Heddan99. Thanks for the information. It turned an otherwise impossible job into something simple and low cost. £5 for a set of Torx screwdrivers, 67p for the caps. and about an hours time. I was dreading getting in touch with Philips as I find their customer service totally unhelpful. We've had the 32pf9964 for 7 years without problems until now. Reasonably happy but the sound quality is poor. Thanks again.

42" phillips plasma, would try to start up then light would flash and go off again. Took back off and in the middle you will see 3 blue boxes, we tapped the one in the middle with a hammer and the tv started up and has been running as normal ever since.
People try to say it is the capacitors which didnt work with us, this certainly worked, please try it, you are probably thinking I have a screw loose, but trust me it works, or at least it did for us.

We actually have a 42PF9964 (apparently exactly the same build as the 32PF9964) which we purchased from Sevenoaks Sound and Vision in January 2003, for just under £4,300, and have experienced exactly the same problem.

The problem first occurred early in 2005 and eventually rendered the set unusable in April of that year.

When I first contacted the Manager of the shop from whom I purchased the unit he said that he would speak to Philips and get somebody there to contact me - This neve ...

If you have this problem with your Philips 32PF9964: When I switch the TV on, it appears as though it is going to start i.e the green light comes on, then after about 10 seconds it switches itself off and the standby light flashes red. It takes 10 /12 times before it starts and is getting worse.
    This is the solution:
    The problem is three caps.
    Change the cap 2663, 2664 both 100 /25V
and 2662,1000 /25V. After you have changed them your TV will work again.
You will find them easy if you unsc ...

Having read the other reviews it seems the switch problem, with the Philips 32PF9964, has come back to haunt us too. The other two problems were sorted just inside the original 2 year guarantee, service was as experienced by the other two - on hold, not called back, in for 3 & 4 weeks = Poor.
We've had it for 3yrs 10mths, average use, would've expected it to last 5/6 years. Won't be buying Philips next time.

The goods points, unfortunately, are completely overshadowed by the seriousness of the switch problem, which renders the Philips 32PF9964 completely useless because it will not stay on or it refuses to start at all.

The service centre, probably contracted out, seem to know about the problem and offer to fix it, out of warranty, for a few hundred pounds, including collection and delivery.

Overall a very good product completely ruined by a few sub-standard components.

The Philips 32PF9964 flat screen TV has an inbuilt fault which Philips are aware of, but seem unable or unwilling to repair permanently. A defect in the On/Off control causes the monitor to repeatedly switch itself off. The couriers tell us this is the most common fault with these systems and although Philips have resolved this in their latest models they are not putting the new switches into older models that are returned to them for repair. In less than 2 years the switch on our system has h ...
