“Just A Cash Cow That Doesn't Care About Anything”

★☆☆☆☆

written by McClellaniw340 on 22/08/2021

This place was great when it was LA fitness, but now that it has changed to "Esporta" it is just as bad as planet fitness. It's nothing but a cash cow and they don't care about anything but sales. They have about a dozen sales staff but there's never any staff members on the floor taking care of the place. It's a small facility and they're selling super cheap memberships and so the place is overcrowded with people who don't really care about fitness and don't practice good gym etiquette and the place becomes a disaster zone with no order and weights strewn all over the place and often the machines are all taken by a lot of people who are just sitting there on their cell phones not even using them. It's so bad that sometimes dumbells go missing because people take them and leave them in random places so you sometimes won't be able to find the weight you need. They also do not have enough clips for all their cables and I have had to start bringing my own otherwise my workout gets interrupted by me having to wait for someone to finish on another cable so I could take the clip from it. And today when I was working out there was absolutely no paper towels anywhere to be found on the ground floor. And worse yet, the mens lockers never get cleaned and are constantly full of disgusting things like mens pubic hairs that need to be cleaned up if I want to use one. To use this facility I am basically paying to have to do a bunch of cleaning and grunt work that ought to be done by staff members but isn't because they don't care. I end up spending so much time cleaning up after other people, and looking around for lost weights and equipment, and waiting for equipment to be freed up so that I can use it, and dealing with other such nonsense like looking for paper towels today that I can't even finish my workouts in time before they are kicking me out (and its impossible to tell when they are closing because they can't even be bothered to set their clocks right either). This place is absolutely terrible, its unprofessional and a disgrace to the fitness industry and the entire business world. There is 0 accountability here (even though the A in esporta is supposed to stand for accountability, its just an empty marketing slogan). None of the staff even care about fitness or the gym, all they care about is selling new memberships, and once you are a new member you are just a number. After being a member of LA fitness for a long time, one month of it being EsportA has caused me to go somewhere else, and I recommend you do the same.

“Virgin Active Chiswick Riverside”

★☆☆☆☆

written by AndreSantos1997 on 20/10/2016

Not worth joining! Besides paying a expensive joining and high price every month they don't really care about you! They make it sound so excited when they call you in and show you the club, calling you almost everyday but after joining they will no longer care about you! I was promised so many things upon joining therefore the high joining fee, however I had to wait almost 1 year to receive those and I only received them because I kept constantly calling. Staff aren't too nice either. I have been a member for 3 years and for the past 3 years I have been calling there is no one from the membership team available to help you, however when you ask the reason why they tell you to send an email because the people that are there are only there to sign people up, which tells me they don't really care about the people that are joined but what they will get from new members. But if there is payment issue to be solved they you will sure give a call right away. DONT FALL FOR THEIR TRICKS AND SCHEMES!!!

“Pathetic lazy incompetent”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Isittoomuchtoask on 09/06/2015

Belfast club now Virgin Active, no sign of a lead coach, leads to personal trainers/fitness instructors standing at computer drinking coffee ignoring issues on the gym floor, handy getting paid a wage for drinking coffee. Bins loaded with dirty tissues overflowing beside the water fountain, dumbbells and barbells left laying around, no trainers confident enough to be authoritative and advise members to put weights away after use. Faulty equipment left right and centre. Sent several complaints to the club as has my father in law, not once have we received a response, obviously there is no one assigned to members retention. The club was honestly 10 times better value when it existed as esporta. I worked in David Lloyd as a personal trainer/fitness instructor, yes it's more expensive but at least you get your money's worth, Virgin active = members 3000 plus, 1 squat rack, 1 lat pulldown, 1 leg press, need I say anymore??? Honestly is pathetic, whoever is in charge is taking home his/her pay check way to easy!!!

