I can not believe all these negative comments! I have had my Epson Stylus CX5400 for several years now (when they first came out) and have printed 100's of 1000's of prints from it - sometimes as many as 1000 in a single day. Print quality has been good throughout and it has never had to have any attention. When eventually it does die I wish that I could get another the same. It was seeing these reviews that "forced" me to jump to it's defence. I suspect that those experiencing poor quality and inconsistency have probably left them switched on for ages when not in use. First rule - when finished turn it off. My previous printer was a Stylus 200 and that worked great for years - passed it on to a friend and still going strong. Epson rock.

I have had the CX5400 printer for over four years and never been any trouble, just replace inks and run head cleaner system. I do a lot of printing. Good machine for price, reliable, making it value for money, I am thinking of changing to aEPSON RX685 but I thought why change a system that works. Therefore well recommend Epson Stylus CX5400.

Nothing, this product was ok for 4 months but then the heads were broken after use for 2 kids with school work...

When the printer needs ink, it doesn't... it needs new heads. Don't waste your money on ink buy an HP. The product is poor in my opinion and not worth the money for me I do not recommend the Epson Stylus CX5400.

I definately wouldn't ever buy an Epson Stylus CX5400 printer again and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone else. I have owned my printer for 4 years purchased it from PC World and it has hardly been used in that time, maybe on average 25 pages per month, yet problems started with the print head, ink was not clear on the pages printed in fact very fuzzy. Mine works with original Epson cartridges and not others and the most annoying thing is mine stops working if a colour cartridge runs out even if you only want to print in black. Many cartridges aren't always totally empty. I have run Cleaning cartridges through the machine but still getting blank sheets out of it. I will be taking it down to the tip in the morning.
Off to shops to buy a new HP all in one printer!

EPSON makes lousy printers. I have a CX5400 all in one printer and it died on me after 14 months. The initial problem diagnosed was 'clogged ink head' so I went ahead replacing the old ones with brand new EPSON ink cartridges and it still didn't work. In the end, I wasted 100$ alone on new ink cartridges trying to fix this piece of junk. At first I thought I was just unlucky, but I started to find out people posted similar problems on web forums. The service life for this printer is roughly about 1 year...thats it.

I certainly wouldn't buy Epson Stylus CX5400 printer again and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. I have owned my printer for 3 years (at home) and it has barely been used in that time, maybe on average 10 pages per month yet problems started with the print head only after 1 year. Mine works with some cartridges and not others and the most annoying thing is mine stops working if a colour cartridge runs out even if you only want to print in black. Many cartridges aren't always totally empty. It says my cartridge is empty even when the previous page didn't start to fade.

I have experienced the true value of an Epson Stylus CX5400. And it doesn't just cost less and simple to use. But, it's simply priceless.

“I will never buy another Epson product. I plan to...”

    written by harleygal on 01/09/2006

I will never buy another Epson product. I plan to spring for another 20 bucks to ship the Epson Stylus CX5400 multifunction printer out to Epson, but only after I have smashed it into a million pieces (and I don't even have anger management issues).

Long story short... I called their customer support line, and the first thing the guy did was inform me it would probably cost me $9.95 for troubleshooting over the phone. Then he asked what was my problem. I related the problem to him and told him that I had followed the head cleaning instructions to the letter...tried multiple days in a row...ran the cleaner from the machine and also through the computer software. First he says things like - "did you shake the ink cartridges before you put them in". Well - duh, yeah, I read the instructions. Then he says yep, I had done all the troubleshooting I could do. My printer "appears" to have what he called a "hardware problem". Now, you and I both know that there must be thousands of people who have called in about this, right? But he never mentions it as a chronic problem. Tells me yes, it's broken and I need to take it for servicing or buy a new one. Nothing they can do because it's out of warranty (how convenient). So I say, OK tell me where to go for service. Turns out the closest place to me is about 2 hours away. Then he says he can hook me up with this "secret website" where I can buy another Epson at a discount. So I take the information, and go look. Yeah, there are 3 units there that I can save less than $50 a piece on. Whoopie - I'm all over that!

I mean, it's one thing to have put a defective product out there - oh well, happens to the best of companies. But to 1) begin a customer service call with a run down of how much the HELP (or lack thereof) is going to cost you, 2) play dumb like this is the first time you heard about the problem, 3) treat me like I'm some kind of idiot and can't follow the directions in the book, 4) shuffle me off to this "loyalty" line so I can be told I should buy another Epson and then 5) have minimal savings on only a very few units... I should think that Epson will be one of the tech companies going out of business soon if this is how they treat their customers. As I said, I will never buy another Epson product, and I will steer my friends away from them.

