaints as the have often not provided help for me. I would not reccomend this yard to anybody.
Written on: 29/05/2006
I also keep my horse there the xc course is fully built you just haven't found it, the lane is constantly trying to be improved and the turnout on the bottom yard is exellent but top yard isn't as good.
Written on: 19/02/2007
Well, Pitchfork, one wonders why you stay.

I've kept my horse there for nearly 7 years and would not move him, despite the inconvenience of traveling to and from the yard and fitting in full-time work and dependent relatives.

The yard IS expensive, but no more so than other yards in the district which don't have the facilities and the support structure that Hargate Hill offers.

I hardly think you can blame the proprietor of the yard for the state of the weather and therefore the mud! There is restricted turn-out at this time of year in order to keep the fields in good nick for 24 hour grazing in the summer. I'm sure the horses prefer that to long hours turned out in cold wet winter fields with little in the way of tasty grass - a problem common to all yards at this time of year. In fact, there are yards in the area which don't allow any winter turn-out!

I disagree with you. I go to hargate regulary and i love the atmosphere up there. The reason a member of staff may have said this to you is that you have to have a half hour lesson before you are allowed to be put in to a group lesson. As you have said, it would be unfair to put you in with more experienced riders as they would have to pay more attention to you. You are best having a few private lessons before you start having group ones. I give hargate hill 5*.

I go riding at Hargate Hill and thoroughly enjoy the riding lessons and the pony days that they run in the holidays. I am 9 and the cost of the pony day is cheaper than the cost of my child minder and the day is far more fun. The staff are great and always make me feel welcome and make the pony days interesting.
I don't go riding all the time as I have several other hobbies and time and money dont always allow me to commit to every weekend but when I do go the staff always remember my name and treat me nicely. I think Hargate Hill is really great and for value for money and overall ratings I would give a 9 out of 10.

When I went up to Hargate Hill Glossop riding school to take a look round with my daughter, a young girl rudely asked me if I had a reason to be there. I told her I was looking round, and she told me that I had to book a lesson to be there. I decided to book a hack and she asked me if I had ridden before. I said no she told me I could only do a hack if I was experienced. I did not go back there, and have now found a nice riding school in Poynton which acquire for any ability. Well that's... I phoned Hargate Hill to ask about hacks out for adults. I was told by a very rude girl "Yes we do but you have to be an experienced rider and bring all your own equipment" I said I could do that & had been riding for over 21 years, I hadn't ridden for 3 yrs after having a child & wanted to start riding again before I bought another horse. I asked when I could book & she replied "We couldn't possibly do a weekend cause we're far to busy", I asked for in the week, she gave me 1 date &... (read more)

i do understand about you being angry about the service but hargate would only take you out on the roads if they knew you could control the horses. You need to be reasonable about this as you wouldn't like it if they took you on a hack and the horse suddenly spooked and you did not know how to calm your horse. Hargate doesn't have the kindest service, i agree. The riding school hours only up to 5 on weekends and 7 on weekdays and so are very busy.

Any riding school has to take precautions which may seem extreme to the untutored eye. Riding is a risk sport - in fact there are more people killed in horse-related accidents than in any other sport, including mountain climbing, motor racing and diving. Personally, I have refused to ride at stables where I was not known and where they declined to do an initial assessment of my ability. I have been riding for 50-odd years but I would not expect a stranger to take my word for my ability and skills.
As regards fitting you in for a hack or a lesson, you should bear in mind that the school has a responsibility to their other clients who ride and have lessons there. If you were a loyal, regular client you wouldn''t be pleased if you were "bounced" out of your slot to fit in a new customer

I decided to take a lesson at Hargate Hill; the school is used by Ridge Danyers College for their practical work which is what attracted me. The school looked really big and very clean. The horses all look happy and healthy.
The lesson I had was nothing what I expected! I am used to being taught: e.g. the teacher explains something and you do it, but this lesson wasn't like that, you basically make up what you want to do, the only rule is that you have to pass left hand to left hand and...

You are right about the instructors being a little confusing but if you talk to them after the lesson and tell them that you didn't understand what they where saying then they should explain it all to you!

In the main this is a fair review. I've kept my horse at Hargate Hill for 13 years and hopefully he's there for life. He's happy and that keeps me happy. Fees are reasonable and the yard compares favourably with places charging similar rates for fewer facilities. The staff are experienced and reliable and one can safely leave one's horse in their care when unable to be there oneself. There is winter turnout - admittedly muddy but one can't have everything and many yards in the area have no winter turnout at all. Stables are solidly built and warm and dry and there is secure storage available. Security is one of the most important aspects for me - the owners and some staff live on site and there is CCTV coverage.
