“New Secure card system too onerous”

Having been with First Direct for over 15 years I am now moving accounts. I don't disagree with a digital card to help get things a bit more secure, but so far I have had to use it every time I want to make a payment, and also I got told couldn't make the payment until next day. On phoning the bank they said a security check, even though I have already sent monies to this before and it was set up with a digital card confirmation. Expensive phone number to call, online banking wouldn't let me on, constantly had problems, received a fifty pound charge whilst being unable to log in to my banking. Left after six months and was promised a hundred pounds due to being unsatisfied but had to constantly chase them via email and phone they still didn't put it in my account before it was closed so now awaiting a cheque. “Fantastic staff - awful product”

I moved to First Direct, mostly because of all the great customer service reviews the bank keeps seeming to come top in. Whilst I could not agree more that their call centre staff are extremely polite and friendly, unfortunately the online banking system is woeful. The security system, which in fairness does try to protect against fraud (or at least push any culpability to the account holder) is desperately over complicated and simply does not work. “Insane security procedure that exposes you to phishing...”

First Direct is the best bank I've been with. they are available 24/7 (even on bank holidays), they always come up with a solution and offer me a great service. Have been with them for over 12 years, will never contemplate another bank. I have been with this bank for over 10 years and fully agree with this review. The new system is absolutely awful. Certainly they've made it 'secure' now the customers can't login!!!!!!

They seem to have lost it completely - had my card swallowed on holiday because they made a mistake on the system - did the apologise or help - sadly no - they blamed everyone else.

“After 23 years ... I'm leaving First Direct”

You'd think even requesting to close my current account after that length of time would've been a cause for concern for the CS rep ... it would've been 23 years ago. But now ? FD couldn't care less, their advisers can't even disguise their indifference. Maybe it's poor wages, long hours, operational culture ... I don't know. “Online banking beyond a joke”

I'm actually about to close this account as I've had enough. Been trying to activate my online banking for over a week now.Still not working. Having been with this bank for many years, with well over £2500 per month going into account on a regular basis and for all those years on the same date, and with £500 overdraft am appalled and disgusted to find out today that they refused a direct debit which would have taken my account £33 over the overdraft EVEN though there was nearly £600 going in at midnight regular payment so overdraft cleared !! Their online service has never failed, is is easy to use and works efficiently. I would NOT recommend First Direct to anyone. I know all banks are much of a much but stick to the high street branch banks, trust me! I've been with these people for years and so long as you don't need any real customer service you are fine. Avoid like the plague!, They lure you in , give a satisfaction guarantee and promise £100 if you close account within 12 months. Found account was of no use to me , but took 3. Yes 3 hours to close it! Then they said I had not qualified on the small print for the £100 so tough luck! Then could not access via Internet, they cut it off, so more phone calls.
