Good Points: Enjoyable, gripping, amusing and a great addition to the splatterpunk genre.
Bad Points: Well, it's no literary masterpiece is it!
General comments: Shaun Hutson, Slugs - Synopsis:
"One female slug can lay one and a half million eggs a year - a fact which holds terrifying consequences for the people of Merton. As the town basks in the summer heat, a new breed of slug is growing and multiplying. In the waist-high grass, in the dank, dark cellars they are acquiring new tastes, new cravings. For blood. For flesh".
First published way back in 1982, this was one of Hutson's very early offerings to the splatterpunk genre. It has become one of his most well-known novels and was even made into a film in 1987. The plot is simple and classic - giant slugs with a taste for human flesh go on a rampage. The usual sprinkling of cliched characters with a gore-packed storyline that races through from start to finish. The simplicity is the key to the novel, and Hutson has produced a great one here. It is enjoyable and reasonably well-written for our Hutson. The characters never get too annoying, nor does the storyline get too laughable (honestly!!!). You'll find it gripping and addictive.
I recommend this to anyone who is interested in Hutson's work. It is a great introduction to his stuff.
