I had a terrible experience renting through Auto Europe in Rome this summer.
We have a holiday home there and needed to rent for an extended period. We were informed (over the phone) when we booked the car that there would be no extra charge for an addtional driver; however, this turned out not to be the case as the small print stated otherwise and we were forced to pay.

When I returned the car the rep. looked it over and informed me that it was damaged and that we would be charged for this. The damage consisted of a tiny (1 inch) surface scratch on the bumper which could have easily been polished out. When I suggested this a bucket of muddy water and a dirty rag were produced and I was asked to clean it myself. Of course this didn't work as a scratch remover cleaning product was required. We have just received a letter informing us that our credit card has been charged 300 Euros for this damage. The fact that the rep. magically produced this bucket from behind the counter and went through a memorised speech about the benefits of taking out the extra insurance cover are clear indicators that this rental company has a practice of making sure they find 'damage' on cars which do not have extra cover in order to boost their profits.
Please avoid using this rental company. They will find a way to make sure you pay them the same as their more expensive competitors.

We ordered and paid for an Intermediate car for 4 days with Auto Europe. When we arrived at Belfast airport we had to use the Budget desk where we were immediately told that they were going to downgrade us as they had no intermediate cars. We asked if there was a refund and after they phoned Auto-Europe we were told we would have sort this when we returned home. We have made several phone calls emails and written letters and still not rec'd a refund. The car we were given was a Peugot 308 w ...

Just returned from a week in Spain having used AutoEurop and would never use them again.
They had no office at the airport so we had to ring to try and find where the rep was located and eventually found her standing between two pillars next to a Coca-cola machine. She then told us that we were unable to have the car that we'd ordered (a 2 door Citroen or similar) as clients had extended the time in which they wanted their hire cars. Instead we were given a large, noisy van that was for 5/6 ...

Don't be fooled by Auto Europe internet ads with the great call in special price. I have rented numerous cars in the UK from the US and this is the worst experience ever. I was promised that the price that I was quoted would be all that I would pay - including airport pick up and an extra driver - only to arrive at Europcar pick up desk and be told there would be extra charges - a total of almost $200 extra even though the voucher stated "balance due 00.00".
If this was not bad enough, a few d ...

Wanted to make the best of the sunshine in Italy and rented a convertible through Auto Europe. They asked for a few days to confirm availability of a convertible and came back confirming a booking with Europcar.

Funnily enough, upon my arrival in Bari, I was told by Europcar that they don't have any convertibles available in Bari, never have had and probably never will have. Had to take the only car available but was charged the full amount (prepaid).

Now not sure who lied to whom here (proble ...

Never rent with autoeurope in your life ..
I paid the voucher to rent a car with AutoEurope. The, I pick up the car at Dollar Los Angeles.
They took my credit card, according to them, to place a hold on it, in case we do not return the car. Then, they try to convince you to upgrade your car and rent a GPS. We decline everything.
When we returned the car and came back home, I noticed we have been charge twice for the same rental car. Once from Auto Europe and once from Dollar. I contact auto euro ...

You think you are paying up-front for the rental of a car that looks good value, but you are only pay for a very expensive booking fee. Don't even think about it. Go direct to the car company, it will cost more to start with, but will be better value in the end. We got a different car than ordered from Auto Europe and it cost us more than twice the original booking fee.

After two or three hiring experiences, it is clear that Auto-Europe achieve keen prices by sub-contracting end-of-life cars from hire operators.

The cars are sometimes a bit tatty, but I have not yet had one that was undrivable. The hire contract is based on the rental company's usual terms, which should, of course, be checked carefully.

On balance, I will continue to use Auto-Europe until I hit a problem that they don't seem willing to resolve for me.

Arrived at airport desk to find 2 or 3 staff and a queue that stretched 75 metres (local company used are GoldCar). No movement in 35 minutes and clear that it would be several hours before we got a car. Interestingly the maximum queue at any other desk was 3 people. In the end we gave up, sacrificed 3 days rental and got a super service from Europcar. On the phone AE don't seem interested in feedback- hope we get the refund for half the week.

Had been told by a travel agent that auto europe car hire was a good company to do business with, however I should have read reviews before I made the final plans. Personnel were very pleasant & handled the booking of the car w/no complaints. Always emailed back immediately to answer any concerns. At CDG airport, it was quite different. We were given paperwork to sign, keys to the car, asked for directions but the staff member just chuckled and said we could figure out the GPS system provide ...

Auto Europe is just an agent, they are not actually the hire company. I was given an online voucher for GoldCar. The deal I got appeared to be the least expensive (although still quite dear as it was a bit last minute). When I got to the airport, I found that you had to pay extra for a whole tank of petrol and also extra for insurance to cover the windows, undercarriage and tyres. I ended up having to pay a whopping 100 euros extra. Not a happy bunny!

This is shocking!!! Please beware of auto europe car hire. I wish I read this review before my friend and us decided to go with renting a car for a week. DON'T BE FOOLED BY THE PRICES, THERE ARE A LOT OF HIDDEN ZOMBIES in this business model of theirs.

After returning from our trip, there was a bill on our credit card for an extra day of rental. Which is totally ludicrous as if indeed we returned the car late, we would have missed our flight back to London. And when we brought up this case with ...

The car was quite good value online with Auto Europe but when I reached the airport the excess for any damage whether my fault or not was a staggering 1800 euros. To avoid this I was told it would cost 105 euros extra which I agreed to. The actual cost when I checked my statement was 210 which I now see is what was on the document but I stupidly trusted the car hire assisant when he said 105 and didn't double check the VERY confusing documents they gave me. It's the most expensive car I've ever ...

Auto europe quotes you a price and takes a deposit. That price DOES NOT INCLUDE all charges for the rental. YOU WILL PAY MORE.

I suggest renting directly from the company. Even if you pay more, you will know what you are paying!

dreadful. the Auto Europe Car Hire rep on collection was hostile and not helpful. it stated that there were no extras to pay when collecting the car. there was £75 non refundable plus £80 for additional insurance demanded.
dreadful company. had a 15 minute walk in a deserted underground to collect the car. then the car had damage to it - 15 walk back to report it. dreadful company. they are a company who then sell off your booking to anyone!!!!! be warned!!!!!!!!!!!!

Was offered an upgrade at the Hertz desk and was ultimately charged approx 300 euros more than quoted. Sent detailed e mail of events to Autoeurope customer sevices, no reply, reminded them and asked for reply and still no reply over a month later. The car, an S class was fine but at nearly 900 euros for 7 days was not much of a special offer.
I would like to have been told at the desk that the special offer was not on top of the price I had already paid for the car I had initially booked.

Generally a disappointing experience with Auto-Europe. After booking on their website we received no confirmation email letting us know which car hire company we were to deal with in Faro. Avis kindly phoned the company for us and told us it was Guerin. As we had no physical voucher (still no email after arriving in Faro) we had to phone Auto-Europe to get them to fax the voucher to Guerin. The whole process took about 2 hours.

The car was good and clean though. If only Guerin & Auto-Europe wou ...

We booked a small car with Auto Europe from Faro for 9 days. we picked the car up from Guerin rentals, a much better car than we ordered and in good condition. The people were very helpful, we returned the car back a bit later than we should have, but no problems. We would not hesitate to use them again.
