Good Points: CleanFriendly staffWell equipped gymSuperb swimming pool and steam room/sauna
Bad Points: Lack of staff on gym floorexpensive
General comments: I have been a member on a number of gyms in the past 3 years and can honestly say Virgin Active is the best one I have been a member of. The changing rooms are exceptionally clean, staff are really friendly and the gym itself has the latest Technogym equipment with built in TV's, and plenty of gym equipment so you aren't waiting for machines. The pool area is superb, the pool has no chlorine as it's UV treated which is great for me as the chlorine really stings my eyes. The only gripe I have is that the gym trainers are mainly on personal training sessions with clients, and there is rarely any trainers on the gym floor that are able to help members like me who don't want to pay for personal training.

I have been with Virgin (Solihull) for 6 years and recentley had to cancel after being made redundent and change of circumstances. I emailed to cancel my membership but I was advised that this was not possible as my contract was a rolling one and I had to buy out the remainder of the year even thou I had been with them for many years and they would not consider my change of circumstances. They do not even send out reminders so if you miss the last four weeks of the contract you automatically go ...

I moved house 5 months ago, so I cancelled my Virgin Active membership in february. I was told it was too late and I would still be billed for March. Fine. I only recently noticed that they had carried on billing my, so I rang up and was told that no, they hadn't cancelled, and unless I still had the cancellation form as far as they were concerned I hadn't cancelled. This being 5 month on after moving I can't find the form. This is the second time they've screwed me over, having double billed me ...

I would like to comment on Virgin active at Stockley Park. The only thing Virgin Active appears to be good at is taking my standing order,on time every single month. In return,I get a sauna that is often left dirty and smelling.A steam room that often doesnt work for weeks at a time. And a carpark where anybody from stockley park sticks their car.Which means theres often a fight for a parking space. In short Virgin active only cares about profit, not the customer. If I missed one payment my card would ...

BEWARE OF VIRGIN ACTIVE EALING CLUBVery bad customer service. Never tell about the cancellation policies while selling membership. They take your bank details and charge your card thru direct debit even when you are on flexi membership and after giving assurances over the phone that they will not charge.

Virgin Active is a great gym with friendly staff and wide variety of equipment. I would however say they are a bit overcrowded however that is a sign they are doing really well. Love it there. Keep up the good work guys.

Also trouble with contract for virgin active health club. I moved location and informed the gym and asked them to transfer membership to a gym nearer home. I still haven't had the membership transferred after 6 months. I had trouble with one direct debit and rather than contact me they referred this directly to a debt collecting agency. Steer clear!!!

Virgin Active Health Clubs customer care is very very bad to say the least. They dont give a damn about you, face to face they smile and apologise but if you threaten to leave because you have been struggling with their customer service they will politely tell you to take a hike coz they do not need you. I have been struggling with them for 4 months now and have just decided to give up as they could not be bothered. I never complained when the sauna was not working or when the club was being eva ...

Virgin Active gym on the strand is not a cheap gym. The monthly membership is £80 a month. When you compare it to Fitness First gym it looks expensive. Having been a member of both gyms I can safely say that it is worth paying extra for Virgin Active. First up you get a pool. You also get a darn site more space and machines. The best thing about Virgin Active is that you get clean changing rooms. In Virgin Active you have a cleaner who is permanently appointed to cleaning the changin ...

Unfortunately , virgin active has departed from the whole philosophy of holmes place and instead is following into the foot steps of fitness first ie they will do anything to recruit more members despite an overcrowded gym. The clapham branch is the proof of it. They charge you a fortune and yet you have to wait to use the machine.Forget about using this gym from 7pm or even on a saturday morning.

We too are in the same position with this Virgin Active Health Clubs diamond membership and are now writing to their headoffice - I think the more people that write to complain they will have to listen to their customers as there is obviously something wrong with this type of membership. I have another 10 months to go. Why can they not send out reminders?

Since Virgin Active took over from Holmes Place the quality of the gym and general service for customers has gone drastically down hill in my opinion. I think the Croydon club is dirty and ill kept, with filthy looking equipment. Supplies of hand towels and toilet tissues are regularly out of stock on my visits and remain so for a number of days - 2 weeks in total recently! Last year a group of members requested to meet management and a follow up meeting was requested, we are still waiting for ...

First of all, I had an amazingly unprofessional personal trainer and despite a legitimate complaint, Virgin Active never paid back the money they owed me for the unused sessions.
Moreover, watch out for the dirty changing rooms, the overcrowded and bad quality classes, the generally super basic facilities, unfriendly staff, the smelly & broken showers.
The managers don't care about the clients and their requests or concerns.
Also an issue with the towels: don't dare asking for a second one ...

I've been battling with Virgin for 5 months now regarding a complaint over membership. I have a legitimate medical reason for not attending the gym - I have been advised against it as I am experiencing a complicated pregnancy and am currently undergoing physiotherapy - but they are not being helpful to me by suspending or canceling my membership.
I'm in the latent stages of labour and people aren't speaking to me- apparently I'll get a call back within 24 hours (the 3rd time I've been told that ...

Would not organise promised personal training sessions, which is part of the starter package. The staff were not aware of how to freeze memberships (taking money out of your account anyway). Would not return phone calls. Weren't cancel membership promptly when asked, taking weeks to cancel, even though the forms had been signed.
The list really does go on. Virgin Active was the worst experience I have ever had with a gym, I will never go back to them and would never recommend them.

I use the Putney Gym as my home gym, my contract allows me to use any of the gyms in London ( It used to be Holmes Place).
There appears to be a lot of double standards within the group and a lack of consistancy.
I used to get free towels, I dont get them anymore at my home gym, but do get them free at the other ex-holmes place gyms?
(although some of the staff are kind enough to give them out)
They used to give out small sweat towels, but these were stopped to do thier bit for the environ ...

This gym doesn't seem to know the first thing about customer service. The deskgirls are rude in my opinion, some of the instructors seem barely fit themselves, and they have the audacity to not let me freeze the membership because I am a few days late in requesting the freeze -- because I only found out yesterday I can travel for December!
