We have made an online booking through rentals.com for a period of six days for a car in Manchester, UK. The only thing that was really disappointing was the customer service. The gentleman who handed over the car to us acted unprofessionally, maybe because we were foreigners? Initially he triad to provide us NOT with the car we have booked but with a smaller one. Eventually he changed his mind and agreed to give us the car that has been booked and was actually available and awaiting for us.... (read more)

Beware of the following using Sixt at Copenhagen Airport 1- Check your car very carefully for minor damages on delivery, especially if you get an upgrade, and have not taken all insurances (yes, they do also include glass and tyre insurance separately!) 2- Ask to see the whole form when asked to sign on a blank iPad page on return by clearance person, as you later will find out you have signed and agreed to xtra-charges and damages. 3- Beware of upgrades, especialy when seeing car type... A friend and I both booked identical cars through carrentals.com and were both given cars in Italy from Sixt. The cars were driven to the resort, parked for 7 days and driven back to the hotel in pristine condition. When the cars were returned there was no one at Sixt to book them in. We went to the office, handed the keys in and when we asked about someone to check the condition, we were told that the cars were fine and no need to worry. Four weeks later, both my friend and I receive... (read more)

I rented a Citroen DS4 in Edinburgh and made 800 miles driving around beautiful Scotland. Everything perfect until a tyre broke in the Highlands. Because of the remoteness of the location Sixt couldn't help me directly, and the only solution was to get it fixed at a garage, pay for it myself (287GBP), and then wait for Sixt to pay me back. Good advice ! BEWARE RENTING FROM SIXT! I Rented from them last September at Munich airport, Germany. They told me, AMEX gold card insurance would not be accepted, unless I had a hard copy of the policy with me. They sold me their "full coverage" insurance at double the rental rate. They handed me keys to a "ford focus"! Fine car. The day before my return flight to NY, I refueled the car with gasoline ! It started to sputter so I stopped. BIG SURPRISE, it was a diesel, no label on the fuel cap, no description on the contract, no warning from the counter clerk. I Had no clue focus came with a diesel engine, as they are unobtainable in the US! At 7 pm their offices were closed. So, I called the "pannenhilfe" (accident help) number in the glove box. I was told by a very rude woman that I was stupid and I'm on my own getting another car back to Munich early the next morning. Upon my return to NY, I immediately called my credit card, gave them all the info, and filed a claim with them.
NOW THE BEST; After several emails, reports and calls back and forth from the US, SIXT told me, I'm 100% responsible for all repair, towing and rental loss expenses, due to my negligence. I should have read the owners manual and registration papers in the glove box. The total was almost 1000 Euro (seems to be their favorite number) I should add that my credit card carrier, American Express, was fabulous in dealing with them, on my behalf.
NO ACCEPTANCE OF ANY LIABILITY ON THEIR PART!
Another trick; online adds. Summer of 2011, We reserved their "special", a BMW 1 in Copenhagen for 2 weeks! The puzzled clerk looked at me and said "we don't have that car in our Danish fleet, but we can give you a Toyota." The old "bait and switch" routine. All the other companies are better than them !

Dear Ed,
I think I can see the misunderstanding. The rentalcars.com website refers to several categories as "mini" This is a category description, not a vehicle model description.
The vehicle offered was a model "Mini" which does have 5 seats. This is actually a significant upgrade on the vehicle booked and affords no less room than a Polo. I am sorry, but the branch did offer a vehicle that was within the group booked.
Please let me know if I can offer any further help.
Best regards, Gary

You should have asked yourself why they were offering an Astra at that rental station if it was not powerful enough nor fit for purpose for use on the island. These are car rental companies whose agents are always looking for a quick $. You must do your homework before booking and certainly before collecting your rental vehicle. Hopefully next time you'll be aware of these tricks of the trade?
