I have a 5 seat Scenic dynamiq 1.5 diesel 80 bhp 2004. All round superb little car. Three small children & it gets used & abused. I just want to make folks aware that if your electric windows fail Renault will repair/replace mechanisms or some of the mechanicals under warranty if the car is under 7 years old and under 100,000 miles. Only found out by accident as mine was playing up & nearside one fell into door cavity! Rang Renault & they confirmed this but i must say its not well publicised... (read more)

Have got a 2004 54 plate 80bhp diesel dynamique, owned for 4 yrs soon. Been a fab car, economy is outstanding around 630+miles per tank variety of driving/roads etc...Good spec, got three kids all small, plenty of space, big boot too, 5 full seats. Underpowered but adequate & keeps up on m/way. Interior gets battered by my kids but scrubs up well, only gets cleaned inside about every 6 weeks but looks good. Dynamique have the dark interior so is best colour for family. Electrics are weak... (read more)

I think this is a well though out car with good storage and easy to use controls etc. However, we had to replace entire electric dash as it packed in - cost £400. On line investigations suggests that this is common. Bit of a plodder performance wise. Evenb though diesel and small 1.5l engine not that economical re mpg.
On plus side converts to a small van when seats come out. We used it this way countless times.
Not bad overall - great features but performance not brilliant and electrical...

Excellent all round car. Plenty of room for an average family. Comfortable and fairly quiet. I have the 1.5 Dynamique (100 bhp) which is very economical - very handy with current fuel prices - and good equipment spec.
I would recommend this car to anyone.

As a second vehicle for a means to transport a young family the Renault Scenic has no competition. What Renault does the others just copy. The 1.6 petrol is a good engine but if you want economy go for the 1.5DCI unit, preferebly in the 100BHP form. The 1.9DCI is ok if you want a bit more go but it is noisy and not very economical. Ideally aim for the higher spec models such as the Dynamique or the Privilage which offer features such as climate control, fully adjustable seats, cruize control... (read more)

I had my 80 hp 1.5 dci scenic in Nov 2006. Got 3 children under 5 so needed something to fit all of us in and it's been a superb motor. Mines the 5 seat dynamique and its very well equiped. Rear blinds a bit flimsy but with a child pulling at them they will break however well made.
Only two breakdowns since ownership that being a dead battery and the other a broken earth strap but other than that which i class as wear and tear it's been great with massive fuel economy 55+ mpg all day long...

I have a 2003 Renault Megane Scenic 1.5 dCi Authentique. The Authentique trim level is so basic. One should aim for Dynamique with a Sunroof. I bought it second hand at 80k miles. Ride comfort is good even with 17 inch tyres. Very spacious at the back, so kids / other family members will have no problem. High driving position is good and the 1.5 (80 HP) unit is more than enough for the job in and around the city. On the highway it is responsive and a good cruiser too. Build quality is... (read more)

Owned a 1.5 Scenic DCI for three years now, the overall feeling is similar to driving a jelly, flimsy construction, poor build quality, atrocious after sales service from Renault (waited 8 months for the second key), window regulators that allow the windows to drop, faulty dash display, fuel gauge that is only an estimate, wipers that only clean half of the screen (and cost 230 for a wiper arm) terrible warranty coverage, the cost of parts is nothing short of theft. Anyone that considers... (read more)

I've had a 1.5 deisel grand scenic for 7 months now, i went for a service and found out i need a cam belt at 72000 miles, being told when its being done its advisory to change the water pump too and some other belt/chain. alltogether nearly £600, plus 4 tyres at £120 each for mid range type and the clutch has started to slip, so in all very expensive to run, but i do a lot of miles on the motorway at 70 ish and it does return 50 mpg and its not too bad for a 1.5 (read more)

Good family car in principle, but just too flimsy, unreliable and costly to fix. Renault customer service is shocking too. Has to be reliability and cost to fix. Have had the air con go on it (cost to fix £300), engine mount ( £200), battery ( £150), new front wipers ( £60). All out of warranty surprise, surprise. There is uneven tyre wear on the back tyres, so they need replacing every 10k or so at £160 a pair.
1.5 engine struggles on the motorway. Also interior plasticy and flimsy....

Good ride height ,comfortable seats, plenty of room for the family, large boot. 44 MPG Avg over the last 20,000 Miles. Some people may think that the 1.5 DCI lacks performance then they should buy a sports car. Having said that I over took a porch the other day. (read more)

The Renault Megane Scenic is very comfortable and economical - especially on long journies - we have driven from Scotland to France twice. Handbrake on the dashboard with automatic drive off is excellent (it has taken a long time for other manufacturers to introduce this). Also having 6 gears is a boon on motorway driving. Ample storage space and will take a wheelchair in upright position in the boot (one of the reasons we purchased a Scenic) and it is ideal for getting in and out of if you... (read more)

In my opinion, it would be wise to buy this car with the 1.5 diesel engine only if you rarely leave the city. Around town, it is easy to drive, but difficult to park due to the disappointing turning circle. But otherwise, this is generally a respectable family car. (read more)

like the diesel filler cap no need to remove at all this is a good car to rival any expensive German MPV.