“Virgin Riverside Chiswick”

★☆☆☆☆

written by KaylieGreenwood387 on 19/01/2015

So you spend the £500 joining fee and then anything from £260 per month membership, so you think OK this'll be a cut above, but you'd be wrong, unless you like tennis, the tennis facilities are great. The gym section is as equipped as any other standard gym no more no less, but there is hardly anyone ever there, just some very weak people doing curls whilst staring out the window blankly, similar to a mental ward. The aerobics classes are also always empty and are very limited in times and choice, the poor instructors really have to work hard to get energy out of a big room with three bored housewife’s who'd rather be sitting downstairs drinking wine. Occasionally you'll see a nano celeb or even a micro one, the staff think that's part of Chiswick Riversides 'exclusivity', they make a big deal about prices keeping the gym 'exclusive'. Hhhhm then how was it that two weeks ago two 18 year old Raggas with their pants down below their backsides were in the gym changing room (and these guys are regulars), their conversation went something like this. ragga #1 "like ya na beed (you know what I mean), dat gyal (that girl) was spo'in me big ty (was looking at me big time) They punched each others fists in the air and chuckled whilst they broke out a packet of friutellas and some ribena Ragga#2 'yeah init man, das right, easy same speed (I don’t' have a translation I didn't understand) So there you go, there's your 'exclusivity' Oh and the wet area, it's like a scene from Cocoon, no one under 70 and absolutely no one with a gym type body, all saggy baggy and pale. In the dining area women sit around at 3 in the afternoon whilst their kids run around aimlessly, they all look the same, hard faces because they have lost too much body fat (through starvation, the unhealthy look) and all look slightly like Jimmy Saville, they also have dieted away their backsides but strangely seem very proud of the absence of it. I’m sure one wife could go home to another’s husband and he wouldn’t notice. It is very ironic that a Gym that costs so much and self proclaims to be some sort of high flyers social club, actually instead leaves one with the same feeling you would get when looking at an impoverished establishment such as an abuse clinic or the like, as no one seems very happy or content or indeed in shape, it's a very sad place, as, it seems to be in denial, it's not what it thinks it is, but it's made up of clients who aren't what they think they are either, so it's a self perpetuating phenomenon, the gym tells them what they want to be, and they in turn tell the gym, I hope one day a huge psychiatrist’s couch is built so that the Esporta Riverside and its clients can sit on it whilst being analyzed, or even anal-ised for that matter that would probably work even better.

“A club dying on its feet.”

★☆☆☆☆

written by 264Peterson on 25/09/2014

I've been a member here for 11 years and since Virgin took over, the standards have just continually gone down hill. Lots of nice people have left and have been replaced with people who are clearly paying a lot less than the full membership. Children run out of control, teenagers with tattoos swear, staff openly complain to guests and all in all it's quite a depressing, grim experience. If you can get a membership for £20 a month because you're in an essential service, fair enough, take it and just expect it to be like a council run facility. Everyone else, vote with your feet! I would have left a long time ago but I hoped it would pick up but it hasn't and actually it's getting worse.

“Esporta/Virgin Active, Stoke Gifford, Bristol”

