Good Points: Good amount of shops and food stores.
Bad Points: Security is too slow, not very easy to find your way around and gets a bit too crowded.
General comments: In my opinion Birmingham is an airport slightly below average with more bad points than good points. I wouldn't bother recommending this airport to others because it is nothing special.

Travelling on January 19, 2008 with hand luggage and liquids in the prescribed plastic bag, my contact lens solution (about 50ml in a 100ml bottle, clearly labelled etc was "taken for testing". The "tester" used un-gloved un-washed hands to open up my sterile solution, and said it had tested "positive" and could not be taken in hand luggage - she had no idea what it tested positive for however. Birmingham International Airport as a structure is excellent. It's clean, compact and not over crowded. The terminals tend to be reasonably well maintained and there is a decent selection of the usual shops and eateries. Prices for food and the likes are about the same as at LGW, more expensive than other regional airports such as Coventry, Southampton or Bournemouth.
