“Reed's PC Madness”

Written on: 16/06/2013

Do not waste your time placing vacancies with Reed Recruitment. Having offered someone a job, a Reed employee suggested meeting for breakfast; the successful job hunter said he would buy the bacon sandwiches, at which point he was accused of making an offensive remark and fired. The Reed employee it would seem was a Moslem! Newsflash! Bacon sarnies are a staple of the British breakfast. Clearly Reed are trying to drum up business in the wrong country. (read more)

Written on: 08/06/2013 by garagelover

I applied to several jobs on Reed. I have then been invited in a London branch to be interviewed for a position at Company A. At that point I was given a letter which stated that if company A would not hire me, Reed would secure me a new job within a few weeks, and they would have written a marketing plan to make sure this would happen. Nearly 6 weeks have now passed, company A didn't accept to see me and NO ONE at Reed ever called me for a job position.I have even phoned them a couple of... (read more)

I left the Army in Dec 2012 on the Tranche 3 Redundancy Package and registered with Reed soon after. After applying for numerous positions with no feed back at all I spoke to someone in the Middlesbrough Branch who informed me that civilian employers would not employ ex-forces as they cannot think for themselves and require constant supervision. I have wasted a large amount of time, effort and energy trying to sign up and apply for potential jobs via REED. The people that I have dealt with have been unprofessional, rude and inefficient. Despite having agreed to a position, Reed took almost a week to get back to me to do reference checks, partly due to the fact that they couldn't find my email...which was on the first page of my CV!!! Because my referees are located overseas, they weren't able to call and required written references...which they took 2 weeks to notify me of. I was and am still on their books, as a temp, they do not reply to your emails, when ever I leave a message for my consultant to call me back she does not.

My timesheets are constantly messed up by them, when a job is about to finish, I would not be informed.

It has been well over a week since the Reed consultant in Chancery Lane in London has got back to me, after I have left so many telephone messages and emails, for her to get back to me.

The worst thing is, she knows I am a single parent with three kids, I am the one who is not earning any money, what do I do now, do I go on state benefits, call in my P45. I can't win either way.

And no they do not do their job properly, it is not what I call a great service.

“Fake job adverts (I rang the employer)”

Written on: 07/12/2012 by Sipsosweetly (1 review written)

Yesterday reed.co.uk put out a new advert for a new job in my field. For me, it seemed perfect. So I set about updating my CV, writing the cover letter etc. Then I read a couple of reviews of Reed and their practice of advertising fake jobs... So I rang the employer (wasn't difficult to work out who is was). They confirmed the job was with them, but the closing date was a fortnight ago, interviews had taken place and successful candidate hired. Moreover, recruitment had never been... (read more)

Bill35's Response to Sipsosweetly's Review

Written on: 08/12/2012

I have to agree with this, most of the jobs Reed post seem to be fake adverts posted by agencies -- when I did a search, out of 2439 jobs within 30 miles from me, 2153 were posted by agencies (including Reed themselves, which I presume count as an agency). Realistically, I am sure most employers choose not to use agencies (it's totally unnecessary now), yet agencies seem to be posting billions of jobs but real employers don't seem to be posting nearly any jobs themselves!

In the newspapers -- nearly no jobs from agencies, and only a few jobs from real employers. Why? Because agencies don't post fake adverts in newspapers, they only do online, and on Reed it looks to be rampant.

I've reported numerous fake jobs myself. Rarely do they take them down.

When I resorted to filtering by 'employer', I even found that some of those remaining were even just agencies filing themselves in the wrong category (possibly deliberately)

Funny that at this Christmas period, Reed still seem to have tens of thousands of jobs available too, and most are posted by agencies...

Absolutely appalling. Why do they believe it is acceptable to lie to people? When you see the wages of these "consultants" the standard of conduct is particularly difficult to square off with other professions or the work the MUCH less paid temps are actually doing. It is the temps, not the consultants, that create growth and sustain the income of Reed, yet they receive no rights, no system of progression or promotion, even after years of proven ability with them, and have to put up with low wages, job insecurity, difficult conditions, and over time, a worsening CV with lowering income expectations that damages your career outside of Reed, and no income between work and no redundancy pay for all that. It is astounding. But worse, these people can choose to operate unaccountably and slander you to other agencies based on their own misunderstandings. You are disadvantaged when going for security work because of all the gaps in employment. There seems to be no benefit in trying to 'build a career' with them and and a very high chance of it leaving you exhausted, low in confidence, of reduced income expectations, damage to your career prospects and earning potential, and even severe damage caused by immature and malicious individuals working at the various branches, or because of your weak position to challenge, at the clients workplace, where bullies may report unfairly and inaccurately on you. This happened to me after a number of years working with Reed, and it caused me to be excluded from work opportunities, and when I complained, I was abused in front of all the staff at the branch. The company is frankly unbelievable.

