    Good Points: None

Bad Points: High interest rates, poor customer service.

General comments: Started with Providian at 17percent interest, was changed to emerge who promptly raised interest to 29.97 percent. I have never been late or over limit and after 3 years they refuse to lower the interest. I can only afford to pay 100 dollars a month and with interest of 75 dollars a month, it will take forever to pay off.

I had a Providian account that I closed and paid off, around the time of the switch several years ago. As of November 2005 I have Emerge on my credit report showing a collection account in the amount of $1325. I have no idea where that came from, and I am still trying to get documents or any information.

I had a Providian credit card that was sold to E-merge. It has been a total disaster since. No web site. Customer service sucks. With a $2,000.00 balance after 6 years, I am still trying to pay this off, with something like 24% APR, plus an $89.00 annual fee ... both aspects that were NEVER part of my agreements with Providian.

I received a Providian credit card in 1996. I used it frequently, and I never had any problems. In 1999 I received an "Emerge Credit card", from the company who were replacing Providian. I received only the "new card" in the mail, never anything else. I had a $2,000 credit line with Providian, and my balance was $1000. I have "never" used this card, but when I was making my payments, I noticed that I was receiving an "over limit" fee, which are not cheap. I also noticed that my interest ra ...

Upon death, they require impossible documentation beyond the death certificate. After submitting documentation they tell you that insurance is "accidental death", and if the applicant was not killed in an "accident" it is not considered payable. There is nothing of this statement in their application. The Providian Emerge credit card application states that insurance coverage is for death.

Providian Emerge are pathetic as far as credit card companies go. When it was Providian it was fine, but then when Emerge took over, they closed my account (it was in good standing), raised the rate to over 20%, and then when I called, they said there was nothing they could do about it.

Like mostly everyone here, I originally had a Providian credit card account. It was with a $500 credit limit at 14% interest in 2000. After 2 months I started receiving phone calls and letters about special offers that would increase my credit limit. Of course, I accepted these offers. Now my credit limit is $2000. Everything was fine until I received a new card in the mail called "Emerge". I was told that my Providian card was no longer active and this would be my new card. Well, let the ga ...

Providian Emerge charged me for an annual credit card fee that they never disclosed! They told me that they would take off the charge for the annual fee and cancel the card. They cancelled the card, but they left the charge on there!! Now I'm being charged a late fee! This company has no scruples! I will be taking it further.

Just 1 month after being 18 (I am now 23, 24 in July) I received my first credit card. It was an Emerge visa from Providian. They cancelled the card three months later due to late payments. Except, to my knowledge and according to Equifax, Experian, and Transunion, I have never been late in my life. Now it is 5 years (almost 6) later, and I am still getting a monthly bill for a $1000 credit card that has been closed for five years. I call them about once a year to see if they would re-open t ...

I was with Providian for a good amount of time. Just starting my credit I was just happy to get a card. I, as many of the reviews here, got hit with the over limit fees for the extra programs they sell. They tell you they will increase your credit line. All of a sudden I am at 30% interest. I was told in a year "we will review your account for a rate reduction". When that year came around my account was "sold" to Emerge. Now they say "too bad, you get no review". On my bill I noticed Providian N ...

I'm sorry to hear your stories. I've been with the Providian Emerge credit card for over 10 years! First it was FNANB Visa, then Fleet, and now eMerge. I called them in India, and they also hung up on me! They reported that I have all three cards on my credit report and I called to get it taken off with no luck yet!

I had been paying my Providian Emerge credit card off since I dropped their card several years ago. I was paying through a credit service. Emerge asked me to drop the credit service and I would not be charged interest on the balance remaining. They were to take out of my checking account the payment every month. Now I find out that they have no record of the deal I made with them, even though I had upheld my end of the deal and dropped the credit service that I had been paying them every month. ...

Just like many other people, I had a fleet credit card for a long time, and along came Providian Emerge, and with it came all the problems of having to deal with people in some remote place - no office to visit or a caring person to talk with. For over Three months now I show a credit balance of over $3000 on my account because I send a payment of $4000. I have been requesting the refund from Emerge, and every time I call the India office, I get a new person to tell me a new reason as to why t ...

My story is like everyone else's. I had two Providian credit cards, which I had to close because they kept charging me over the limit fees for items they were adding. I actually closed the last one mainly because of that. Not to mention they did not want to adjust the interest rate. To top it off, I tried consolidating with Ameridebt, another story in itself, and although the payments were supposed to be coming from the company, they kept calling me, so I fell into hard times and let it lapse. Thanks to all of you who have written reviews about Providian. I received two cards in the mail yesterday and decided to read reviews first. After reading just a few I cut up the cards and threw them in the trash. Thank you for sparing me a BIG headache, I am very grateful.

My story is like many others...had a card with another company for 9 years and then it was sold to Fleet. Within 7 months I had a brand new card called Providian Emerge Credit Card. They jacked my interest rate up to 29.9% and added a $100 annual fee that put me over the limit gifting them with an over the limit fee. I transferred my balance to a new card. It is reprehensible that the law allows this kind of gouging of its citizens. The fear of paying their attorney fees and what it will d ...

I had a Fleet card for years, and was always taken care of. Providian Emerge came in and bought Fleet, and jacked up my interest rate without notification, and they basically told me I could take it or leave it. They have no customer service at all, and could not care less about your business. I paid them the money they wanted, and they still cut me off, even when I had done exactly what I was supposed to have done. I'd like to have discussed this with a customer service person, but you can't ...

I had a MasterCard account that was sold to Providian Emerge, after I had closed the account. Imagine my surprise when I was informed that my "account" had been transferred. "What account, it's closed", is what I tried to get through to these people, but to no avail. Several times since then, I have obtained a copy of my credit report, only to find an account with Emerge/FNBO listed as "open", yet balance is $0 and has been for the last 3 years. Experian must be bigger idiots than Emerge by re ...

I too have had a horrible experience with this Providian Emerge Credit Card. I never receive a letter indicating the account was sold. I found out trying to use my Fleet card, which was actually sold to Fleet Bank the year prior. I've had this account for 9 yrs and eventually had to close it when they would only allow me access to $100.00 while out of town. Mind you my available credit was over $11,000.00. I immediately closed the account and asked for confirmation that the account was clos ...

Like every one else, my story is the same. We had a Fleet credit card for over 15 years and it sold to Providian Emerge. We used it for a couple of months with problems but continued to use it since it was the only card we had. We used it twice one day for small purchases and tried to use it a third time and was denied. When we called (after being on hold for 1/2 an hour and got some one who barely spoke Engish) we got no explanation as to why our card has been cancelled! So, we got a new ...
