“Wish they still made this model”

Written on: 22/05/2012

Have owned a 05 ep3 type r since new. Without a doubt, the best car I have ever owned. The engine and gear change are super smooth. Handles excellent. It is quick below 6000rpm and absolutely flies above. Were going to change it when it reached 85000 miles, however couldn't bear to. It is now on 115000 miles and still does not miss a beat. With the exception of a sticky caliper, has not needed anything other than tires, disks etc (and the odd drop link!). Our other car is a brand new astra... (read more)

“52 Plate EP3 Type R”

Written on: 28/04/2012

Having spent 13 years driving 80's Vauxhalls mainly, this has proven to be a breath of fresh air! I've been a die hard GTE 16v fan for as long as I can remember. Bowled over by how good this Honda is from the factory. The engine is so smooth. Nearly but not quite on a par with a BMW straight 6 in my experiance. My only niggles are the headlights aren't great and the trim, especially the seat bolsters, aren't up to long term wear and tear. Other than that the car is an absolute dream. Just... (read more)

“Honda Civic Type R 2002”

Written on: 30/03/2012 by civicfreak

I bought this car when it was 2 years old and had 30k on the clock. As an oap I have had many cars but this one has been outstanding. It now has 105k on the clock and I still get nearly 40 mpg. OK I am not a boy racer! However it took a family of 5 to Nice, many camp sites in south of France, toured Scotland, wales and most of England. We live on the South coast over looking the sea so salt is no problem either. My old mate Len takes delivery of the car once a year, does goodness knows... (read more)

I've just bought one recently (march 2011) and before i bought it i was worried about some of the common symptoms such as chain failure, 2nd gear problems, valve clearances if they had been done or not etc. I put all of those behind me and i went and bought a 2002/52 plate one with 105k miles, fsh and most of all HPI CLEAR!! Honda Civic Type-R, EP3 2002.

I own a 2002 Civic Type R (EP3). The car ha a naturally aspirated 2 litre engine, with the I-Vtec system. It produces as near as damn it 200 bhp, with a 0-60 time of 6 and a half seconds. The car I bought is 8 years old, and has passed the 100k miles mark. When I considered this car, the mileage really did put me off but I test drove it anyway, and within minutes had agreed to buy the car. I love this car, as it's a lot of performace for the money - plus you get bullet-proof reliability. But it does lack in refinement, very basic interior, poor quality CD radio, lots of road noise. But that acceleration! I don't think this car is easy to drive fast on UK B-roads as it has a tendancy to oversteer - seems strange for a front mounted front wheel drive car - but it happens, its caught me out, and my tyres and pressures are fine. I bought my Red Civic Type-R from a Honda dealer for 9.5k with 44k on the clock. Even after 11 months I still feel special getting in the Honda Civic Type-R! Fair enough it can't touch my previous car for handling (Peugeot 106 GTI) but more than makes up for it in just about every other way. Yes, facelift models can be had for pretty reasonable prices now. They're available on 53 plates onwards. However, if your budget can't stretch, I wouldn't worry too much. As the term suggests, the CTR was merely facelifted, not overhauled, so apart from a few cosmetic changes (lights, front bumper, side mirrors, red trim on front seats) and a 0.2 second difference in the dash to 60, you're still looking at the same car. Air con is something to watch out for. It's not facelift specific, but it was a factory option and not everyone purchased it, so don't just assume the car you're looking at has it. You can live without a/c, but it's a nice extra, and will help the residuals when it comes time to sell as well. There are also some CTR's around with factory leather seats, if you like that sort of thing. Personally, I feel this doesn't fit with the image of the car, but it's down to personal opinion I guess.

