Good Points: Johnny Depp (despite the appalling accent).
Bad Points: Juliette Binoche.
General comments: Chocolat, based on the book of the same title, is a cute little life-affirming film. It's about a woman and her daughter who move to a very traditional, religious village in rural France and open up a sweet shop. She makes her own chcolate and cakes and seems to inherently know what sort of sweets most meet the desires of each resident's soul.
She is shunned as a single mother by the more uptight residents, but makes a few friends, notably helping one woman escape her abusive husband and an old lady to get to know her grandson.
She also strikes up a friendship with Johnny Depp's character, the leader of a group of Irish gypsies, to the chagrin of the town leaders.
Over the course of the film you see her slowly opening the hearts and minds of many of the villagers, bringing people out of their shells. It's kind of cheesy and predictable but also very sweet and very well made. It would make for an enjoyable night's loved-up couple viewing.

Chocolat is a popular film, and it was memorable for its pairing of French film star sex symbol Juliette Binoche and US film star heart throb Johnny Depp.
Binoche's character, Vianne Rocher, is an outsider who arrives in a sleepy French town to open up a confectionery shop. She then embarks on a romance with Johnny Depp's character, who is a traveller.
The film is a light hearted and amusing fairy tale which looks at small towns conservative values. It was based on a short story. ...