It is what it is - a FAMILY MPV. Made for FAMILIES - it is practical and serviceable - a realistic car. Makes a great second hand purchase, we would have liked a higher spec one, maybe next time - we would certainly have another one.
Good value for money for those of us who are on a budget or do lots of miles. We recommend!!!

Fuel economy, I tested the Renault Megane Scenic over 10 fill ups using trip computer as well as my own calculations, new vehicle bought in September and test run form 3500 on the clock.
Would be very intersted to know of any one else experiencing the same.
Also beware tailgate does not open very high - if you are 5.9 + you will easily bang your head. Bottle holders found in old model no longer available.

Having lived with one of these Renault Megane Scenic 1.5 Diesel for 2 weeks (hire car) I can honestly say it has all the appeal of halitosis. The thick front pillars do all they can to obscure lateral vision, and rear-vision is equally dreadful. The 1.5 engine is, admittedly, frugal, but is also utterly gutless. Low-range torque is pitiful and the 5th gear doesn't even make sense as an overdrive. The seats do all they can to ensure your driving pleasure is enhanced with a really primo... (read more)

As far as the driving pleasure is concerned, the steering wheel, the radio and the aircond controls are much better desinged in Scenic then in Passat.

It is a shame that Groundsman has made mainly negative comments about the Scenic. I note it is a hire car. These are usually low-spec and poorly looked after. Did Groundsman want or need a people carrier? If not, then that is why he probably didn´t appreciate the very roomy and practical interior., the useful under-floor storage compartments, the individually reclining and sliding rear seats or the large, well-proportioned boot. He doesn’t say if he had the 80 bhp or 100 bhp version (now 86 bhp or 106 bhp with a 6-speed box). From my experience (14000 miles) the 100 bhp goes well for its size with a smooth progressive power delivery (unlike many turbo-diesels that pull strongly at low revs but tail off quickly as the revs rise). Best speed to date is 111 mph on the digital speedo and once run in it regularly topped 60 mpg and 5th gear gives good overtaking at motorway speeds (I even found myself looking for 6th at times). Uncomfortable seats? I totally disagree. In fact the most comfortable seats I have ever experienced on long journeys. By long-journeys I mean three return trips to Spain from the UK and four return trips London-Penzance. In fact I have driven 800 miles in a day without any problem followed by 600 miles the next day. Perhaps Groundsman didn´t find the lumbar support adjuster in his short acquaintance. I do agree about the steering wheel making the hands sore (after a few hundred miles) and recommend a version with a leather covered steering wheel (or wear driving gloves). The power assistance is speed-sensitive making it light for parking but weighting up at motorway speeds. No criticism there. I can’t even agree about the visibility problems. Thick windscreen pillars are the price of 5 Star NCAP crash safety, but the enormous windscreen and highish seating position give pretty good visibility all round. Quality of plastics seems mostly very good (except for moulding around the gear lever) with plenty of soft-touch surfaces. Seat covers and carpets a bit of a let down as quickly showed signs of wear (frizzing up). This is rapidly becoming a review I know but would I buy another? No. And for one reason only: shocking depreciation. I lost over £6000 in 14 months on a well-specc’d immaculate car in a popular colour and bought new (even after my original 15% discout). But that could make it a second-hand bargain

I too had a hire Scenic 1.6 petrol. OK I know it's a different one to that reviewed here but I want to say the original reviewers comment about the seat is complete rubbish. I have been recovering from a back injury (a hernia the size of your thumbnail in a disc at the bottom of my spine!) for 18 months - still not OK but can drive my own car for short trips as long as I use my booster cushion ;-) We hired the Scenic over Easter to take my parents on hols on the poor Greek mountain roads (over 500km) my cushion stayed home. It is the best seat I have ever sat on in a car since my back trouble started. It is my reference point now we are looking for a new car for all other seats - not sure we can afford a Scenic (plus Renault isn't renowned for reliability and we have always had Japanese cars) but I have yet to find a seat as good.

I would like to disagree with the above comments. I have been driving a 1.9 Renault Scenic for some months now and can vouch for it's reliability, it's comfortable seats and it's general handling. The only weak points are the window have worked themselves loose and the display panel bulbs have needed replacing. otherwise a great car.

From my own experience (14000 miles from new) of the 100 bhp version of the Grand Scenic 1.5 diesel (same car but longer wheelbase and 7 seats) I got an mpg in the low 50s while running in, improving to about 60 once run in. Keeping to 70 on long runs could give 65. Only once, racing for a ferry at 90-100 mph did the consumption drop to 40. Certainly the most economical car I have owned, including other diesels.
