Just crashed my second Samsung Spinpoint 500 Gb HDD in 6 months. Both drives started to make trouble and all of a sudden it woundt be recocnizes by Windows (or any other OS) anymore. Samsung will replace your drive but wont try to recover your data.

I got the Samsung SV1204H hard drive with my PC, which is an ADVENT 3213 from PC World.
It's features are OK; 120GB capacity (but 112/111GB registerable), and NoiseGuard technology that really works! In fact, I'd never have know that it was there... until it went wrong.
I love to fiddle around on the inside of my PV, which I'd do on a regular basis. However, recently I've taken the cover off my case and all wasn't well. It was worse than a grasping a hot radiator when you touched the hard drive! I then got back on the PC to download a PC monitoring software, which was able to confirm that my hard drive was getting to temperatures of over 200c!
On start-up, I checked my BIOS information, and it told me that the hard drive was already at 150c... AT START-UP!!! To think that the optimum working temperature for a hard drive is 35c-42c (continuous) - I think mine might have just broken that barrier!
I've contacted an engineer who has told me that getting cooling equipment for this hard drive won't help. He said that as soon as it starts overheating, it hasn't got long left!
I now have to get another hard drive. I guess this opens a door of opportunity for me; I can get an even better one!
I'm still going to stick with Samsung, but the hard drive is going to be a lot better. I'll make sure I get a cooling system for the next one, as I don't want the same thing to happen to the next one!
I'll update you on my new hard drive!

The Samsung SV1204H Hard Drive was bundled with a cheap computer package, so unsurprisingly it is not going to be the best. Providing plenty of disk space (111 Gb to be precise), it is a reliable piece of kit which makes little sound, but offers little in the way of performance, spinning at a measly 5400rpm, slow at today's standards. On benchmarking this, slow reading speeds let it down significantly, causing stuttering and slow loading speeds in new games when loading.
Overall if it was cheap, it would be handy for people looking for a large space to simply store data, which is in no hurry to be accessed.

<br>I've now got my new harddrive. It's a Hitachi Dechstart 26140 and is great! Temperature now just 23c, but that is aided by the cool harddrive cooler I got for it.
