I won't recommend to anyone. Hardly 4 washes and the color is gone. There is lot of hairfall and too much of dry hair. Not worth the price it is sold for.

I have never had any problems with blond dyes but with this Revlon product i'm itching everywhere, started on scalp and now my neck, ears and so the list continues... am now using a antihistamine. Going back to using Lóreal. Do not buy Revlon ammonia free dye!

We usually use L'oreal haircolor. My sister and I thought we would try this one, since it was cheaper, and no ammonia. From the moment my sister put it on my scalp, it felt a little tingly, and then started to sting and burn slightly. The stinging worsened as time went by, but I toughed it out. Stupid decision. I really shouldn't have. The color looked ok, but really stained the scalp, more than other hair colors in the past. Also, tiny red spots appeared on my scalp, where the stinging had been. My scalp was also so sore and itchy. This pain was pretty bad for about a week, and is now starting to subside, but my scalp is still itchy. My sister said she could see dandruff on the scalp, when the pain and itch was at its worst. She experienced the same thing, but to a lesser degree. I used the blue/black, and she used the natural black. Our hair is so dry now, and feels damaged. Not to mention what it's done to our scalps. I can actually feel bumps on my scalp. We will never use this hair color again.

My hair has always been really shiny, flexible, and soft! Now after using this hair dye it became dull, brittle, and dry. Not to mention it's not very effective hair dye either. NEVER using this brand ever again! I hope my hair recovers from this. Such a waste!

So I gave in and fell for the cheap stuff....now 8 weeks later I am still paying for it. My hair before Colorsilk was healthy, soft and wavy/curly. It held curl when I would used my big curling iron and had tons of shine and volume. Now after Colorsilk, when I wash it and rinse it feels gummy and matted. I have to use 2 or 3 handfuls of conditioner just to get it separated and rinsed. I also have to use quite a few sprays of leave on conditioner just to be able to get a brush through it after washing. When wet it is straight, flat, thin. As it is drying it simply frizzes and as I am styling it no longer holds curl. It feels like nylon doll hair that has been laying in a box in the attic for years-matted, frizzy, damaged. I should have read reviews before purchasing...but to be quite honest a lot of customers out there gives it great reviews. I do not understand how I got so "lucky".

I purchased a box of Revlon ColorSilk #31 (dark auburn). I had previously used Revlon Colorsilk Black, so effectively the colour should have come out a dark auburn, according to the box. However, on application and rinsing- my roots turned out bright orange and the rest of the head did not take the colour : so orange roots and black hair the rest of the way down. Did the chemicals perhaps get mixed up? Were they off? Did they use a stripper chemical by mistake?
I did this on a Sunday evening so have had to arrive at work Monday morning looking like this until I can get to the shops. I have taken photos and kept the box and what was left of the colour mix. However, both the international and SA Revolon sites do not have direct email addresses to correspond with them - merely a fill-in form.
What has happened to such a well-known and usually well-liked brand? I know I won't be purchasing it again.

Hello,
I am sorry to hear about your hair. I am not a stylist but I have experience with this. I used to color my hair blue black. The problem with coloring your hair black is you have to go through a process to get it lightened. You either have to bleach it or put in highlights(bleaching) or wait until your hair grows out or you can get a wig until it grows out. I would go to a salon and have them do a color correction so you don't damage your hair because basically that is what you will need to do. Good luck!!

NO, You can't lift color with color. Your roots lightened because they are close to your scalp and receive more body heat and have less dye on them.

I couldn't give it but 1 star. I am standing at the market picking up my usual hair dye when the $2.50 for Revlon Colorsilk caught my eye. I got on my phone and read these reviews. So many great consistent reviews and a few about leaving hair like straw. SInce nothing has ever left my hair with a bad texture I picked up a box.
Got home and followed the directions. Same as the usual hair dyes, but shorter time to leave on the dye. So here I am 2 hours later and my naturally curly/wavy hair is drying and my hair is dry, fuzzy and showing gray.
The state of my hair before coloring: Soft curls/waves. Lots of volume and lift. Color has faded from dark brown to Medium brown with Auburn highlights.
Reason for coloring.. It had about 1/2 inch of roots showing. Not needing a dye job just yet, but thought I would do it now before the hectic holiday schedule.
My hair after coloring: Stiff, frizzy, flat, dull. Grey is now showing through and wirey so its sticking up from my head. Some grey on entire strand of hair. Other grey strands are striped from all color. Looking thru my hair I see white flakes indicating that my scalp is now dry.
I wasted $3 and 2 hours of my time. Going back to my usual brand.

oh yes, following my previous review of how much i DIDN'T like this product, the gloves provided too were rubbish! it tore and broke while i was trying to put them on! and that left my hands stained for awhile.... the probably only good thing about this was that there's no ammonia to sting the eyes.. but still smells pretty bad. and colour dropped right after i washed the first time! stained my towel. geesh!