★★☆☆☆

written by Eaton420 on 19/07/2014

I have been a member of this club since it first opened many years ago, and, even when it was in financial difficulties the then Esporta was being run as it always was - a members only club (with appropriate guest passes)and with a range of facilities. I admit that some things could have been kept in better condition such as the showers (I can only comment on the Ladies changing rooms), some studio equipment and most of all the air conditioning, or lack of it. This had always been a problem and, sad to say, still is. There were many social events held for the members that wished to take part, a fairly good restaurant (nobody expects gourmet cuisine), many children's activities including day trips, excellent studio classes with very good instructors that came from outside of the club and a spa which was used by members both male and female and guests. There has always been a crèche and in the early days a hairdressers. Members were asked about what they liked and disliked - no on-line feedback that only certain members use - but, actual pieces of paper displayed outside of the studios and gym for all to pick up and fill out should they wish. Since Virgin Active have taken over they have put in place many more machines in the gym which is good but now the gym is cramped, the studio classes are predominantly taken by members of staff (a financial saving) and we do not have the array of both classes and instructors that this particular club was once well known for, and now they are closing the popular spa with only a couple of weeks notice for both members and spa staff alike. No-one took the trouble to ask members if this was what they wanted they said is was due to feedback that the gym needed expanding and another studio put in place. Next to go I have been told, is the crèche. Well, I can get the sort of facilities that Virgin Active will be giving me at my local council run leisure centre, in fact, they have a spa/beauticians and a crèche and have a very varied class timetable. I can get all this for a fraction of the cost of my membership to this club. I started by saying I have been a member since it first opened, during this time I have made many friends (although many have chosen to move their allegiance to other clubs), but, now I only see it as a somewhere to meet the friends that are still members and have a cup of coffee after a reluctant trip around the gym or swim in the pool. By the way, we now have to purchase Costa coffee which is not everyone's choice. They had the coffee machines so why have Costa Coffee take over? The days when I really looked forward to going to Esporta and taking part in classes and using the gym and pool have rapidly depleted, I sometimes did three classes in a day and was at Esporta at least five days a week. For those members who just want to use the machines in the gym, have a sauna/steam (if they are working) and use the pool and are happy to pay handsomely for these pleasures, then that's fine, but, the long standing members now feel short changed by Virgin Active and I feel that the 'Family Club' it once was is no more and will never be again. I have just had a letter from Virgin Active informing me of the 'reluctant' closure of the spa which was due to expansion of the gym and studios. I shall see what happens, but, feel that my membership will soon come to a reluctant end.

“filthy, expensive, broken club”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 14/04/2013

DO NOT JOIN! Was a member when it was the Brighton Health And Raquet club. The place now unrecognisable. Since virgin have taken over the decline all round has been simply unbelievable. The machines are ALWAYS out of order the changing rooms and showers are filthy. The toilets are disgusting with overflowing sanitary bins. The showers are clogged with hair and the floors unwashed. The staffing has been dramatically reduced and it shows. Management are clearly not managing. Im a nurse and i am seriously concerned about the poor hygiene. I have witnessed a child putting there hands onto a toilet seat covered in faeces. There was no cleaner around so a lifeguard who was the only visible member of staff was called! The standards have declined yet the fees continue to rise. I have decided that it is such poor value for my money and as i have seen no improvements at all, in fact the opposite i am leaving. There are better clubs with higher standards and facilities for less money. My only regret is that i didn't leave sooner.

I absolutely agree with this. The club has gone so far down as to be unrecognisable. Thanks for ruining a good, fun club. It now has no atmosphere, hardly any staff, normal staff cleaning around your feet as you try to use the facilities so they can leg it out of the door and a bar that shuts so early, no-one expects to get a drink any more there after about 8pm. I too am leaving and that is pretty sad after 11 years!

Virgin Active Brighton: Smelly facilities, dirty changing rooms and shower areas, faulty equipment.......target driven and aggressive management style, some very inept, fairly rude and unapologetic new staff - the list goes on, the company running this club now is in the wrong industry!

Since this club has been taken over by virgin it has hit rock bottem. The machines are always out of order and the toilets and changing rooms are filthy. Horrendous value for money. I have made numerous complaints and many others have also whilst i have been standing there at reception!.

I am a nurse and the standards of hygiene concern me greatly. I have decided after 10yrs to leave this disgusting, dirty, broken and hugely expensive club.

“No problems yet...”

★★★★☆

written by JohnHarvey on 08/11/2012

I am a member of Virgin Active at Hunts Ground, Bristol and so far, I've found nothing to complain about. Okay, the membership is a bit on the expensive side for me, but I live less than a mile away and the place is open from 6.30 a.m. until late at night. I've honestly got no excuse not to train there nearly every day, even though I have a busy working schedule. I strive to get my money's worth and take full advantage of the facilities and free classes. Let's face it, ANY health club membership is costly, if you only drag yourself through the door once in a blue moon. I have also found the staff polite and friendly, and the showers, changing rooms, etc are quite clean and adequate. I can't comment on the "problems" of joining fees, cancellations, etc, but aside from these complaints, I feel that some of the members whom I have seen at Virgin Active can be very petty and demanding. Some of them have behaved like spoilt kids throwing their toys out of the pram, expecting to be pandered at every whim. I've trained at some VERY grotty and unpleasant gyms in the past, but believe me, Virgin is not one of them. As far as I'm concerned, I'm happy.