If your budget can stretch, a facelift is definitely an option. I'd also consider 30th Anniversary models, which are pre-facelifts, but are special editions and come with factory tinted rear glass and red Recaro seats, among other things... yummy! Then there are the Championship white Japanese Domestic Models, which are even rarer, and have over 20 more horses than the UK model! Finally, there are also plenty of well modified examples around, with quality Japanese performance parts. Particularly interesting are the ones with Jackson Racing superchargers. :D

The Civic Type R was such an astonishing car for me to drive for the first time after being used to underpowered Ford Fiestas. You can stoop down to the level of racing those 'Boy Racers', but don't always expect to 'win'.
The CTR is a very nice car and I agree with all your points but remember it isn't the top of the 'hot hatch' tree anymore.
Plus, there are many 1.8T engined hatchbacks that will have been easily modified (remap) to over 200bhp, that will smoke a CTR on a straight. I know, I've seen it happen.
It is just such a shame the new Civic Type R is going to be lumbered with the same 200bhp, which puts it 30-50bhp down on the new Hot-Hatch competition (e.g. Focus ST, Astra VXR, Golf GTI & Leon Cupra).
I personally like the fact that all other Hot-Hatches are adopting the Turbo approach, allowing power and performance without the need to wind the engine up to 8500rpm. A good mixture of power and torque is what I feel the CTR lacks where others excel.

Scoobz,

I agree there are now quicker hot hatches on the market now, and the CTR does lack low down torque. But provided you know how to drive it, the CTR can still compete with the current crop of hot hatches, including the Astra VXR, LCR and ST220. Half the issue I think is whether or not the CTR appeals to one's way of driving or not. Some people like the comfort of having easy access to power, and others enjoy the thrill of a high revving engine. As far as the competition with modified hatches - Saxo's, Golf's etc. goes. Yes, there's some truth in that, but there are plenty of performance parts available for the CTR that see good gains, that would put it right back in the game if you wish to go down that route.

I commend Honda for keeping the CTR N/A, whilst its rivals were having to rely on bolt-on superchargers and turbo's to achieve similar power. That said, I think this can only go so far, and perhaps they should have taken a different approach for the new model. You're right! The spec does seem a bit weak in comparison to a lot of its rivals, but until it's released, no-one will know for sure. I will certainly give it an audition all the same.

Bulldog Basil,

Thanks for the recommendation. I'm currently with a company called Greenlight, which are geared towards young drivers and fast cars. None of the more well known outfits have given me anything close to a reasonable quotation. £282 sounds lovely, but your excess is pretty high!

The Honda Civic Type R is one very enjoyable car that is practical too, if you don't have a large family. My friend has a Cooper S and was amazed at the boot space. I didn't mention the paint chips or the dash visibility in my review but I completely agree with the comments made by the reviewer. If you're a taller-than-average person you'll have to get used to moving your head to see certain parts of the displays on the dash. My black CTR also has a nice collection of stone chips on the bonnet. None of them are very big or overly noticeable, unless you're really close but this is an issue every driver of this car will have to get used to.
I also echo the reviewer's comment about VTECing all the time. It is surprising how quickly you can reach very illegal speeds in this car, or so I've heard. But as well as losing your license you could end up losing a whole lot more as well. 'With great power comes great responsibility'.

“The looks of the Honda Civic Type R still turn heads...”

Written on: 28/02/2006 by richcsi (1 review written)

The looks of the Honda Civic Type R still turn heads as you drive down the street. It likes to be driven normally at 30mph with your kids sat comfortable in the back, and your wife by your side. Drop them off at the shops and head for the open road. The acceleration is superb along with handling that gives a great ride. Hit 6K revs and listen to the V-Tec kick in. Its like a turbo, but without the problems that come with them. A must buy for anyone who likes a blast now and then!

I recently traded my BMW 316TI SE to this Honda Civic Typr R. My mates said I was mad and I think other people may think the same.
However, once I sit inside the car, looking at the red sport seats, a 9,200rpm rev meters. No matter is how best the Type R can do. If you are a person who enjoy driving, a Type R is very a good choice.
A car weight just over 1,200 kg, fitted with a 200bhp VTEC engine. 0-60mph takes 6.6 seconds. Insurance is not too bad due the car is only group 17. The engine... (read more)

My partner has a Type R, his gearbox was a little tempermental in the winter as well. He has recently had it fixed under warranty by the garage he bought it from, and has now been told two weeks after the car came out that the clutch needs to be replaced as well. As you can guess Honda are not willing to pay for this even though they haven't followed their procedure correctly when fixing the gearbox. Has anyone else had any problems with Honda and the clutch??

