We have hired via Europcar several times while visiting France, the latest being from Narbonne Railway Station where we were given an upgraded car. Over this time - about 7 years - we have not experienced any problems and found the quality of service and quality of cars to be very good. At Narbonne we turned up to drop the car off during the dreaded French lunchtime - 12.00 to 1400! There was a member of staff returning with her baguette but she still checked the vehicle and took our keys.....now there's duty for you!!!

I usually use Europcar for one way airport rentals from Derby to Heathrow and the return journey after our vacation. I don't usually have a problem as I normally read the fine print careful before signing anything. On this rental I prepaid for a 7 seater or similar for both legs of the journey at a base price of 90 GBP for each leg. I paid a further premium for an additional driver and to reduce the 1000 GBP excess to zero. The vehicle supplied was a 8 seater Fiat Skudo which was ideal for 5 people and luggage. On the return leg the employee at Heathrow announced he was letting me have a vehicle usually hired for 160 GBP for the price of 90 GBP. The vehicle was a Fiat Skudo, the exact type of vehicle hired on the outbound leg and the price I had already paid for the return leg. The vehicle was delivered but there was a problem with up-righting the seats after all the luggage was loaded and another Fiat Skudo was ordered. The employee gave me the agreement to sign saying it was for the replacement vehicle so I signed without properly viewing the agreement. At no time was the word upgrade mentioned so imagine my surprise when my credit card statement showed an additional 143 , GBP which included 90 GBP ex vat for a vehicle upgrade. The long and short is after first refusing a refund, Customer Services repaid the "upgrade" fee but not the Roadside Assistance or Personal Accident Insurance which I had inadvertently signed for as well. Just be on your wits especially after returning on a long haul flight and still disorientated.

AFTER READING ALL THE NEGATIVE REVIEWS ON RENTING CARS IN LOS CABOS I WAS VERY HESITANT TO DO SO. I WENT AHEAD AND RENTED WITH EUROPCAR RENTAL AND HAD MOSTLY A PLEASANT EXPERIENCE.I WAS GEARED UP TO DO BATTLE BUT THE ONLY EXTRA INSURANCE THAT WE WERE FORCED TO BUY WAS THE CDW. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A LETTER WITH YOU FROM THE CREDIT CARD COMPANY CONFIRMING THAT THEY WILL COVER THIS OTHERWISE YOU MUST PAY. WE HAD TAKEN THE CREDIT CARD BROCHURE WITH US SHOWING THAT THIS COVERAGE WAS INCLUDED BUT THIS WAS NOT ENOUGH.STILL WE PAYED A TOTAL OF $151.00 FOR A 5 SEATER CAR FOR 5 DAYS. THIS WAS STILL FAR CHEAPER THAN ANY OTHER MODE OF TRANSPORTATION THAT WAS OFFERED. DRIVING WAS FAIRLY EASY AND WE FOUND THAT MOST DRIVERS WERE VERY COURTEOUS. IT WAS LOVELY TO HAVE THE FLEXIBILITY OF HAVING OUR OWN VEHICLE.

I was renting one way in UK, starting at Edinburgh airport and ending in Manchester airport. When i booked it online and got voucher that sayd Alamo/Europcar i read reviews and was a bit scared. But for me everything went well, they did offer me a bigger car when i arrived and I excepted it ( so its my own fault that i payed them a bit more :)) I did take 0 excess insurance because it was my first time driving "wrong side". We got a almost new Astra, that had only 300 miles and we did drive like 2000 with that. Returned car, there was someone in the desk but he didnt want to see car just asked to leave the keys. That was only negative point for me, because i was afraid that they say later that something wrong. But everything has been ok so far. Rented on april an now almost july :)

Every time I've rented through them I have had no trouble and service is good I have even used them in Dubai and they were the same which is good (to maintain a standard across the board)... I can't complain

Rented car from Alicante airport last summer. Staff was friendly. Car had good few scratches but mechanically was perfect. On return I was late half an hour - no problem. So I would use Europcar again. Andrew

I have used Europcar Gatwick the last 2 times I returned to the UK and the service both times was excellent. Picking up the vehicle is quick and easy and returning it was too. I usually dread returning the car - thinking that they will try to pick out minor pre-existing marks on the car and blame me but there was none of that on either occasion. The only downside is that I always have to use a 3rd party (first time holidayautos.com and the second time rentalcars.com) to get the best prices. I had booked 2 cars with rentalcars.om on my last trip and ended up with Hertz for the 2nd car. I should be able to get the best price from Europcar directly. Service will depend upon location - which is why some of the reviews here are so conflicting but all I know is that the Gatwick Airport branch was a pleasure to use.

was wary about booking with Europcar as I had read so many bad reviews.thankfully we had no problems at all .collected the vw golf at gat wick and returned it on time with no problems.the only difficulty we had was locating the actual car rental parking lot .clearer signage at gat wick would be the only recommendation I would have.

