I had a standard 4motion for 2 years after 3 gti's as I wanted the next best golf. I had a fantastic time and did some simple mods to make it better - better shocks, stainless exhaust and K&N air filter. These made a real difference. After a good year at work I fancied something even sillier and found a supercharged version, the original ABT demo car from 2000, so flew to scotland and bought it. This is properly daft, 290 bhp in a golk, lowered sports shocks, full milltek system, front... (read more)

As a female I was looking for a car y'know that looked good, had abit of poke to it but most of all was reliable, reasonable insurance & not to expensive to run. A little over 3 years ago I sold my BMW 1.8 compact which I loved & thought i'd upgrade to a slightly bigger engined BMW. I thought wrong! A friend of mine was selling this car and although i liked the look of it, i knew it was abit of a monster! Anyway to cut a long story short, i gave the machine a test drive on local roads and... I bought my golf 4motion from new, at a discount, when the mark5 came out. I thought the mark4 was better built. However, you buy this car for the engine and 4 wheel drive. I've had mine six years and still enjoy driving it. It pulls in any gear at any speed. I once accelerated from 100 to 120 and could have gone on if I had not run out of road. Also the four wheel drive means all the power gets used without wheel spin. You can floor it on a wet road and out run most cars and the tyres last... (read more)

I was looking for a car without all the body kits (growing up!!) but with a V6 as i love the sound of a real engine and not a 4pot turbo and this along with perm.4 wheel drive does the job well and is a good starting point for people who want a decent engine and vw build. Its 2.8 is smaller than the r32 but I picked mine up for around £3.5k! while the r32 is still selling over 8/9k and this isn't far behind in power and speed maybe 0.6 of a second. The...

I had the Mk 3 GTi16v for 6 yrs, until someone rear-ended it to a write-off. Spend ages looking for the thrills, and finally got the Mk4 V6 4motion. It is an absolute pleasure to drive. A real gentlemans car. Its discreet looks may not appeal to all. It relies on good petrol and quality tyres.

The Volkswagen Golf 4Motion just doesn't have the finesse of the pd150, or the outright brutality of the R32.
My superb GTI pd 150 was written off when a van driver fell asleep at the wheel. I looked long and hard for a replacement and my heart led me buy V6 4Motion. To be honest I found it to be a disappointment and traded it two months later for an R32 which turned out to be phenomenal.

The Volkswagen Golf 4Motion is the best car I ever had, it's nice looking forward to a long trip, safe and comfortable. We had road works outside our village for a year and there was mud all over, you could pull out and fly up the hill without a hint of wheel spin. Had a couple of problems with the coil packs, the dealer was fantastic, even after the warranty was out they replaced the packs at no cost and apologised for the car letting me down. Owned the Volkswagen Golf 4Motion for 10 months and 20000 miles. Definately the most fun car I've owned.
My friend bought a 318ci BMW at the same time and is gutted every time I take him in the 4motion (and it cost me 4 grand less :-)
Comes into its own with a bit of rain, handles great and no danger of overcooking it round bends.
The fuel consumption not great but manage to get 33mpg on motorway runs at 85ish.
Wolf in sheeps clothing, great for surprising 'quick' cars at the lights.

I have owned MK2 8v, MK3 16v and now the VW Golf 4Motion. Not as much of a drivers car as it is so smooth to drive but undoubtedly much quicker. The EVO ratings always annoy me because the handling may not be BMW rear wheel drive - but there are few of my mates that can stay with me through wet roundabouts and twisting B roads. I agree with most comments and have also experinced the same 'creaking' problem from the front suspension which the VW dealer has been unable to rectify
Written on: 16/09/2003
Allegedly there's a product recall on the suspension bushes - I've had two replaced and now they've gone again and VW are being difficult over the warranty - I'd be interested to here how many owners are having this problem and whether there is a product recall.

I have also got v6 4motion with creaking front suspension and have had one bush replaced some time ago and now the other has gone.
This means I have now driven so long with this problem I am unsure if the fault is causing the car to handle poorly.
What do you guys think, will it have much detrimental effect on the handling?

P.S also had to replace the lower arm bushes!
Written on: 07/01/2005
VW has a fix for the suspension noise which involves changing the front droplinks for a new design and fitting new bushes, however they don't seem to offer this until you've complained several times (I had to have the car repaired 3 times to get the new setup), the cause of the problem is the increased wight of the V6 engine which compresses the standard bushes. Since replacement I've had no problems.
Written on: 09/02/2008
I had the same problem with the front anti-roll bar bushes on my mk4 gti. Took a while to figure out what it was, a few garages couldn't identify it. When did figure it out put some power flex bushes on to replace them as they are designed to take larger strains as given by lowered cars. Where a little bit more money but if they last longer is well worth it. Picking up my 4 motion next week, can't wait after reading the reviews here.
Sully

Over 16,000kms, difficult to undo rear unless raining or on gravel, even with ESP off. The VW Golf 4Motion is a very well balanced car with luxurious interior and high equipment levels.
If you wanted this car to shame a WRX in outright performance, forget it. In high countries, the NA runs out of puff quite quickly, but the single most frustrating thing about this setup is finding second gear on a downshift.

I've just bought a VW Golf 4Motion, having driven a variety of other Mark iv Golfs. It's great fun to drive and very fast. Many of the reviews I've read refer to the handling as being a little 'stodgy'. I tried one with the factory sports suspension set-up and it was bone-jarringly hard. When I initially went to test drive the 4motion, I was told that all the demo cars were out, and I ended up test-driving (and buying) the 1.8 Turbo GTI. My dealer eventually obliged at the 10,000 service on my GTI and let me have a 4motion for the day. What a car! Infinitely more solid feel on the road than the GTi, and so much torque. I tried to get the car to lose traction on corners and failed.

Having just sold my beloved 1996 2.0GTI,I was looking around for another Golf.Test drove two new 1.8's and a 2.0 GTI plus the V6 Fourmotion on the same day, and by the end of that day bought the V6.The pullaway is simply unbelievable, the way the 4motion holds the road and simply purrs when you turn the key makes the whole driving experience sheer poetry!Without a doubt, one hell of a sleek performance car with more than enough attitude to silence, and then humiliate every baseball hat wearing git, that want's to rev up next to you at the lights!! Driving this car is slightly expensive but exhilaratingly addictive, and totally worth it!!

The VW Golf 4Motion is well built and looks great with it's low profile alloys. The 2.8 litre V6 engine is very willing with lots of torque even at low revs making gear changes unnecessary for overtaking. Not sure it really needs a 6 speed gearbox with all that torque. 4 wheel drive gives great traction and much better rocket launch acceleration. (read more)
