written by ChrisSBtn on 15/01/2007

I bought this because of its fantastic styling, but soon wished I hadn't. It took me ages to get to grips with because it's so counter-intuitive and it has an absolutely pathetic camera. It seems that O2 put lots of time and money into the appearance, but recouped it by cutting corners on the actual functions. Never again will I buy an O2 phone, no matter how good it looks.

written by andyfh on 18/10/2006

The O2 OX was the worst phone I have EVER owned. I have a Sagem MY 401x on T-Mobile that was half the price of it and that has Bluetooth and all the good stuff. Where as this phone I was tricked into buying because the X1 was being recalled. It wasn't. The camera was slow, the ringtones were terrible, the battery barely lasted and hour, and barely picked up a signal in the city never mind when camping. When you turn it on it makes a funny little noise and after 30 minutes it finds o2 UK. Then you find the battery is dead and it turns off. You can't win with the phone and that is why I chucked it in the bin. That really was one terrible phone.

“Overall, I don't recommend the O2 X2 mobile phone, but...”

★★★☆☆

written by tvdw on 15/07/2006

Overall, I don't recommend the O2 X2 mobile phone, but for a business man who only uses it for talking, it is a very stylish phone.

This phone has a very stylish look to it with a mirror on the front, as well as a front mini display screen. It was easy to use and the instructions supplied sufficient information.

The camera quality was awful, as I couldn't even take a picture of someone from one side of a room to the other. Also, there was 1Mb of memory on it, which is quite pathetic. It didn't have any kind of music on it, and it broke within about 6 months of me having it. The sound didn't work, and I couldn't accept incoming calls.

I sent it away to O2, and within 3 weeks I was sent it back "fixed". However, it came back worse than before, and I now couldn't hear anything on any calls. I sent it away again and the manager at the O2 shop which I went to was VERY helpful, and he got them to give me a brand new top of the range phone which, was double the value of the x2.

“After many years of buying cheap and basic functioning...”

★★★★☆

written by Averilla on 19/10/2005

After many years of buying cheap and basic functioning phones, I realised it was merely a false economy , so decided to invest in a mid range phone that not only had the latest up to date features but a bit of style too !

So, after much browsing I decided on the O2 X2. I have always been on O2 pay as you go and as there was an O2 shop just up the road this seemed like an ideal choice as I would also have customer service on my doorstep which would save on any calls to O2 should I experience any problems.

I paid £126 for this phone in October 2004, you can get them from £90 now from most phone stores, electrical retailers and from Argos.

As I have said, this is a stylish looking clam shell phone, in silver with an external aerial. One of the first things you notice is that the front of the phone is also a mirror, very handy for us ladies, also you have the status indicator light, flashing different colours and speeds which indicate low battery, incoming calls and charging. The time is shown across the front in blue along with battery and signal strength icons, small and unobtrusive. When you flip it open there is also a silver mirror surrounding the screen, along with all the normal function keys, these glow with a rather attractive blue backlight. The 65k colour screen itself is very clear but maybe a little small for some, measuring approx 3cm x 3cm.Whilst in idle the screen will display icons for signal strength, battery life, along with the O2 operator Logo, time, date and an indication of the *profile you have chosen (*more later).

On the side of the phone you will find the volume controls which can be used during a call, and the headphone socket which is conveniently hidden behind a tiny grey pull out tab. The camera lens is located at the back of the base and has a rather handy mirror around it enabling you to take your own photo should you desire. The charger socket is located on the very bottom edge of the phone.

The overall look of this phone really appeals to me. I find it very attractive and find the displays very clear and easy to read.

The navigation buttons are very simple to use and the main menu consists of 9 colourful icons :

Messaging for standard SMS text

O2 services Wap, MMs and internet access

Calls Missed, received, cost etc

Contacts Address book

Camera Images and album

Games Downloadable from O2

Organiser Calendar, Alarm clock, To do list, Notes, Voice memo,Currency converter.

Tools Calculator, Polyphonic Ringtones, Stopwatch, Countdown timer, Memory status.

Settings Colour wallpapers, Date time, Profiles, Display, Audio, Call settings etc.

I will not bore you by telling you about every single function, I will, however go thorough some of the main ones :

TEXT MESSAGING

This is actually quite simple and you do have the option of using predictive text, however I found it to be very fiddly switching from one to the other. Also changing from and to Capital letters and punctuation is a little time consuming, unless like me, you are lazy and don't bother punctuating !!