“Absolutely shocking!!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 12/05/2012

I had joined my local Esporta gym (Humberston Country Club) as I was told and states in the contract I signed that I could use any of the other gyms owned by Esporta around the country. As I'm a contractor who works all over the country I thought this was a fantastic addition to have. I used the gym for several years until it was bought out by Virgin, who told me I could now only use my own gym, the one I joined in the first place. I told them that it was in my contract I could use all other gyms and they said that was never the case. So I cancelled as I was only able to used my own gym a few days a month. They then told me I had to pay 3months worth of membership as it was in the contract. I refused and cancelled my direct-debit as it was a breach in contract. After 2 months I recieved a phone call from the membership manager at my local gym who asked why I was cancelling. I said I could no longer use the facilities at the other gyms owned by Esporta. She said that I COULD use the other gyms and the information I was given was wrong. I was actually over the moon at hearing this news. She said I all I had to do was pay for the last 2 months and I could use their facilities again. I told her I refuse to pay money for a gym that I couldn't use due to their incorrect information. She then got nasty and said it is in my contract to give 3months notice if I want to cancel and I must still pay during that period. I've now got debt collectors hassling me for 3 months money as I didn't give them notice and I am still refusing to pay. Please do not fall into the same problems and stay well clear of Esporta and Virgin.

“Rubbish, mis-selling, Terrible gym, and bad treatment. ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by user.one on 15/04/2012

I was mis-sold membership, the gym isn't in fact as it looks so don't be fooled, when you join you find that you don't get treated well and they're not interested in your enquiries, you'll be lucky to get to the classes, the program was rubbish. They lied to me and they lied about their own terms and conditions and they told me stuff that was not in their terms and when I spoken to them they started to threat me with stuff that wasn't in their terms and conditions. It was absolutely outrageous. One of the staff lied about he was manager but he wasn't. I managed to meat the real general manager at the end after i mentioned that i'll take the case to the trading standards they decided to put me through to him and he realised they were wrong and after he apologised but it was too late as the damage and stress have already happened. They'll basically try to mis-sell you membership in a very nice way and once you sign the contract they start to rip you off and expect you to give up and live with it but I didn't. I'll never ever in my lifetime join this gym again.

I signed up to Esporta, which seemed like a nice family oriented club. They were taken over by Virgin Active and the club changed beyond recognition. It became dirty and incredibly crowded. I gave notice to my 12 months contract, but they are now chasing me for month number 13 - threatening with giving my alleged debt over to a debt recovery sharks. My advise for anyone buying a gym membership - give notice the day you sign the contract and demand a written confirmation of the date of the last and final direct debit.

“Esporta Bristol. Nice club ruined by poor customer...”

★★☆☆☆

written by Jpl60 on 18/03/2012

I enjoyed using this club and have been a member on and off since it first opened. However since I re-joined last year they have tried to take monthly direct debits from my bank account several times even though I paid up front a full one year subscription. My card was blocked when I still had two months membership to run and was finally after three weeks unblocked only to find it blocked yet again four days later! Every time I spoke to reception they would let me in and agree nothing was owed and it was a error yet a few days later there would be a letter telling me I owed a months subscription and they would add £30 if not settled straight away! The manager did not even bother responding to my complaint and the person that said she had sorted all the mix up with head office never sent the letter she promised she was doing as she called me and has been either unavailable or "in a meeting" for three weeks now. Then this week I find they have cancelled my membership from March 1st even though they agree that I am all paid up until April 1st. I would never trust this company with a direct debit which they insist on even if you pay for a full year in advance and now that they have ruined my last two months membership I would not concider joining again. You should never believe anything said when you join as it seems to be a lot of lies judging by all the one star reviews they receive. Be very careful before you sign as they make out that there is a one month notice period instead of the three if you change to Virgin Active but the truth is you are tied into a 12 month contract unless you pay an extra £30 a month on the off peak price.

