Good Points: Very local to me, not that busy, friendly staff, relaxed changing rooms (low lighting, plenty of room, no cleaning staff bothering you). Wide lanes in pool. Nice lounge area with tv, comfy sofas newspapers, bar, cafe.
Bad Points: Take ages to fix things or never fix them (e.g. lots of lockers out of order, one faucet on drinks fountain was broken for about two years or more, found a sunbed with a cracked pane etc.) I've reported these things, writing to them, emailing them etc, but they never respond.Swimming pool is not always clean especially in the evenings and I've suffered from skin reactions from the water there and from the shower water in the past. Swimming pool was closed for weeks last year for refurbishment of drains. When reopened looked exactly the same. No pool attendants unless children are swimming. Hooks by sauna and steam room broke and have not been replaced. Steam room now has bright white lights despite members complaining about this. Used to have multicoloured lights but when they went out were never fixed. I never go it there now because it's too bright.Nice sauna but again if something breaks they take ages to replace it. They used to have headrests but when they broke they were never replaced. Changing rooms - lockers broken. some toilet doors don't shut.showers - when hook inside cubicle broke it was replaced with a metal stud to close hole where hook was. Some soap dispensers covered in rust. Soap given varies. They used to have a nice one that smelt of almonds, but the one they have now is fruity and a bit strong. Parking - difficult in the day time. Some annoying person who works at the club parks their car right by the entrance (not a parking spot) making it really difficult to reverse into the first parking space. People get very aggressive trying to bag one of the few parking spaces. The area has resident parking permits so you have to wait for someone to leave the car park or park miles away. There is an area that could fit in two more cars reserved for bikes.
General comments: I used to be a member of holmes place and this was a vast improvement (and still is because I went to have a look a while back and holmes place was a nightmare - very busy and crowded, cleaners constanty getting in the way in the change rooms, arrogant attitude of staff etc). Cannons still has nice staff, but they don't seem to care about member problems too much which is a pity. When I first joined cannons it was much nicer but it has deteriorated over the years. Mainly because they don't bother to fix and replace things. If a new local gym opened with similar facilities I would change. I had to go to swiss cottage leisure centre last year when my cannons closed its pool and was impressed with how good the facilities are there (a local authority pool). The water was cleaner too and they had loads of lifeguards on duty making sure people took showers. I'd expect a private health club to have better facilities than a public one.

I had to cancel my membership. Because my email to them was on the second of the month, they are charging me for this month's membership, and next month's which I cannot use. I called up expecting common sense, decency and fairness to prevail - I simply wasn't aware of the onerous cancellation policy. I mean, a month's notice usually means four weeks - not more than seven weeks. They were completely unhelpful. I asked if might use the other month when I returned from abroad? No. Might I give it t ...

Cannon's Surbiton is not very good in my opinion. A beatiful building that has been let go by the current occupants. Place got flooded earlier in the year and most of the rooms were unusable for weeks. Toilets are pretty shoddy, showers are not well maintained, lockers are broken and don't get repaired for weeks. The bar area looks shabby and cheap even though its had an insurance paid upgrade after the flood. Staff wander around looking gormless or staring at the eye candy and the managers have ...

I joined Cannons West Byfleet in Jan 07 and after a few months I was made redundant. I called the Club to ask them if I could cancel my membership. They said no. I asked them if there was a way I could freeze it and they categorically said under no circumstances could I cancel it. In Dec 07, a month before my 1 year contract was due to end, I called the club to ask if I needed to do anything to cancel my membership, or would it just expire. They said I had to give 30 days notice. I wrote to th ...

I decided to leave Cannons after a suffering succession of leary male fitness instructors. I was gyming 3-4 times a week and found that the only fitness instructors on the floor were male and they spent their time chatting up female gym members rather than actually doing anything helpful. The only time I did approach one regarding an equipment enquiry he was dismissive and told me to ask someone else.

facilities were good, and the local beautiful (by the river) but unaccessible by public transport. The girl who did my fitness plan couldn't give me any specific exercise for my bad back, despite telling her that this was the main reason for signing up. In July I paid £62 and was able to attend just two pilates classes because the studio was flooded. While floods are beyond anyone's control, the management didn't organise any contingency plan, like issuing vouchers to temporarily attend cl ...

All health and leisure clubs seem to score badly and their is room for improvement in the way they manage the expectations of members and respond to their suggestions. But from my experience Cannons provides the best value for money and you get what you pay for.

Trying to cancel my membership but it is impossible!
I went to the club yesterday and they said the employee i needed to talk to had gone home but she would contact me today....
She has not called... Called the club in the morning and she was in a meeting.... Tried to speak to someone else but I heard he saying to the receptionist to say that he was not there! What an absurd!
I cant believe this!
I'll never join this club again!

I tried to cancel my membership (posted a letter in January), but they claimed they didn't receive my original letter. Because I supposedly didn't give 30 days' written notice, I'm being forced to pay another month for a membership I'm not using. My four attempts to contact Cannons about this have been completely ignored. They'll take your money, but God forbid if you actually want to enter into a conversation about something. Worse than useless.

My husband joined me on the basis of using the swimming pool, although he did not specify on joining this. The day he signed me he was shown around by a senior member of staff starting from the pool and there was no mention on this being closed from the following week for 4 weeks!!!
On my first visit the swimming normal and nobody and nothing where warning of this major disruption until on my second visit I was told "Ehm, no, the pool will be closed for 4 weeks" When I said I joined specifical ...

Overall, Cannons is one of the most friendlist health clubs I have ever joined, none of the imposing body builders to deal with, and staff that genuinely want to help.

Support your local council sports centre and go there rather than Cannons Health Clubs. As with most gyms when it comes to customer service and trying to cancel they hit you with Terms and Conditions. I missed giving 1 full calendar notice by a few days and they are adamant that they want their 55 quid for a month I cannot use as I'm no longer in the area. Good facilities but conditons are not flexible for temporary contract workers such as myself. Note I found Virgin Gyms to be much more gear ...

Overall I will not recommend Cannons.Customer service is not good at all. Swimming pools are very small, and have lots of time restrictions.