This Revlon Colorsilk haircolor is the worst product I ever put in my hair. It damaged my scalp, it broke my hair off and made my hair brittle. I would not recommend this product. The end result color was brassy.

I tried Revlon Colorsilk (soft black) for the first time and will NEVER use it again. It completely stained my porcelain bathtub and painted walls. Then when I called Revlon for help all they said was that they had never tested it on anything other than hair and there was nothing they could do. I have used other hair dye brands before and this has never happened--similar colors too. Had they responded differently (i.e. more sympathetic and helpful rather than defensive and annoyed) I wouldn't have been so upset. I should mention it was on sale for $1.99. I guess that should've been a tip-off.

with all due respect, porcelain is porous-any rich color will stain it.... i have a hard time believing that any other brands of dark color easily came out of it... & how did you manage to get it all over your walls?? revlon has always been a great product (& i have been everywhere from all blonds-my natural haircolor to dark brown). the color has been great, the price is very affordable & a bonus-revlon does not test on animals.

dium brown hair with some grays. I just used Revlon Colorsilk 40- Medium Ashbrown for the second time, since last week since the first time it didn't cover the gray hairs. I waited for over and hour, so that's more than enough with other brands I always use. Now after the 2nd time there's a little better gray coverage, but they're still visible to the eye. Waited an hr like last time. I'm extremely disappointed wit this product. Plus the ash brown looks coppery. I use "ash" brown to avoid the copper/orange/red tones, but now my hair looks copper brown. Terrible product.

I used Revlon Colorsilk Light Brown. At first, it colored my grey hairs, 2 weeks later the grey hairs stuck out like sore thumbs on my head. I'll never use it again.

I have just put my second bottle on in the past week. I thought I may have needed to leave it on longer with stubborn grey. I have just colored my hair and even wet I can see the grey in my hair part has not covered well. I am no amature and have colored my hair for over 30 years and every time I try Revlon Colorsilk Ammonia Free the results are just bad. Now tomorrow I have to go buy another brand.

I had the same experience with Revlon Colorsilk Ammonia Free as mguinnette: brown hair, used medium ash blonde, got nothing. I was stunned.
Since mguinnette and I had the same experience, maybe it's something to do with the #70 medium ash blonde. If you have brown hair, I do not recommend it.
written by mguinnette on 02/01/2008
I tested the color on my hair twice with this product. I had light to medium brown hair and got medium ash Blonde Revlon color. It didn't take at all! I followed the instructions to the letter. I even did it twice (once on both sides) and left it on longer a second time to see if it would take. Didn't notice one bit of difference. You would think I would see something? I'll never recommend this product It didn't even cover the Grey.

I have switched to a different brand which has the reliable ammonia formula.
Colorsilk changed it's formula to exclude ammonia, but to add peroxide. I had used the original formula for years and was very satisfied. I was not aware of the change in formula, and I recently wondered why my hair looked and felt so awful - flat, dry, dull and lifeless. I also could not understand why the color didn't last and became brassy after one wash. I eliminated hormones, lack of sleep and diet etc. as the cause. It is the reformulated product. THE NEW PRODUCT ONLY COVERS GRAY WHEN FIRST APPLIED.

You Must Be Pretty Old To Remember When ColorSilk® had Ammonia. They changed the formula back ln the late 1970's. As for the Peroxide, they've ALWAYS had Peroxide in permanent hair colors. It couldn't work without it.

After dying my hair 6 months ago from blonde to dark brown, my hair stayed brown and I wanted my blonde back, so I tried Revlon Colorsilk Ammonia Free Champagne Blonde. It was only $3.99 at Walgreen's. That is about $3.00 more than it is worth. My hair is now light brown. I even left it in for an extra 7 minutes. Next time I will buy the pricey dye, maybe it will work better.

Regarding your review about Revlon Colorsilk Ammonia Free. My advice would be that you should NEVER try removing a darker shade with hair color, as It ALMOST NEVER works! No matter which brand you use. Always Remove the existing color with a product especially made for removing hair color.

I have been using Clairol Hydrience for years with good results, but I wanted to buy hair color from a company that does not test on animals, so I tried Light Reddish Brown from Revlon. I was pleased with the low price, but now I see why it is so cheap. My hair turned out WAY darker than on the box, and the ends have no shine whatsoever. It is kind of straw-like. I'm sure it will fade out fairly quickly, and I will probably go back to the Hydrience since it has always worked for me.

I've been dying my hair for years, and never have I ever been as unsatisfied as I am with Revlon Colorsilk hair colour. I had nice healthy shiny hair, and now it's dull and straw like.

wish i had seen this comment BEFORE i used it! my once shiny long sofy hair is now very dry, feels like straw, is snapping off and very brittle. I always use nice and easy but seen this on offer so thought "why not"? I used it on my roots first for 10mins, then all over my longer hair for 10 mins. Glad i didnt leave it on any longer! as soon as i rinsed i could feel the difference. Yes i blow dry, yes, i straighten but my once lovely hair is not straw like and will need to a good few inches off :-(
