Good Points: It lasted a whole year and a half.
Bad Points: This thing broke after about a year and a half... no fix available on Brother.Good reason to stick with HP's.. They may occasionally break, but you can get support and parts if you are a little bit handy.
General comments: Don't get the 5140, spend a few bucks more and get a better brand.I see quite a few problems with paper jams, and drums that can't be fixed by an average person.Mine still has that brand new smell to it as well.. shows how much I used it.

Everything about the Brother HL 5140 is good, and if you press and hold the two panel buttons down together until the fourth light comes on, it resets itself. This means that it thinks you just put a new toner and drum unit in, so you can continue to use the old one. So far I have over 4000 prints on the old toner (10 000 copies) and drum (24 000 copies) with no effect on print quality yet.

The Brother HL 5140 must be one of the best laser printers when comparing cost against performance.
In its price bracket, printing costs are the cheapest around.
Pages per minute is competitive with machines double its price.
It's easy to setup and has USB2 and parallel interfaces.
It is expandable so you can add more memory or a network card interface for workgroup (networked) printing.
