Good Points: It is worth climbing Arthur's Seat for the fantastic views of Edinburgh, the castle, Holyroodhouse, the Forth Bridge and Bass Rock. Amazingly rural feeling within 45 minutes walk from city centre.

Bad Points: Very windy at the summit. The paths are not signposted and you can take a wrong turning. You need comfortable, strong shoes, don't even think of trying it in heels as the rocks at the summit are slippy. Even in September with the sunshine, it can be a bit cold when the wind blows.

General comments: We climbed Arthur's Seat following the directions in the tour guide that we bought from the www.secret-scotland.com website. These were great and made sure that we didn't get lost. They even suggested a great pub on the south side of Arthur's Seat called the Sheep Heid Inn. It is apparently one of the oldest pubs in Edinburgh and Mary Queen of Scots visited it.