How do they think it is acceptable to lead people on and lie to them like this? I am experienced and had worked many years with Reed, until I realised the harm it was doing to my career, especially this year when only very short term, difficult and low paid work was made available, where minimum periods for work wasn't even provided to me. The stress I experienced financially was harmful to me and made the work much more difficult still. One of these clients, in spite of never speaking to me or seeing me at work (she had never been there during my placement), complained about me for an extremely trivial reason, and subsequently, in spite of years of work without complaints, I received no more work and became aware I was being lied to and mislead by the Reed manager who was new. Because of that it took a long time to realise that they were excluding me and as such I became more in debt, and more depressed. The result appears to have caused extreme harm to me financially this year. Worse, because I legitimately complained about the situation / being lied to and excluded from opportunities, I now suspected I would not receive a satisfactory reference or even a reference, and that contact from other agencies which I have signed up with since may have involved slander against me resulting in further harm. That part is hard to prove but the situation is not improbable given the nature of some staff there and glib / hostile attitudes they have demonstrated to me. What right do they have to behave to others this way?

Occasionally you do get an email sating that you have been unsuccessful in this position, and to keep on checking Reed.co.uk! This to me implies they do not read your CV or cover letter! I would avoid using this site as its depressing and will not get you a job. (read more)

“Good breadth of industries”

Written on: 15/07/2012

Reed offers a good breadth of industries across a large proportion of the UK. I have found a variety of different jobs to apply for and their website allows for quick application to vacancies. The search options allow you to narrow your search by keywords, industry, location, title and min or max salary. On the negative side I would say that they seem to have a lot of large companies advertised rather than smaller companies or charities. (read more)

“Can't organize a P. up in a brewery”

It would be nice if I could speak with someone with a brain! You just get silly girls on the other end who have these irritating voices and you feel you are talking to nobody. I have had a few calls from Reed and have applied for numerous jobs I never get a response. If a miracle happens and I'm unlucky enough to miss a phone call I ring back and the person on the other end is never available and does not ring back even if I have to call a few times. Try to avoid dealing with Natalie... (read more)

“waste of time”

Written on: 08/07/2012

I agree with all the negative reviews I have read so far. They told me to send my cv online, after 10 days I walked in and I found out that they didn't even read it! So the woman, even before opening my cv, told me they didn't have any vacancies at the moment. I thought: "wait a minute, if an employment agency doesn't have any vacancies, who does? It is a waste of time, the only thing they do is to overload your mailbox with useless junk emails. (read more)

“I'd give it ZERO stars if possible!!!!”

Written on: 05/07/2012

Useless, time wasting, lying, cheating, manipulative, how many more adjectives can I find to describe this company!!!! They pray on people like me who have found themselves out of work and getting desperate to find a job. It's an emotional rollercoaster as it is without companies like this adding to worries. All the jobs I applied for when I now find I could have gone direct mad me seeth, and after 60 applications that I was qualified to do I have not even had 1 interview, avoid Reading... (read more)

Having read many of the reviews it highlights how incompetent the majority of the personnel working in recruitment agencies are.

First and foremost i do not condone their actions but every second job advertised is for a recruitment consultant, highlighting that first you do not have to hold any qualifications but just desperate for work.

The reading branch especially (name removed) has mastered the art of deceit has he fits all the criteria in every review.

These type of people are lynches advertise jobs that do not exist, they look on websites like B&Q then advertise the job that is already advertised , what is common now is they say no recruitment agencies as employers are sick of them as much as we are.

What is clear is people like (name removed) and his silly little girls will soon be looking for work and be in the same boat.

(Name removed) thinks we are all as deceitful as him but clear we are a lot more educated than him as it took me minutes to realise he was not telling the truth and could not offer anything.

I will be writing to my local MP about him and the agency he works for as they waste people time falsely advertising jobs they clearly do not have, this is illegal despite they think they are untouchable.

Please remember that name (name removed) and do not waste your time even giving him your name.

“Job vacancies do not exist. Don't bother !”

Written on: 29/06/2012

I have been trying for the last four years to acquire employment with www.reed.co.uk. I have a Masters degree but have gone from applying for executive positions to cleaners position in order to get up from seeking unemployment benefits. All of my applications came back either unanswered or with the usual generic note that says "this time your were not accepted". Please do not bother even applying. It takes loads of time to fill out an application these days. These agencies should be shut down. (read more)

Once again, agencies do not operate like this! I am a seasoned recruiter with 14 years under my belt and, quite simply, agencies work with the most suitable people for the role based on client demands. It's in our interests as much as yours to find the best people based on our clients and submit them but the client, and thats the crucial bit, makes the final decision on who goes through. Remember, this is a free service to you of which thousands are very happy every year with the incredible hard work this role takes, I would know...while I sympathise with your situation, your comment is irrational and silly and you shouldn't give up. Go see an agency - in person!!

“Good if you want to waste time”

Written on: 22/06/2012 by prest

I wouldn't recommend Reed to a single person. After applying for about 50 jobs, and sending follow up emails after I heard nothing, I received a reply saying as I lack experience in that sector my applications were pretty much pointless. This is even though the roles I applied for were entry level positions where some even said no experience necessary. Got a feeling that they just use the 'do you have experience' question to filter people out without even looking at the cover letter or cv I... (read more)

“Very Unprofessional ”

Written on: 20/06/2012

I first heard about reed when the agency started up for the first time in a department in my local college. Of which they forced every student to go to an introductory session during a normal lesson and encouraged us "it was the best way to get help and assistance with finding a job as hard as it is during these times". Seems like a charade to be perfectly honest I have attended a few regular meetings, applied for dozens of jobs and tried to keep up to date and in contact via email, text and... (read more)
