“MONEY WELL SPENT!!”

Written on: 22/05/2013

My wife and I retired last year and decided to join a good gym. We were already members of a local council-run health centre which was OK but lacked in 'pamper' facilities like a sauna, swimming pool, restaurant etc. So we spent a few days touring the entire Dartford/Gravesend/Bexley area, settling on David Lloyd Dartford as top of our shortlist. What nearly put us off - and thank goodness they didn't - were the awful reviews on this and other review websites ...?? That was in January... (read more)

“Disgraceful management and customer service at Farnham”

Written on: 11/05/2013

Beware of this gym if you are planning pregnancy or fall pregnant and can't exercise... They will not make any allowances and ignore the clauses of the contract that you can apply, instead their line is they will only allow you to suspend your membership for up to 9 months but you have to continue to pay 25% of the monthly fee...for what exactly?! The suspension provision doesn't say it applies to pregnancy. They take at least three weeks to respond, are too busy to have a meeting or see you... (read more)

“Great gym with passionate staff”

Written on: 09/05/2013

I've been a member for 7 years at solihull south. I've always been really impressed by the friendliness of all staff, as well as their professionalism and passion for helping everyone on their fitness journey. Over the past several years I've had debilitating health issues yet they have been incredibly helpful to enable me to overcome these problems, going way above and beyond the call of duty. I can not thank them or recommend them enough. (read more)

“Stay Away”

Written on: 04/05/2013

Beware do not join this gym unless you want to be disappointed. We have been members for a few years, great management staff......they left. Exposed an incompetent bully of a general manager. Changed their menu to dictate that you can only eat chick peas and lettuce, they added specials when it failed. When you asked for these there is never enough food in, if you are lucky to order a meal of choice it's hit and miss whether its edible. You are treated like it should be a privelidge for you... “Awful.. Totally lacking in customer service skills”

Written on: 20/04/2013

David Lloyd offers very little value for money and the customer service is appalling. My experience as a member was awful.. Needless to say I cancelled my membership counting down the days of the 3 months notice I had to give. This company lacks customer service skills. There are a few exceptions to this but in general I would say the attitude of staff is awful! Unhelpful and pretentious! Don't waste your money! (read more)

“Appaling reception service ”

Written on: 15/04/2013

Although i am not a member I got in contact 3 times with my local david lloyds. The first time I went there I was actually dissapointed by the look of the reception. Before going there and hearing how expensive and exclusive their gyms are, I was very dissapointed by the outdated old looking reception. My local council gym looks 100% better, their reception staff are really nice and helpfull and the membership is half the price. I got in contact with them few more times after and the staff... “Appalling customer service”

Written on: 11/04/2013 by emmaleighnixon (2 reviews written)

David Lloyd have no respect whatsoever for loyal customers. Their customer service is the worst I have ever experienced. All was going well with our family membership until with no consultation they pulled all the 6pm classes for our 3/4 year old. Despite lots of complaints from existing customers and the classes being oversubscribed their pathetic argument was it was too 'excitable' for these children to be doing classes at 6pm. (More like too costly but they won't say that will They!).... (read more)

“Bullying tactics used by David LLoyd gym”

Written on: 09/04/2013 by apple03 (2 reviews written)

Have enjoyed using the outside pool over the last four years. It was the only health club to have an outside pool (the other clubs that I looked at only had inside pools) so that is why I joined even though it was approximately twice the price of these other clubs. I explained this point at the time of my joining of my joining.. However, at no point during my signing up meeting, was it pointed out that even though I had taken full membership that David Lloyd would place such restrictions on... (read more)

I joined David Lloyd, Farnham and subseqentley had a leg injury at work. Would DLK accept this?... NO, they required doctors letter, my doctor charged £18 for the letter, then they said it wasn't produced in good time etc etc etc... The story goes on. If you have an injury and incapacitated or are made redundant from work, this is bad enough in a recession... I am not surprised as I had been a member for four years and finding that they had restricted the outside pool to such an extent that I can not now use it I tried to speak to someone at reception but they just toild me to write a letter which they will not even address instead passing me to their solicitor who is threatening me with court. There is no such thing as customer service their preference is to simply bully their clients. Obviously they think it is fair to change access to the facilities that you pay so much for so altering the whole nature of what you sign up for and guess what they don't explain that they will do this when you join up. They then expect you to pay 3 mpnths notice when I can't even get to use the pool and all this on a full membership tarriff. Obviously the fact that they have had over four years money is not enough they think they will then take you to court to make you pay for a facility that they then withdraw. I am disgusted with their attitude

What a Pity when the staff get trained to take your money they don't get trained on the basics of customer services. Went to query a membership break due to new baby on the way yet staff and sales managers so rude to me, I immediately changed my mind and demanded to cancel. “Ipswich DL”

Written on: 11/03/2013 by mark252071 (1 review written)

The disgusting customer service at David Lloyd is legendary. My wife and I both paid our membership fees a year up front by credit card to secure a discount. She had to cancel for medical reasons and so gave the months notice required by the contract. DL don't believe members who give notice for medical reasons and demand a confirmation letter from doctors. Because her Dr didn't produce the letter quickly enough, DL said the notice period would have to start from the beginning of the next... (read more)

Savvygymuser's Response to mark252071's Review

Hi, do you think it's unreasonable to expect a doctors note to prove an illness that stops you training? I'm sorry to hear that your wife had some medical problems, but suppose she was just trying to wangle out of her gym contract? As several thousand people must do at each gym every year.

Last time I checked DL was a legitimate business, looking to make money.

DL do conform to the OFT standards with their gym contracts (They are one of the few who do!) which actually only covers the length of time a contract can be for, not valid reasons for cancelling early.

