Good Points: We had a good laugh with our waiters. They seemed to enjoy the fact that we were the most down-to-earth people there. The wine was also very nice as were the toilets!
Bad Points: Something lacking in the atmosphere, the food, and there was a distinct lack of value in the price.
General comments: The entrance to the Cipriani Restaurant was crammed full of people and the first impression given when you walk in, is that you should be grateful that you have been permitted entry. The bar staff were quite abrupt and shoved our chairs to the side to make room for more people to stand at the bar. The people were largely pretentious and although ridiculously wealthy, lacking a certain class and refinement. The food was a disappointment, as I was expecting authentic Italian cuisine, but instead found the tuna to be quite bland and flavourless. The gnocchi did not have the usual fine balance of basil, tomato, garlic & olive oil, which I would expect (as a minimal requirement) from a good Italian restaurant. I have eaten in many great restaurants and to me, the ambiance, the service and the food are all essential ingredients which make the dining out experience worthwhile. I am happy to pay for good food in tasteful surroundings. In this case, there was something lacking in the atmosphere, the food, and there was a distinct lack of value in the price. The wine glasses were also quite cheap looking and were not large enough to properly air the lovely red wine.
I absolutely love all things Italian but I would not re-visit Cipriani, unless I were seated next to Madonna herself!

It's like going to a theatre to watch a car crash. Addictive but quite ridiculous. The Cipriani London Italian restaurant in Mayfair has a great atmosphere. It is lively and great for people watching, but it is overpriced, the food is terrible, and many of the customers are somewhat of a questionable desirability.

After complaining to the restaurant Cipriani of my eating experience I was surprised to get an email back by none other than Arrigo Cipriani himself. Slightly bewildered and honored we continued to battle out our opinions over the internet until eventually we came to understand each other. After some lovely emails Arrigo (now 73 I believe) invited me for lunch at his restaurant in Mayfair. This time I ate what he recommended which was gorgeous. We had the prosciutto ham, home made ravioli, lamb ...