Write off the cost over 1 to 2 years and buy new again after that, then this Epson Stylus CX5400 will satisfy you. Initial cost is not high and running costs are reasonable. However my previous printer (HP) worked for ten years and I only replaced it because its print quality was far surpassed by todays models. I will not buy another Epson no matter how cheap they seem.

Contacted Epson and they said we will let you buy another Epson at a $30.00 discount. I could not salvage the $84.00 in brand new ink cartridges I installed as recommended to fix the problem. Not to mention the ones I had to throw away that were already in the printer when it broke. Epson said they would send me some more ink cartridges once I purchased another Epson. They would not refund my money otherwise. I am very hesitant. I would rather go back to my 2 HPs that I owned previously, that have not broken yet. Not good Epson...

Purchased for moderate to light home use. Before use each time I need to clean heads or nozzles. Replacing cartridges no longer aids in print quality.

What a piece of junk the Epson Stylus CX5400 multifunction printer is!!! To look at it you think you are getting a really nice piece of equipment.

It is no problem for black and white printing, but color printing is awful! Don't even bother wasting the time or the precious ink on a photo, because the quality is not photo!

I bought it new about 14 months ago and changed the ink 1 time, and when I ran out of ink the second time, I bought ink and replaced the cartridges, and it never worked again. The head is clogged! I probably didn't print more than 100 pages the entire time I owned this thing.

I will not buy Epson again!

The worse part of the whole thing, is that now I have just spent $76.00 on ink, and the darn thing doesn't work! Maybe I can break the new cartridges open and let the kids use the ink for finger painting.

    ★☆☆☆☆

    written by bowlerboy on 03/01/2006

I just acquired one of these Epson Stylus CX5400 multifunction printers in an eBay auction, and my experience in my initial tests confirms the dozens of reports made by other customers regarding a perpetually clogged print head that steadfastly remains to be cleared, no matter how many times I run the nozzle head cleaning utility. This product obviously was either ineptly designed, or it was designed to become dysfunctional within a short period of time.

I did come to this site to glance at the reviews, but I foolishly let myself be persuaded by the review(s) that had high ratings and claimed not to be written by Epson employees (or stock holders), because I wanted to believe that I was going to obtain a good unit, although it was manufactured among a group of lemons. I minimized the insights provided by those who would prefer to throw the unit through the plate glass windows at Epson's corporate headquarters, because I knew that I would not be investing a lot of money in a used/returned item that had polarized so many customers. It seems like all you get when you buy one of these products is a trigger that will send you to your shrink for psychotherapy.

I'd like the thank all those customers who shared their experiences with the clogged head problem, because their collective experience has convinced me that it would be a waste of time for me to spend time and money trying to fix a problem on my particular machine, when it is most likely that my machine suffers from the same design flaw as theirs, and is therefore not worth the bother.

Since the printer head eventually becomes non-operational and virtually useless, don't buy this item under the delusion that you will get a good printer.

    ★★★☆☆

    written by keithmalin on 26/07/2005

I bought the Epson Stylus CX5400 after some consideration. It worked very well and consistently for about 15 months, then, as noted in another review, print quality deteriorated and could not be improved with nozzle-cleaning. The net result is that I am having to dump this machine after a relatively short time. I also found it quite bulky. The Epson ink monitoring system (where the printer stops when ink is 'empty') is a real rip-off, as it is clear that at least 30% of ink is still left. I bought a chip-resetter from the Internet, and this extended the life of ink cartridges considerably.

Bought the Epson Stylus CX5400 from Amazon at Christmas time. It did not have the ink that it was suppose to. Amazon support said that I could return it, however I would have to pay for shipping. Good enough printer, scanner, and nice easy to use software. Just don't buy it from Amazon. It seemed as though my package had been opened before, as if it were a customer return, and they just resell it as is. It turns out that Amazon is just an "in between" and they say my printer actually came from somewhere else. They were not able to tell me where. Again, great printer for the money. Mine was $119.00.

    written by MStafford on 27/09/2004

I have had no problems at all with this printer. Setup guide was clear & concise. 1-click software installation went fine. If you had an Epson printer installed before then this needs to be uninstalled before installing the new software as conflicts occur. Setup as a network printer on both a Win98 & WinXP machine went smoothly. Network printing works fine. Printing is fast and quiet. Photo printing produces exceptional results. Replacement cartridges are reasonably priced - compatible full set of black & colours for £15 delivered. Need to replace cartridges as soon as they run out otherwise the heads can dry up.