Savvygymuser's Response to Jpl60's Review

Written on: 02/07/2012

I have read and heard many reviews of Esporta Bristol being bullish and use unsavoury sign up tactics! Now they are virgin they are little better, but the customer care infrastructure should be better. It's a shame that there isn't a decent gym in the area because I'm sure esporta/virgin would have to sort out their act if there was!

“Utter Rubbish !!!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 17/03/2012

Its taken me 3 years to voice my opinions about this company but nows the time to provide my humble opinion. I worked for this shoddy outfit at a senior level for their flagship club, Chiswick Riverside, following a £30 million insurance rebuild. I'm sure they paid somebody to torch it. They spent over £50k in recruitmnent fees alone to bring in professional people that could help them relaunch and run the club to the high standard it required. What a great bunch of people they were i hasten to add. I witnessed 5 General Managers in 12mths, thats how hire and fire the the company were .. excuse the pun for those that know the history of the club !!! Sadly, the ego-ridden directors of the company at the time, were running the company like a corporate regime relying on a culture of fear amongst employees to conform or move on. I left a 10 year career with a multi-national company to join this bunch of tyrants. Whats a regrettable mistake that was. But look forward not back. The club was and hopefully still is an absolutely fantastic facility. Something i am still personally proud to say that i helped open and re-launch. Generally the members that had money were nice people. Unfortunatley the "wanna-be" members who didnt have money (but liked to think they did) would demonstrate behaviour and attitude that was nothing more the 5 year olds throwing their toys out their pram. To a point i could undertsand their frustration with the company and the "regime" but nonetheless i cannot condone intimidating and threatening outbursts from members to employees who were just trying (struggling) to do their job. My lasting impression of this company was that the minority of this club had some really great employees and some super members. Unfortunatley this was not the case for the majority. As for the company .. dont give them a penny ! Anon

“Service is a joke”

★☆☆☆☆

written by AlistairRennie on 03/11/2011

This place is a joke, been a member for 6 years and the only way you can speak to someone is if you pretend to be someone who wants to sign up for new membership. If you're an existing member, forget it - Helen, the person responsible for existing memebers NEVER answers the phone (actually she did once, just once mind you), NEVER returns calls and even tried to keep my membership running while i recovered from surgery. After 6 years, they want 3 months notice before terminating my memebership. Prices have also been rocketing while they've clearly been cutting costs. Showers / steam room / sauna frequently dont work. Service here is a joke, find another gym, there are so many better gyms in the area where they actually value their members. You give esporta Chiswick about £90 a month and they make you feel like they're doing you a favour. Steer clear of this poorly run organisation as much as possible!!!!!

“Mi-selling and very poor customer service (Chiswick)”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 18/10/2011

The good - location The bad - customer service from all departments, integrity of sales team Mis-selling I joined Esporta Riverside Chiswick to play tennis, specifically before work. I was assured that I would be able to have lessons as soon as the club opened so that I could get to work on time. All sounded great! Then reality struck once my signing fee and direct debit had all been taken. The receptionist laughted at my request to book a tennis lesson so early saying none of the coaches start before 0830 and none would be willing to start as soon as the club opened. Would I consider a Saturday lunchtime instead... Then once having had the tennis assessment I was again assured that I would receive my grading and information on how to join the tennis ladder and social tennis scene. Surprise, surprise, nothing arrived, and after calling and emailing to chase, again nothing. The icing on the cake was having my bicyle stolen from outside of the club (I do not blame the club for this even though it was locked up) but the fact that the club could not be bothered to respond to the police enquireies for their CCTV footage. The police even gave up contacting the club and called me thinking I would have more luck - did I? Of course not. After honouring 15 months of a 24 month contract I gave notice (I didn't even return to the club after the 3rd month) and once again, no response from the club until the magic direct debit did not arrive. Then I get an email - what a surprise! I re-stated my reasons for terminating and was offered a tennis lesson at 0730 (still not early enough). I responded once more and have to date heard nothing. Esporta in the meantime have engaged a debt collecting service to send me letters and text messages requesting payment of significantly more than 2 months of unpaid membership fees. I cannot believe the appalling level of service from a club which charges such high fees. I have written to head office but am anticipating no response as that is how the rest of the employees have chosen to deal with the issue so far. I believe they have fundamentally lied in the sales process and effectively mis-sold their services. If you want a straight forward gym where the equipment is old, can play tennis during the middle of the day, and are happy to pay a very high price and don't expect any level of service then you should be delighted with the Riverside club. If however you want something more I would recommend running outdoors along the river or in a park...

