“What's gone wrong !”

Used to be great - now shocking - the new app and security is so complicated I've had to rely on telephone - but the wait time is horrendous - and as for the security - favourite city - make sure it's at least 6 letters as my fave of Paris wasn't good enough - same. With everything else so make sure your childhood friend was some one with at least 8 characters And preferably a number in their name ! “Over complicated online systems”

Breaking into an actual bank would be easier than trying to set up the app/online accounts. 45 mins on and off the phone. You have to have secure pin, password and secure passcode, enless security questions and if you fail you get put on hold again. Utterly terrible experience… Read Full Review

You were for 20 years or more the best bank in the world two rings and you would be greeted by a personality now after two rings you get a recorded message that irritates you for about 5 or 7 minutes until you hang up. “First Direct Bank dont pay joining bonus ”

I am so upset. I joined first direct in Jan 2014. One of the reasons was to enjoy the £100 bonus on opening a bank account with them. Having had a hectic year, I didnt check receipt, and whilist looking through paperwork recently, I realised that I had never received the bonus. I called to check and have now been told I did not qualify as I had had a previous RELATIONSHIP with them. Apparently I had an ISA in 2011. I had sold a property and was asked by First Direct if I'd like to transfer the money into a savings account. I said yes. 20 minutes later I was still answering questions including what was my employment, when I started my work, what actual date, how was I paid. When was I paid. Decided to move to Halifax and applied for their switching service which I then quickly cancelled when I realised that I would have lost good interest on my regular saver with First Direct. “Mortgage team”

I have been a customer of 5 years with First Direct, and have found the general banking team over this period to be efficient and helpful. Their mortgage team, particularly the underwriting department are totally opposite ends of the spectrum. “Do First Direct want my business?”

I have been with HSBC Group since 1966 and with FD since 1996. I have recently received a letter asking for additional information about myself, i.e. Proof of Identity and proof of address both to be certified by a independent professional person. Interestingly for a married woman they have made providing proof of address particularly difficult. Joined First Direct in June 2014 after some research online showed them as having very good feedback and high customer satisfaction, what a huge mistake that was!!! Do not use this bank under any circumstances! The customer service is awful, you are just a faceless pleb in their eyes. They charged me £10 as they said during a calendar month I did not meet criteria of either crediting £1000 OR maintain a £1000. I contacted them as I thought it was just a simple mistake and explained that four payments of £323 had been made during this period so they should refund charges. i completely agree and having been previously happy but now locked out like you in spite of doing all the little password hoops, seems to be a gliche. couldnt even login to send them a message to say there was a problem as that too needed yet another key. the app seems to have frozen so i had to delete and reload which of course then thought was another device so wanted another login generated. frustrated i phoned up (so not online facility anymore) and felt like they were almost willing me to go. not like how it used to be when i joined over 15 years ago. like you im going to switch because of this homemade app and the lack of support and resolution.

Oh what a shame back in the days before internet banking FD were the best on block for quick and easy bank transactions, just phone them up and two rings later you were through to friendly Yorkshire citizen who were keen to help you. But now the hand of corporate internet banking has closed in. I don't disagree with a digital card to help get things a bit more secure, but so far I have had to use it every time I want to make a payment, and also I got told couldn't make the payment until next day. Expensive phone number to call, online banking wouldn't let me on, constantly had problems, received a fifty pound charge whilst being unable to log in to my banking. “Fantastic staff - awful product”

I moved to First Direct, mostly because of all the great customer service reviews the bank keeps seeming to come top in. Whilst I could not agree more that their call centre staff are extremely polite and friendly, unfortunately the online banking system is woeful. The security system, which in fairness does try to protect against fraud (or at least push any culpability to the account holder) is desperately over complicated and simply does not work.