I have had my Honda Civic Type-R for nearly a year and I can honestly say it still puts a smile on my face when you hit 6000 rpm and you hear the distinctive VTEC whistle. Forget your new Golf GTi, they are nearly 4k more than the Civic and VW still haven't got it right. The Type R comes at a reasonable cost, reasonable economy and reasonable service charges. Also the folks at Honda are brilliant, always helpful and service is second to none. Forget your Type R breaking down to, as 15... (read more)

You generally have to pay big money to own a naturally aspirated car which produces over the magical figure of 100bhp/ton. Granted, the Honda Civic Type-R is just shy of this figure, but only just, which makes it one of the biggest performance bargains around.

The worst aspect of the car is the electric power steering, which doesn't inspire the most confidence when pushing on, but once you are familiar with the massive grip levels that the tyres generate you attack corners with more and... (read more)

I have had my silver Type R from new. It was purchased in July 2003. The full retail price, after all extras, was £21,000, which included a full leather pack etc I have had some problems though. The interior fan control dial lamp does not always illuminate. There is momentary noise from the engine on initial start up in winter. The clicking from the steering unit required a new steering ring to be fitted. Drivers seat belt wear at catchment within 6 months. Honda have taken care of... (read more)

This Honda Civic Type-R car is awesome and brilliant! It's acceleration is rapid - she sings sweetly. A top speed of about 150mph - an affordable pocket rocket. A beauty that deserves to be driven very well.

I just bought a 2 year old siver one and I love her to bits. The red Type R is evident against the silver surrounds. Her wedge shaped front and sweeping lines are hugely seductive and elegant. A high pedigree Honda which everyone looks at and asks about of all ages. She drinks the fuel... (read more)

Firstly, I (as I am sure many others do) have great respect for the MkII GTI. I think it is an excellent car. I am talking about the new Civic type R here, and it would be unfair to compare that to the GTI MkII - I was comparing it to the new GTI. The MkII GTI by the way gets to 60 in 7.3 secs with a top speed of 129mph (according to the stats). Still slower (and only marginally slower than the latest turbo charged Golf - what happened VW?), but very respectable for a car of it's age. If you are calling the new CTR "boxy", and comparing that to the GTI II then you need your eyes tested, sorry. Last time I looked at a GTI2, it had more corners and flat edges on it than a 20 year old TV set. At least the CTR has curvy bits here and there.

New Golf GTI:
1,984CC, 4Cyl Turbo, 197bhp. 0-62mph in 7.2 secs, max speed 145mph.

New CTR, 1998CC, 4cyl (Nat. Aspirated), 198bhp, 0-62mph in 6.6secs, max speed 146mph.

Granted not much quicker, but still quicker, and the CTR hasn't even got a turbo on it. Drop a gear, reach 6KRPM, and it's "bye bye GTI". It has been done.

You need to know how to drive in order to get the best out of the Honda Civic Type-R, If you see a Golf GTI coming up quickly in your rear view mirror, you have to change down quick, build your revs up so that you are simmering just a little under 5500rpm, wait until until the Golf is just behind you and then put your foot down, Don't forget you can lose your license by doing more than 100mph, or more than 70mph in a 40mph zone, Be very careful with this car, with 9 points on my license, I am. I love my Honda Civic Type-R, I've only had it 4 weeks looks great handle's well and not to bad on juice just depends on how heavy your right foot is a great way to get into a 200bhp car for only £16250 but by the time I had metallic paint fog lights fitted and then the a/c which cost an astonishing £1000 the overall cost still wasn't to bad at £17835 considering the new gold GTI is nearly £23000.
