Great sound from the Sony MDR-EX71SLB, nice fit don't ache after long time in your ears. Although they are expensive and I have got small shocks off the metal connector where to 2 cables join. Overall a good pair of headphones but cost is a bit too high.

The Sony MDR-EX71SLB headphones will sound only OK when you first use them. After a while (week or so of usage) they "burn in" and the sound quality greatly improves.

Usually I have no problems with Sony earphones. I regularly update them, once every couple of years but usually they are all fine. These earphones have an excellent sound and are also very comfy. unfortunately the plastic type coating over the wires started to fall apart. Then all you had was a bit of wire and not too long after this they broke completely. unfortunately, being untidy, id lost my receipt and the box, however, I should not be having to replace earphones for this reason so quickly anyway. For this reason I have put the value for money and overall rating down. These earphones shouldn't be bought when there are other options available. From what I have heard Sennheiser have a better name for earphones anyway. Read reviews on their in ear ones and for £18 I have just bought a pair from Amazon. not got them yet so cant say if they are good for sure but nobody complains about them falling apart. in fact quite the opposite, they are supposed to be very durable. DONT BUY THE SONY ONES!!

The sound quality and comfort on the Sony MDR-EX71SLB are good, but the rubber on the wires does not last. Mine have been covered in surgical tape because as it starts to go, it quickly deteriorates. I have been using mine in hot countries, but still Sony should ensure this does not happen anywhere, any time.

I got the white Sony MDR-EX71SLB to replace my ipod headphones, and I must say after experiencing the sound quality, I find it torture to listen to ipod headphones; these are just so superior.
However, after six months, the wire insulation turns mushy and falls off to reveal bare wire. Also, the white headphones generally get very dirty. Some of mine just fell apart (the actual headphone). I said I've had them for a year, but in actual fact I've had two pairs, each lasting six months before I had to replace them. Also on several occasions I've had to buy extra ear cups, because they often get pulled off, when taking them off for example.
Basically, if you don't mind spending 50 pounds per year for the rest of your life on headphones, these would be perfect. However, I'm looking for a different set that wont fall apart. A real shame though, because in the first few months these seemed like the ultimate ipod bud replacing headphones.

The Sony MDR-EX71SLB are great headphones - although the bass can be a bit overpowering at times - but they don't last. I haven't been hanging the MP3 player by the headphone cable, or anything like that. Most of their useful live has consisted of going from my ears to my jacket pocket, or from my ears to my DS. There is no logical reason why the plastic/rubber covering should have failed, other than poor build quality which (until now) I never associated with Sony (my Hifi, laptop, MP3 player are all Sony and I have both Playstations).

I've had two pairs of the Sony MDR-EX71SLB headphones in the last nine months, and at first I was totally in awe of the sound quality - the best in-ear phones I've ever heard. But, both pairs suddenly failed in one earpiece while listening - one after 3 months and the other after 6. The insulating sleeve on one pair also started to come off before they failed (not on the earpiece that failed, so it wasn't the cause of failure).
They are excellent earphones for sitting in one place but far too fragile for carrying around and using in the street. That's what I need, thus the low value for money and overall rating.

Sony MDR-EX71SLB: I've owned many kinds of headphones/earphones in the past. But more than a year ago I've bought a Sony MDR-EX71 and I experience it as the most comfortable I ever had and I will stick with these ones. I wear mine at the fitness centre while jogging. I have not encountered any discomfort and they do not fall out like some other brands.
I am using this with my iRiver MP3 Player and the sound quality is amazing. It's awesome that Sony is able to achieve a full range (6 Hz - 23000 Hz) and broad dynamic in such a tiny piece. The sound is just awesome, especially as the bass is astounding. The silicone ear buds do an extremely good job of dampening outside noise so that you do not have to turn the volume to maximum to block everything else out.
If you buy these headphones, don't be disappointed if they are not comfortable at first, it's just a matter of getting used to it. After that you almost won't feel them sitting in your ears.

I have just recently bought an iPod, these Sony MDR-EX71SLB headphones are a perfect replacement. I have previously owned a pair of these headphones, and they seemed to last much longer than any other headpones. Very light-weight with wonderful bass response. 5/5.

I was looking for a replacement for my iPod 'phones which I found uncomfortable and lacking in bass response. I found these on Ebay in white and had read good reviews of their performance elsewhere. The 'phones came bubble packed with a small hard case, a soft fabric pouch and three different ear plug sizes to tailor the fit exactly. The length of the two piece cord is adjustable allowing you to tailor the length to your music player. If you haven't experienced this type of 'phone, they actually fit in your ear like a cork in a bottle although perhaps not as tightly! - This seal holds them in place, reduces ambient noise and improves the frequency response of the 'phones. Once installed correctly in your 'shell likes', the phones proved a revelation over the iPods standard fare. Bass is present and tunefully deployed beefing up the sound of MP3s no end. The top is clean and bright but rarely sounds overly enthusiastic with well sampled MP3s. With the bass and treble doing a sterling job, the mid-range is perhaps the underachiever in the family occasionally sounding a little recessed. I use the phones on a 2 hour commute on 45 year old trains and they do a good job of shutting out some of the clanking and wheezing from the vintage rolling stock. They remain comfortable over that time and are the first phones I have ever owned that stay in my ears until I pull them out. Overall, these little phones are a brilliant product and Sony should be congratulated on the combination of sound, aesthetics and value they have achieved. Re-visiting familier albums becomes a genuine pleasure as fresh insight is delivered through these miniature marvels.
