Good Points: Easy to set up and use. Reasonably priced when bought.

General comments: I have two of these Philips DVD machines between 3 and 4 years old. Both now refuse to read about 50% of recorded +RW discs even when they have just been recorded on the same machine. A caption appears informing me that either the disc 'contains unrecognizable material' or that it is an empty disc.

Although they seemed to be a good idea at the time I now regret spending my money on them.

Generally good to operate if you have a controller and good quality recording even if you put low quality recording on.

The Philips DVD-R75 seemed good value at the time of purchase. It was the only unit for the price that offered i-link DV IEEE1394 fire wire input socket. From day one I had intermittent recording errors. After 18 months, it wouldn't record or playback at all. They wanted £81 to repair it. I won't be purchasing any more Philips kits.

I purchased the Philips DVD-R75 DVD Recorder 2 1/2 years ago. The first problem (disc error/wouldn't record) surfaced at the 1 year point. I had the unit repaired and it worked fine until recently when the same issue occurred. Cost of repair exceeds that of a new unit so it is now scrap. Stay away from Philips!

I bought 2 Philips DVD-R75 DVD recorders for myself and my daughter 2 years ago, and I have had nothing but trouble with them. I get a disc error - empty disc, and a load of nonsense appears, when the disc plays perfectly well on a friend's Goodmans machine.

No more Philips for this family!

I purchased the Philips DVD-R75 two years ago for $450. It is not a bad unit. However, after only 2 years it is losing its ability to record. 'Error' and 'Warning' messages occur during recording. Although some DVD's are better than others, all are OK on my other DVD recorder ($77 at Fry's).

Something is bad with the hardware (maybe a bad burner). Philips should offer free repair to those who purchased these units.

I will never purchase another Philips product again.

The Philips DVD-R75 DVD recorder worked well for 11 months, then the record light was permanently on, and the front display was blank. It was away for approximately 4 weeks.

After a few months a disk error was displayed after 2 hours of recording. The disc error now comes on after 1 hour of recording.

I contacted Philips and was told the repair would cost £140, which was cut to £70 as a good will gesture. I think ill go to Asda and buy a new DVD recorder for £84. ...

A little over a year I began getting disk error on brand new disks, and my Philips DVD-R75 won't record any more. I have called twice, and they say it will cost $189 to repair it. I can purchase one cheaper than that. The product is inferior, and they should recall it. Another person buoght this product, and they are have some of the same problems as I.Won't record with timer, won't record without timer, needs re-booting often, disk error message on new disks, opening when turned on blinks const ...

At first I was pleased with the unit. It worked well. But, over time, (1 year), it began to have trouble. The machine would say every disk was empty even though it was full. I tried new firmware. Nothing worked. Quality was just not there with this machine.

I am a Philips fan, having always found their products dependable (I have owned most things from radio alarm clocks (1982 and still going strong) to TVs (had one for six years and upgraded for no real reason to a Hitachi which required no end of repairing from the moment the guarantee ran out), so I had no hesitation in making this my 1st DVD recorder. Especially at the £169 I paid Amazon.

Aesthetics. Looks good sitting on the stand between my SkyPlus box and Sony TV.

    Features. Does ...

I thought I was the only person to suffer at the hands of Philips with the DVD R75. It gave me nothing but grief from the moment I unpacked it. It seemed to want to go through the motions with the initial setup, but then would sporadically and inexplicably freeze up, or the picture dropped out, with a weird error message on the front display. I repeated the process of resetting the machine in accordance with the manual, but to no avail. In the end, the unit did not even respond to pressing t ...

After a 'very bad' error message appeared, my Philips DVD R75 totally locked up, and the Philips helpline said it should go back to the retailer, then philips for 'major service'. Retailer told of many other customers' similar stories. Got money back, still looking for DVD+ recorder that's good AND reliable - any ideas??

I've had nothing but trouble with the Philips DVD R75 unit. When it didn't work I called the Philips help line and got a stop-gap answer - there were about six calls made - but the recorder still wouldn't work. After about six calls, I was asked if I had the update disk - first time anyone told me about it. It arrived in three weeks, I installed it, and the unit still wouldn't work. Then I was told I'd have to send it to an authorized repair center, which I did - the unit came back in about t ...

I got my Philips DVD R75 back in August 2003. It is a good machine, but also a temperamental one. It does not like +R's at all! So I use only +RW on this machine. It also does not like certain media's - like BulkPAQ & Datawrite & Datasafe, for some reason. It LOVES the very very good O1NE media - sadly no where to be found these days!!!!

Anyway it does have disk errors from time to time, and it gets hot very quickly.

My 107D Pioneer PC-Burner is much safer to use.

I am waiting for the ...

Maybe it is just bad luck on my part, however my experience with Philips DVD recorders is not good. I originally had one of the Philips DVDR880 recorders (one of the first to the market) it lasted 6 months before it stopped working and was sent back to Philips for repair. They lost it and after 2 months I was refunded. I then bought the DVD R75 and was delighted with the improved appearance, price and functionality of this machine. Sadly this too broke after 4 months and was repaired. The rep ...

I bought this Philips DVD R75 dvd recorder on 01/07/2004 to record primarily some non-copy protected VHS movies and home videos shot on tape.
I tested the finished DVD's on three other DVD players I have... a Sony DVP-S360, a Apex AD-600A ( yes, the one with the loophole menu) and a Panasonic DVD-F85 carousel player for compatability and was pleasantly surprized!
The Sony and Panasonic played both the finalized +R and +RW discs instantly, while the Apex would not play the +RW disc but played t ...