“New unfair charges to kids swimming at Esporta kingston ”

★★☆☆☆

written by jennysouter on 09/10/2011

I was highly disappointed this afternoon when i took my 2 children swimming to the kingston branch of the Esporta clubs. The receptionist reminded me that my kids were not members of this club - as for as i was aware for the last two years of my membership "kids go for free". I reiterated this thought to him and he told me that the rules has been changed. Since Virgin Active has taken over this Esporta club earlier this year they have recently introduced a children swimming charge at this club. Each time an under 2 year old wanted to join their folk/s for a swim the fee is £5. If you have an older child of 3+ years then the fee goes up to £10. But, you can however put the 3+ year old on a monthly membership for just £15 how generous of them!! i disagreed with the above changes for many reasons; 1. If there are going to be changes to a club such as a take over then surely the members should have been informed either by letter (which is the general protocol) or by email or by phone. Especially if they have decided to charge children for swimming. Its not as if they are giving away freebies then of-course surprise us! I was completely in the dark to any of the above changes when i brought my children there this afternoon,it felt like an ambush; i either had to pay up or send my kids home those were my options. Oh yes, the receptionist did tell me the previous afternoon (saturday 8th) as i entered the club with my children for our 20 minute short swim that they were not members. He did not expand on this and i foolishly didn't ask him to. i mean why would i. There has been no correspondence regarding any changes. 2. My two year old have just recently being diagnosed with Rett Syndrome. This is a neurological disorder which affects normal healthy girls from around 12 months. Then a pattern of regression sets in which robes them of the ability to walk, talk or any chance of leading an independent life. One of the main treatments is hydrotherapy and that is why i take my little girl to swim and the older boy comes with me because there is no childcare my husband needs to work and also because he will enjoy a short swim. Because of her condition we stay no more then 20 minutes in the pool. I can not see a why i should pay on top of what is already a very expensive adult monthly membership as well as this new charge for a 20 minute swim with my children. 3. Due to the ever busy swimming classes throughout the entire working week at this club, leaving no time for normal family swimming in the baby pool, i can only take my children at weekends. And i am certain that this situation is the same for most families, that is why everyone only gets a puddle of water to splash around in but yet Esporta/VIrgin Active wants us to pay extra for this liberty. 4. As a mother of two (with one child who needs 24 hour care) i am lucky if i get to use the club once a week - I am not complaining as motherhood is my choice. But i decided to keep my membership going purely so my daughter can get her hydrotherapy. Which seemed like an okay deal but NOT WITH THE NEW CHARGES. I would love a sensible person with a bit of intelligence to get this sorted out - and by that i mean someone at this Esporta club.

“3 months notice for cancelling membership”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Cyberman on 02/09/2011

Been with them for over 2 years and now want to cancel my membership. I thought that the cancellation period was 1 month only and the person who I spoke to at the gym by phone confirmed this. However upon going to the gym to fill out a cancellation form I was told that usually the cancellation period is 1 month but head office has to confirm this. Received a phone call 3 days later from my Esporta gym telling me that Head Office has said that my cancellation will be 3 months. I was not originally told by any of the staff members when joining that the cancellation period is 3 months but the staff have mentioned that it is stated on my contract? I find this very excessive indeed and plan to fight this in court even if necessary. I will be taking advice from trading standards and the citizens advice bureau before writing to Esporta head office as I firmly believe that a 3 month cancellation period is totally unjust and unfair.