“Poor service; money trap”

Written on: 09/03/2013

The website is very misleading. Some weeks they have no classes at all and the rest of the weeks all classes are hapenning on the same day which limits your attendance. Some of the listed activities do not exist at all. The personal trainers use hard sell techniques and do not show your even the basics on the gym equipment. The constant message is you need to pay for personal training. So if you are looking to use the gym and classes, you should look elsewhere. (read more)

Written on: 21/02/2013

I am very happy with the DL club I go to in Ringwood and think one gets value for money. However, I was more than disappointed with the way the New year's eve party was organised. Having been told by numerous friends to avoid eating at the David LLoyd I was prepared to give it a chance and so booked 2 tickets for NYE. The buffet was really not good at all. I have been a member for David Lloyd Club in Bushey for over a decade and have visited less and less over the years as the facilities and customer service has deteriorated. Completely agree with above comments about the Luton branch - they really don't care about their existing customers. They apply aggressive sales tactics to secure new business - that is their primary objective - and the Fitness First deal mentioned above really leaves a nasty taste. If you like training in the evenings they will make you feel really guilty about staying until closing time, giving you evil stares as you walk out. In fact the staff make tanoy announcements in a real huff often an hour in advance of closing and fifteen minutes thereafter, sometimes closing the facilities (e.g. sauna) 15-30 minutes before they should.

And to top it all of, they scammed me with the same old stuff that has happened to loads of other people, by saying they're signing you up to a 3 month contract, and giving you the 12 month contract papers to sign and forcing you to pay for the remainder of your unwanted contract. Would rather be unhealthy than pay this place any more money. (read more)

“Joining Vouchers”

Written on: 30/10/2012

Had a awful experience with David lloyd and was treated like a complete muppet. I was recommended via a friend who was told they would receieve vouchers for recommending a friend. Vouchers where never issued then advised they can take a while then told they had expired ? i questioned this and might as well been talking to a brick wall, very unhelpful staff. I also found out they sent my friends vouchers to my email address then was told it was my fault by a very agitated manager. i have... (read more)

I know how you feel. I am 'having fun' with them now...and ARC (Europe) Limited - I appreciate however that ARC do not have sufficient details of why they are chasing so do not hold any negative feelings towards them.

I have a situation where they added a second individual to my membership without any form of authorisation or even acknowledgement from myself. I raised this issue in May when I received my 'Cancellation' receipt yet they still did not address my questions. We are now in (nearly) November and ARC are chasing me for £202.50 I am not happy with this and am confirming my rights and where I go from here - I will be seeking legal advice.

I though the gym itself, i.e. facilities were decent but I think their treatment of people who terminate their membership is...well, disgusting. I'm not happy.

“Buyer Beware - David Lloyd Not A Customer Friendly Company”

Written on: 19/10/2012

I and my family (six people) joined David Lloyd and paid the annual fee in advance, at no point during the sales process did they point out the 3 month notice period (we would have remembered). We found the children's facilities were not what we were led to believe, with many requiring additional fees!! Therefore, we didn't attend as a family that was the original reason for joining. I used the gym four times a week and the personal trainers at least once a week and one of my children had... (read more)

“Vile company ”

Written on: 10/10/2012 by Wayjay1984

I joined last year and paid for a year upfront. The staff and gym was ok but not really worth the money. Due to a major shoulder injury and needing surgery I told them I wouldn't be rejoining they said that was fine but failed to tell me I had to email or write a letter to then to cancell. I received no bill letter or phone call just a letter from a collection agency threatening legal action unless a paid £342 in 10 days when I spoke to their staff they told me "u should have read the small... “The worst health club ever!”

Written on: 09/10/2012

They really need to work on their terms and conditions and they need to ask their staff to learn them, starting from managers until the front desk! terrible customer services. tricking and lying to the customers is their approach! Their services look tempting before you join (nice indoor/outdoor pool, tennis courts, nice gym, never busy etc), but once you join they don`t take care of you as a customer and it is also so expensive!! It is not worth it to join David Lloyd under any... (read more)

“David Lloyd is a total rip off”

Written on: 08/10/2012 by bg-123456 (1 review written)

I have had a terrible experience with David Lloyd gyms, from being mis-sold at the start to having money taken out of my account when it shouldn't have been. I've also been harassed for payments I don't owe. It's got so bad that I have built a website to share my story and hopefully stop others from making the same mistake as I did and joining this totally incompetent company. You can see my full story at davidlloydripoff.co.uk. (read more)

Juliebelle's Response to bg-123456's Review

Written on: 07/11/2012

This is a dishonest organisation. They are in the business of gaining membership through deception and reading the comments on this site prove this. I am a new member of this club and have been subjected to miss-selling and I have registered my complaint with Trading Standards. I am pursuing my complaint and will not rest until it is sorted. I think we are all running scared because we dont want our credit files affected by this unscrupulous organisation. I joined David Lloyd specifically for its year round outdoor swimming pool facility which is what they sold to me. One month after joining they put up a sign saying that they are going to close it for five months. I am actively pursuing this complaint and will keep this site informed of progress.

“DL WARRINGTON PRICES”

Written on: 07/10/2012

There's a recent major and public controversy at DL Warrington relating to new Total Fitness members (Warrington Branch of TF now closed) being offered a "special price deal" to join DL.(Supposedly TF members were originally offered £39.99 per month and this then increased to £60 per month following an outcry from DL members - according to the Warrington Guardian and Radio 4. Both of these prices are substantially lower than current standard DL rates in Warrington.) Does anyone know: (1)... (read more)
