John C. Wright, The Last Guardian of Everness - The legions of evil declare open war on the waking world and there are only two men on Earth who hear the warning. The last two guardians of the gate between the real world and the dream world are an old man, Lemuel, Waylock and his grandson, Galen. In a foolhardy attempt to prove to his grandfather that he is man enough to inherit the guardianship in this time of emergency, Galen heeds a call to go into the dreaming in search of man's salvation. In so doing, he is tricked and defeated, thereby allowing passage to those forces he had meant to hold back.

This failure leaves an unprepared but determined cast of new heroes to defend Everness house from the first wave attack of the forces of evil from mankind's worst nightmares. The only hope that Peter, Raven and Wendy have to get through the night's battle are their enemies' inherent weaknesses, but it will take all the cunning and courage they have to find and exploit them and the only tools they have at thier disposal are the magic weapons hidden in the encoded Everness mansion, if they can find them and are brave enough to wield them.

The Last Guardian of Everness
John C. Wright
Tor, Sep 2004, $25.95, 336 pp.
ISBN: 0312848714

For the past millennium, the Waylocks pass down from generation to generation the arduous task of guarding the dream-gate that contains malevolent beings waiting for a lapse by a watchman so they can flood into the earth to cause death and havoc. People ridicule the vigil of the Waylocks insisting that the dark forces are the realm of myths, and fantasy.

Currently, guard Galen Waylock observes the stirring of evil beings beyond the gate as if they are readying to send the dark to swamp the light. Galen knows the Powers of Light will defend humanity, but these forces are antagonistic to liberty and the pursuits of happiness. If he awakens the Light and they win, mankind will survive but live under the thumb of a kind despot who will do what is best for all regardless of individual rights or impacts. If he fails to wake up the Light, the Dark will probably eradicate humanity. Unsure, Galen decides to let the Light sleep, but steal their fairy-weapons to use against the Dark.

Already regarded as one of the best science fiction writers of the last decade for his stirring Golden Age trilogy, John C. Wright proves he has the right stuff to write exciting modern day epic fantasy with the terrific The Last Guardian of Everness. The storyline is character-driven, although epic in proportion, as Galen decides to fight the Dark using the weapons of the Light, but without the so-called champions. Besides the beginnings of war, the description of good will have readers think about what that means while anxiously waiting for the other novel, Mists of Everness, to be published.
