I wouldn't get another NEC ND-2500A - mine died at 7 months old.
Reads reliably at about 2.4x if there's no dirt. Writes reliably on 25pence 4x DVDs. 50% of DVD writes at 8x are duff [well they work but they don't verify].
Writes CDs brilliantly, haven't had any problems [I write a lot of audio CDs].
Drive gets very hot, might be why it died… Read Full Review