You also have the option to send multimedia messages and are given the option to send messages using sound and pictures. You can apparently download images for this or send your own photos, however I have never had the need to use this.

CONTACTS

This is your phone book and you can store an impressive 500 numbers on the phone's memory, then you can sort them into groups i.e. Family, friends. you can then configure the ringtone for each group and even add photos so you can see at a glance who is calling. You can also add their addresses and E-mail addresses

CAMERA

I don't use this feature much, however I do personally think that they would have been better off putting the camera lens in the lid as opposed to the base of this phone, you have to tip it up at an angle to get focused. The quality of the picture is not very good either, not very clear.

You can select the light conditions, choosing from Normal, indoor, outdoor and night. The phone will then automatically adjust colour balance in order for you to take the best pictures. I did not find that this actually made an awful lot of difference, the picture quality remained poor

You have 4 different resolutions to choose from:
High 640 x 480
Med 320 x 240
Low 160 x 120
Lowest 80 x 60

You have a rather novel option of 'Face Morphing', my son loved this, you can take someone's photo and then morph it to look like a monkey or an alien, among others fun but nothing more!

I would just add that I cannot seem to store more than 8 pictures at a time, although I do have a lot of phone numbers using some memory up.

GAMES

This phone, surprisingly, does not come with any games. You have the option of downloading them from the O2 website at a cost of £2.50 each. I have downloaded a couple and found the playability and the quality of the graphics to be excellent !

RINGTONES

This is my first phone with Polyphonic ringtones and I think they are excellent. It automatically comes with a choice of 30 ringtones and 10 alert tones with the option to download more from various websites. The quality of the tones is excellent, I currently had Van Morrisons Brown Eyed Girl downloaded and it sounds lovely !!!

WALLPAPER

The phone comes with a standard 25 wallpapers, however, when this function is used it will deplete the battery time ! You can also use your own photographs as wallpaper if you choose, and also download from websites. I rarely use this function, however, when I have, the picture quality of the wallpapers is very good.

MAKING CALLS

This is very straightforward and, as with most phones, you can configure your soft keys to bring up the phone book and use as a short cut. The clarity of calls is excellent with no background noise or crackling whatsoever. You have the facility to mute the calls for privacy too !! Reception has always been excellent with no problems.

WAP ACCESS

I rarely use this facility as it does cost more than making calls, however, if you access O2 Active services via WAP (standard setting for O2) then you will find an absolute treasure trove of information and downloads, special offers too. I have used this service a few times and found it simple and very quick to use.

PROFILES

This is the bit I like. You can configure your settings to determine how you will be alerted to an incoming call, whether ring tone or vibrating alert. The options are as follows:

Normal

Meeting...........no audible tones, vibrate only

Outdoors.........This sets the phone to the loudest volume

Headset...........Particularly for use with a hands free set

Personal..........Your own personalised profile, whatever setting you want.

You can set whichever ringtone you want for each profile, and adjust the profiles as necessary

As with most phones you can adjust the brightness, contrast, volume on the phone easily. You can also decide how long you want the backlight to stay lit once the flip is open and there is a power save option which turns lights and displays off after a certain period of time, to preserve battery life

TECHNICAL DATA

Size H81 x W44 x D21 (mm)
Weight 89g
Talk time 2 - 3.5 hours
Standby time 80 - 170 hours
Display 65k colour 128 x 128 pixels
Band Tri band

Overall I love this little phone, it is small, compact, neat and very smart to look at. The functions are all very easy to use and I have, so far, had no problems with it at all ! I have dropped it a couple of times and it has proved to be very robust with only a couple of tiny scratches.

One downside is that although standby time is supposed to be at least 80 hours as above, I have found after nearly a year, that the longest standby time I get is a little over 50 hours. It is possibly that this is due to me charging the battery often before it is completely discharged........something they do advise against.

I would recommend this phone to anyone who is not particularly looking for a camera phone, but wants a stylish functional accessory !

Overall 8 out of 10

This phone is Rubbish, I only got it because it was about £150 which WAS a good price, but after about a week I found out that the camera was rubbish, it has low memory status and the battery life is v poor. It only lasts about 1 and a half days on standby.

Do not get this phone get the E720 or X4.