Hired a car from Alicante airport to be dropped off 10 days later at Malaga airport. Booked on the telephone after getting a quote on the website. We got a very good price, cheaper than the other big names. Collecting the car at Alicante was quick and simple. We were offered extra insurance which was quite expensive but we said we didnt want this, the customer service person was fine with this and wasn't at all pushy about it. We ended up with a VW Golf which wasnt what we'd originally booked but was of a similiar size. The car itself was very nice, quite new and was in very good condition. There were a few small dents and scrapes on the car so we took photos of them just in case they were questioned when we returned the car. However, handing the car in at Malaga airport was really quick and easy. The dents had been marked on the car's documentation (in Spanish so we didnt realise!) and handing the car back only took about 5 minutes. I was a bit worried about booking with Europcar after reading some of the reviews on this site but I have to say I was pleasantly surprised and would recommend Europcar.

We booked a VW Polo from Girona for a 10-day hire at €30 per day. Rates were competitive with other rental compsnies. Check in was easy (there's a desk facing into baggage reclaim), the lady who served us was friendly and helpful, there was no queue and no hidden extras, and there was no attempt to sell us unwanted insurance etc. The car had only 1,000km on the clock and was in good condition. We had no problems throughout the hire, and the return was straightforward. Our only niggle was the difficulty of getting confirmation from Europcar that our booking had been accepted - no email & nothing on the 'your booking' area of their website. Everything else worked well - good service & OK on VFM.

I'd be really really worried about Europcar if I had read these reviews first before hiring but I got to say apart from the slow check-in service (which included the customary extra insurance pitch that most companies do) we have never had a problem with Europcar on the half dozen occasions we hired their cars (mainly Ibiza). Made sure I did a proper inspection and took pics before and after rental and parked right next to the office when returned. We took the extra insurance cover a few times and got a free (significant) upgrade each time!
On one occasion the car wouldn't start so they sent out a recovery vehicle, arrived within an hour (no charge) and turned out it was my fault (not depressing the clutch when starting - did it without thinking before and hadn't realised) I felt a right twit!
Off to Ibiza again soon so hopefully I'll still be a bit luckier than some of their other customers.

I had an issue about being charged for fuel, although the vehicle was returned full. The company has now promised to refund the £30 they erroneously charged me, and the matter is resolved. I would be careful with any vehicle rental to return the vehicle full, and maybe check with the rental desk that this is satisfactory. Maybe even take a photo of the fuel gauge for future reference. Other than this, I have always been very satisfied with Europcar, and will use them again.

Phoned up for prices and managed to get a great deal on a Fiat Grande Punto 5dr on a months hire, although I had the full intention to haggle for an upgrade. Pre-paid on the phone and got it even cheaper. Arrived to collect the vehicle, and was upgraded automatically as they didn't have much stock. Got a Vauxhall Astra 1.9 SRI in Black which looked great, albeit it was a bit older than the other cars in there and had done 17000 miles. Few scratches and scuffs, all pre-noted and checked off during the inspection. Car was fine, service was good. Return was trouble-free. Although I did want to book it for another month, the branch couldnt do the same rate I managed to get from their UK reservation line and so I ended up renting the next car from Enterprise due to price. I have another 2 bookings lined up with Europcar in the next few weeks.

Our flight was delayed over 7 hours, bank holiday pick up from durham teeside, spoke to Europcars call centre and branch, excellent customer service. Branch stayed open late to accomodate late arrival after 10 pm. could you ask for more?
Have used Europcar before would recommend to anyone, staff friendly. Professional and eager to go the extra mile to achieve a positive result.
Thank you!

I am sorry to see the negative comments left by other customers. This has not been my experience and I hope that the good experience I had with Europcar marks a turnaround for them.
I booked a 1.4 Megane with Europcar Dublin Airport. I found the check out speedy. I inspected the car before taking it and found two minor dents. There was no problem getting this signed for. The original deal was take away full and return empty. But after three days I had not driven very much, so I made a phone call and they agreed I could refill locally and get the tank of fuel cost (around 86 euros) back. I got through to the office on the phone fairly quickly. When I asked if I could have a lazy day and return the car a little late, they offered me an extra hour and a half at no charge.
On return I inspected the car with the reurn staff and it was done quickly and signed for without a hitch. I went to the desk and despite being busy, the girls arranged a refund for the fuel on the spot.
I do not doubt other customers have had problems. But based on my experience, I would consider using Eurpocar again.

Europcar is good value for money. We hired their cheapest car with air conditioning (Tazz) and got excellent petrol mileage, considering we put over 2000k on the car in two weeks of touring, and had sufficient space for two plus luggage comfortably, as well as occasional passengers.
Excellent early morning airport drop off arrangements included and inspection attendants in designated parking bays.

Been using corporate contract rates for a year with Europcar. Brilliant service, great rates and helpful people. 24 hour breakdown that came in very handy.
