Good Points: Some great make-up and special effects. Sticks reasonably close to the original Lovecraft short story "The Shadow Over Innsmouth". Great acting and a rollercoaster of a storyline.
Bad Points: Some of the later special effects are done using CGI which does ruin the 'nasty' splatter element to the film.
General comments: Dagon - Synopsis:
"Marooned in a malevolent storm off a bleak and desolate isle, Paul and Barbara seek shelter in a grim and soulless fishing village. When Barbara vanishes amid the deformed and repulsive villagers they encounter, Paul sets out on a frantic and fearsome pursuit to uncover her whereabouts and the secret that lies dormant beneath the cavernous ruins of the devastated township. What he discovers awakens an unnameable horror that will shatter his very existence and unleash upon the world a gruesome legend until now concealed in the deepest, darkest bowels of the ocean floor".
With The Shadow Over Innsmouth being very possibly my favourite Lovecraft short story, I must say that I was a little apprehensive before watching this film. The film does indeed stick reasonably close to the original short story (not actually the short entitled 'Dagon'), and Stuart Gordon (Re-Animator) shows his love for make-up and sickening gore once again. Unfortunately, as happens too often these days, Stuart has opted for CGI in places within the film which does take the edge off the 'nasty' aspect of the movie. But at the end of the day I came away impressed and happy that the film had done the short story justice. Now that it's at budget price, I highly recommend a purchase.
The DVD includes a theatrical trailer and a 'Making Of Dagon' documentary. It was originally released back in 2002 on Region 2 PAL. The film length is 94mins approx and the screen ratio is 1:85 Wide Screen, 16:9 Anamorphic Wide Screen.
