These look dirt cheap for the performance...6k for a 2000 one. My worry would be the famous 'Old Fiat' rust & reliability issue... how good are they? Other thread 'Coupe war' prejudices aside. Honest answer please.
Written on: 23/06/2006
Modern Fiats don't rust any more than any other car. The body is galvanised and comes with a 10 year anti rust warranty. Coupe reliability isn't particularly good and varies from car to car as they were hand built. Electrics seem to be the main issue on mine. The windows and clock go on strike for short periods at irregular intervals. Handbrake cable freezes in cold weather - fix is to leave the car in gear with the brake off (but not on a slope) handbrake is fairly weak anyway - don't try handbrake turns. Car is an oil burner.. 1/2L 1000km if thrashed other wise none when pottering around town. Avoid supermarket car parks - the dorks with the MPV's and 20 kids ALWAYS decide to squeeze in next to you, the paintwork is soft and the doors have no side rubbers so easily get marked. Turning circle is truck sized given a very stiff front end setup and wide tyres. Boot is reasonable and the car has 2 usable back seats with child seat fixings.
The positive side is driving. Excellent handling but needs good tyres. Can be a real handful in the wet, you'll learn all about torque steer and power slides. MPG is ok given the car does 0-60Mph <6 seconds with a top end around 155Mph.
Car is a curates egg, minor niggles and things that could have been done better. I use mine weekends (being a B* company BMW driver to quote somebody) and its fine for low mileage commuting. Ferrari engines run hot and mine goes thermonuclear in traffic, never boiled over but the temp needle sits dangerously close to the red zone. All is forgiven on the open road with the roof open, windows down and the snarl of the straight 5 300Hp motor (mine is chipped). Hyundai coupes look kinda small in the rear mirror!

Great fun and great to look at. Reliability a bit suspect and although I loved my 20V Fiat Coupe non-turbo from new, when I approached 60,000 miles bits did drop off and I lost faith in it. So bought a new Alfa GT V6. However, it was still one of my favourite cars in over 45 years, and I have had dozens. So don't be put off but tread carefully and best to avoid well thrashed Turbo vesions. (read more)

Good review. Non turbo is fun, turbo is +++whooopee! Overpriced when new (24k) but excellent value now s/h. Best bargain genuine hot car for lunch money: 3-6k will get you a good one and 7-8k top whack. Downside is they need lots of looking after and build quality is iffy but rust isn't a problem as the thing is galvanised with a 10yr anti perforation warranty.
If you want a fast car that never needs attention between services then buy Japanese, not this! Coupe likes being fiddled with...Burns oil (lots), shreds tyres and will easily lose you your licence. 60Mph comes up in <6 seconds without real effort on the way to a comfortable cruise at 120. Bee Bah! Bee Bah, bust!

Bored driving a 155Mph supercar? Something odd about this review as Coupes didn't come with 'brown fabric' interiors. Interior is black with a body coloured trim stripe and either black cloth fabric seats or leather in various colours, usually black or sometimes grey. European 1.8's (pre 1998) got tan leather and a few colour combinations not available in UK. Has this reviewer been within an Asses roar of a Coupe or his he a frustrated BMW driver??

Don't go near Fiat dealers. Independent specialists do a far better job at 1/4 price of Fiat. Hard to find something at the price that goes as quickly. Having had an Evo VI, I'd say that it was the most uncomfortable car I've ever driven. Back seat passengers were actually sick through vibration. Performance Jap cars tend to be horrible for daily use unless always driven 'balls out'.
Mrs. has a Honda S2000 which is great but not very practical and 5x Coupes price for similiar performance.

I've got a 20v Turbo. I did have vibration when exceeding 120ish (on the track of course). Fiat garage where hopeless - told me I needed 4 new discs and pads £600 plus. A took it to a local garage and they freed off the calipers and fitted new pads to the inside only. They had worn due to the caliper not working properly. Sorted the problem for £70. No damage to discs etc as Fiat had said.

Unfortunately NA (non turbo/normal aspiration) cars are hard to upgrade. You will be pushed to get more than 170Hp from yours without serious/expensive engine work. Much easier to sell it and buy a good 20V turbo which is 220Hp standard and easily chipped/uprated to 300Hp although doing that dramatically reduces engine life and makes car thats already expensive to run into a wallet raper.

Not so good is the fact that I needed to replace the front tyres after 10,000 miles of wear (they were Yokahoma's). Or that the headlights don't work too well as they have gone hazy from the sun (the coup and I live in the Middle East).