Stay away from this phone!! I bought an X1 and had to send it back because the battery kept losing it's charge. They sent me X2 model and that was OK for a few months but I have had to send it back twice in the last 2 months for same thing and now it is starting again. Won't hold battery charge, won't let me access phone book either in contacts or from messages, doesn't send me my messages for days and when I change my sim to another phone get them through OK. This phone might look nice but is the worst thing I have ever bought and I am currently in contact with O2 customer care to sort it out.

The O2X2 has a really bad battery life no matter how much you charge it, it only lasts 2 days on standby, and not even half a day if you use it to text or make any calls. I found that the camera quality is extremely poor and so are the features! I also took my phone to America and I thought it was gonna work since it says it's a tri-band phone on the box and I had phoned up the network to let them know that I was going away. The software also kept crashing and I found I had to take out the bettery a lot to reset the handset. It also took a while to start up once turned on. All in all the handset is extremely poor and my advice is not to buy if you are thinking of it! Trust me it's not a good investment!

I bought the O2 X2 2 months ago, and thought the phone was great-good design, I liked the flashing light and outer display. Had decent ringtones, I could download wallpapers. However, Immediately I noticed problems. I was unable to send pictures via MMs. contacted O2 they told me to ring cust. services, however I was not willing to pay 50p/min to be told there was nothing they could do. They then told me there was no way of forwarding my query to their technical team. Then a few weeks later, due to the ever so poor battery life, my phone went dead. I charged it up, and after this was unable to access my contacts as "waiting" was displayed forever. After a few days this returned to normal, but I have to make sure I keep my phone turned on, otherwise it won't work for a few days. I think the O2 X range phones need to be taken off the market before they send O2 bankrupt just like BT Cellnet went. They really need to work on their software problems-after looking on internet have seen many other people are experiencing the same problems, and many problems were also experienced with the X1. Have emailed O2 but they seem reluctant to answer any direct complaint towards them.

“Bought this handset for £120 thinking I'd be pretty...”

★★★☆☆

written by desdesigner on 16/01/2005

Bought this handset for £120 thinking I'd be pretty happy at the specification and price. Boasting a 65k colour TFT screen with polyphonic ringtones and such alike with most of todays mod-cons.

Got it from O2 online and was unpleasantly surprised at the sheer lack of thought gone into producing this handset. The menu hasn't been thought through as the icon selection fades in and you still fail to see which icon you have actually selected.

The camera isn't too bad in bright, outdoor conditions, however, place the handsets camera under harsh conditions such as a dimly lit room and the quality goes right out of the window.

Damn good try on behalf of O2, but the price for such a handset needs seriously changing.

For the same price, you could buy a Moto V525.

If you're not into your gadgets and you're after a light stylish handset than this is the one for you, other than that, steer clear chaps.

I had the O2 X1 and well least said about that the better and having read reviews on this handy site I discovered there was a solution and that was the O2 X2. It's a good phone but yet still lacks any amazing features apart from the face morph which has givern my freinds and I hours of fun. It is a good phone for someone who just wants it to make calls, send sms, take photos. Although the camera isn't great it is reasonable and the screen quality is good. The only BUT is the lack of conectivity ie bluetooth or infrared which is a big loss overall though a good phone.

written by eeyore2004 on 08/11/2004

Overall the O2 X2 phone is ok. I have just 1 problem, it sometimes decides that it wants to block out the whole world! Which basically means that I can't receive or make phone calls or send or receive texts. It's done this twice in the less than 2 weeks I've had it and I can't take it back cos it was sent to me as a replacement to the O2X1 (which works a bit better than the X2!) I've checked the coverage in my area and there's nothing wrong with it at all. So unless you want to be cut off from the world stay away from this phone!!

The O2 X2 is a really good phone, but I have had some problems with it. On my second handset already. Overall it is a good phone, but it does need improvements, hence the fact they brought out the X3 only a few months after the X2.

Joy Meaton's Response to emu's Review

Written on: 11/03/2005

I am really disappointed with my X2 - love the look and feel of it but performance is not very good. Had the phone only 4 months before the calls and contacts features stopped working. It went back to the factory and now after another 3 months they're not working again. At both times when trying to access these features it makes the phone freeze so you have to turn off and back on again before it will work.

Really enjoying the O2 X2 phone, real value for money on Pay & Go. Sleek and lightweight design and easy to use though the screen is a bit small.
