“kirby, what a flaming nightmare!!!”

Written on: 31/03/2012 by dudey (1 review written)

Kirbys are very good if you're just using it to hoover but to use any attatchments or shampoo system then thats when the niightmare begins. Turn the dial to green should be belt on but what do you do when belt on is red, a total nightmare, so my review is to just hoover with it. Kirby's are very complicated and they should re-design so the main head should not come off to just simply use the hose. I tried the shampoo system which was easy but the belt would not go on in the green position.... (read more)

Written on: 08/05/2011

I brought my kirby a number of years ago, it cost about £1500. I have it serviced every year which costs £75 and the engineer charges me £25 for a pack of bags.
I never use the extra attachments, they're too complicated!!
I am not having it serviced again, when it packs up, I will go and buy a new hoover, Not a kirby!!
They are heavy, arkward and quite frankly a waste of money.
I was pressured into buying it from the salesman. I wish I had told him to f*** off!!! (read more)

The sales pitch is fantastic and the machine is great, but after sales and annual sevicing is very very poor. The service centres are absolutely useless from those on the phone and the reps calling give empty promises. I sent my machine in working order for the yearly service and it was returned in a non working condition! Safer not to service or maybe buying a cheap machine from the oocal store and then when it does not work you just dispose of it and buy a new one. I could probably do... (read more)

RJB Distribution Ltd & Kirby cleaners - my warning

Okay, so I thought I'd post this review of the 'services' of RJB Distribution to try and stop other people losing hours of their time just like I have...

I was at home one day when a man from RJB knocked at my door. He told me he was representing a company that was new to the area and, in return for my phone number, he would enter me into a free prize draw to win a car. There was no selling involved or anything, they were just doing it... (read more)

October 2010 UK, Cheshire. Had a chap knock on the door with a 'free entry' card to a competition to win a Nissan car or a daily prize of a free carpet clean - the chap told me it would be him who cleans the carpet if I win. Lo and behold a few days later a lady rings up to say I've won the daily prize. I double check there was no price to pay or terms + conditions. So this same chap who'd dropped off the card the other day turns up for what I was promised would be 40 mins to clean the... (read more)

I've owned a Kirby for some time. I didn't buy it new but instead faulty of ebay for about £20 which I collected with a ton of accessories. I bought a replacement mains cable to sort out the fault (intermittant working), a new bulb and some bags. Probably its cost me £30 in total.

There is no doubting the fantastic build quality and use of high quality materials and as a carpet cleaner it is the best of the best but for sheer suction from its tubes it is weaker than many cheaper products.... (read more)

Written on: 14/09/2010

I underwent the hardsell from a Kirby rep way back in the mid 80s and didn't succump primarily because of the cost. My concern is that my young son has now been roped into going for interview after interview about 40miles away each time, and has now been told he would be an ideal candidate to sell the vacuum cleaner. I've never owned one of these, but sold them for 3 years. If I had the finances to buy one, I would. I do not sell them now, but am happy to say that I fully believe in them and I know them inside out.

The only downside to them is that when using them as a hand held cleaner, for such things as beds, sofas and stairs, they are not lightweight. As an upright, they are very light, because of the excellent tech-drive system.

Do you look at your carpet with a microscope? You almost certainly shouldn't do it.

I used to buy a new vacuum cleaner every time one broke (average every 1-2 years). We had just had one for a few months, an 1800W Electrolux cylinder vac, when my wife called me to say I would have to be home prompt from work: some guy was coming round to clean the carpets for free. I was very unsure about spending £900 on a vacuum, however 15 years later and with just a couple of spare parts this kirby g5 is brilliant value for money. it is heavy to carry up stairs but that is just because it is so well built

There are so many features and accessories that it is hard to find any faults with the whole package. Kirby support is also exceptional, the team we deal with are quick, attentive and provide service that equals the build quality of the vacuum. (read more)

Spot on. Negotiate the price down to around £1000.00 (you can do it). These machines are in a class of their own for getting dirt out of carpets, and they really should last you 10, 20, 30, maybe longer, years.
What's the point buying a flashy Dyson, with all it's techno gimmicks. They will NEVER clean a carpet like a Kirby

Exceptionally well made vacuum cleaner. Kirby G5 / 6 / 7 is very power and an excellent cleaning too. Many configurations of accessories give a wide range of uses when it comes to cleaning. You will only ever buy one Kirby so initial costs becomes negligible in a very short space of time. Parts are readily available either from Kirby or on the internet. Rolls Royce of vacuums. Bit noisier than usual vacuum but it isn't made of plastic/cheap and nasty which more than makes up for the noise. (read more)

I totally agree with your comments about the company! I have just found out that my mother, aged 77, bought a Kirby for £1490, plus they took away her perfectly working Dyson "as a deposit". Thankfully the cheque she paid had not been cashed so I have cancelled it and left a message with the phone no on her invoice (? the rep) that the machine will be returned. She lives alone and is not that mobile - how could the saleswoman believed that this was in any way a suitable product? Ready to go into battle on this, as I, too, am absolutely disgusted.

Agree entirely, and it's not just selling like this to the elderly. About 10 years ago we were pushed by the sales rep into buying one of these at £1300 plus. I was 34 then, and I couldn't get this guy to accept No! We signed on the dotted line, cleaned the house from top to bottom, and then cancelled our contract - thank God for a 14 day cooling off period. It is a fantastic product which is why I'm now looking around eBay for one, but I won't be buying direct from Kirby that's for sure

Written on: 11/10/2008

I have tried many different vacuum cleaners over the years and without doubt the Kirby is the best. Unfortunately it is not particularly easy to use and consequently not really suitable for the very old. Being so well made makes it rather expensive to manufacture and therefore if sold in shop, it would look too expensive compare to the plastic junk produced by other makes. Therefore the only sales option is to sell door to door. This in itself inflates the price so it is expensive. However, there are plenty of second hand ones on the market and in cleaning terms the G4 is as good as the latest model.

Two men came and stayed for over 3 hours demonstrating the Kirby cleaner. Eventually she signed up for one, the guy told her it was £1900, but instantly knocked £1000 off the price, then told her he'd take her very old Vax of her ( for £200) and offered her £800 for the kirby (not a new one i must add, the demo model). What a scam, don't fall for it like she did. I later found out from a friend who owns an electrical spares business that theses machines retail for £399, and he also stated that he has 3 in his workshop that need mending but the owners can't afford the cost of the parts. If these machines are so fabulous like the salesmen claim her wouldn't have 3 broken down hoovers, would he???? DO NOT FALL FOR IT!!!!!!!!!!

You could buy three Hoovers for the same price and use them in sequence and get better value for money. Avoid. Nasty APR deals too.

...Kirby is great. No doubt about it. There wasn't much going on in 1997 after my Post Graduate degrees, and I ventured into selling the wonderful machine.
Unfortunately I'm not famed for "real hard" salesmanship which is what selling kirby is all about. And it should not be as the machine sells itself. However, to push the sales as a result of the ultra supra high cost here in the UK real salesmen are needed. If you can afford one go for a Kirby.

I also agree with above reviews! I am the proud owner of a Kirby G6. I have never sold them, but probably could, secondary to my high review of this product. I am a nurse, and have pets in my home...I needed a Kirby! The power, suction and total cleaning ability I have with the G6, far surpasses any other vaccuum I have owned in the past...including an Oreck.
