I have brought a cracking gold gt 150 and drives like a train the shear torque and power from a 1.9 deisel is increadible. I driven some high powered motors and this car makes me smile just as much. full leather recaro, gun metal grey, big 18in wheels the car is the best iv owned. 110 mph in fourth gear now thats impressive for a deisel and gets there in no time. Bought this car from one owner a lady, i was shocked on how quick if was for a diesel. The car was chipped to 200 Bhp from 150. I think 150 is enough power. Driving this car was so smooth and comfortable no squeaks or rattles. The engine pulls like a tank through all gears and response is instant when accelerating. The mileage is now 155,000 and the fuel consumption is fantastic. I have not done a check to what miles to the gallon it does, only know that just putting a tenner in last me... (read more)

This car has been very reliable from day one and has never failed to start. The economy is amazing for a 150 hp turbo diesel engine. It does 55mpg+ on my occasional trips from Cornwall to London averaging 70 to 80mph. On a 10 mile journey, driven carefully, I once managed 80mpg. This compares very well with my 2 litre ZX Citroen which would only do about 30mpg. Strangely, the economy has improved since I first bought the car (at 10k miles) and has now improved by about 1.5 mpg at 50k. The... (read more)

I loved the car so much i bought it straight away and drove home in it that day! The interior is just so solid, well built & you instantly know your in a bit of quality engineering.
The massive power the engine produces gives you acceleration in most gears at most speeds when the engines past 1800 revs.
Im still loving every second beind the wheel & cant stop smiling every time that turbo kicks in.
All this & capable of 55+ mpg if driven frugily.
Mines 7 yrs old but looks & drives like new.

I have a GTI 150 PD Exclusive, which I bought off my father last year, it's been a great car, being the exclusive it has full cream leather which is heated, headlight washers, multi function steering wheel, VW Sat Nav which not only displays on the main unit but displays and replicates onto the main centre display on the clocks, many only have the half display but mine has the full display and it's a god send, it's only done 67k with a full main dealer history so is still a spring chicken... I bought this car after weeks of research into the purchase, I wanted a Golf GTi, always have, it was just a case of whether to go for the 1.8 or 2.0. Thats what I thought until during my research I came across numerous write ups on the 1.9 diesel PD150. Higher MPG, lower depreciation, better performance, the choice was made for me, and I am pleased it was.
The car returns 45 MPG running to work and back, 55-60MPG motorway runs. When I want it to the acceleration makes me grin from ear to...

For the first three years I was not impressed with this car, the handling verged on dangerous and it was in and out of the dealers. The turbo and ECU were replaced unnecesaraly (Air mass sensor was the cause!). They even managed to dent the floor pan!
As soon as it was out of warranty got bilstein dampers, which tranformed the cars handling. (Later cars seemed to be better) And once away from the main dealers the car has been pretty reliable now at 185000 miles and going strong. Nearly...

Over 50mpg in real-world conditions. A great car which, in countries with high fuel prices, makes petrol cars look rather silly. It won't rev like a petrol so can't be used as a true sports car but it is an a mazing daily driver- swift, frugal, safe and practical. The 6-speed 'box has a good feel and the revised damper rates, while still a little wallowy, transforms the feel of the car from the lower-end fourth generation Golfs.
Only fault I found with the car is the brakes were...

I agree with this review because this has been very similar to my experience. I viewed the Focus and the Mk 5 golf but found their interiors had a rather lower quality 'feel' to them and were not very inviting. My wife agreed, so there was no contest. The 150 body is not so stiff as the latest Mk5 model, so there is a little bit of a creak occasionally, a bit like an old athlete trying to get his act together. However, once the motor gets interested, it is off like a shot and I think surprises other motorists. It does not feel as agile on the bends as my previous 2 litre Citroen ZX and also the ride doesn't soak up the potholes and speed ramps with anything like the same aplomb, but it is a great long distance cruiser, having just gone to Manchester and back well into the 70's ( and a bit more) and returned an average in excess of 57mpg. The ZX 2Li petrol would be drinking more around 25 to the gallon of petrol at that speed. The gear change is much more precise than the Citroen and everything seems to be much better screwed together. All the clever little details reek of quality. The car had 11k on the clock when I bought it and now I am up to 19,000+. We both still think it is a little gem and besides the fuel consumption it also has a very low VED rating, about the same as my wifes cheapo Renault Clio. All in all this, so far, has proven to be a first class driving and financial experience. Unbelieveable.

OK so the Volkswagen Golf GTI may not be a Subaru or Boxster beater, but a good car all the same - and as someone said in their comments 50mpg and the performance (near enough) of the 4Motion - just a pity it's not so good when it comes to corners, or for that matter in the snow! (read more)

Performance is not really that good on these cars, I wanted one personally, but after driving the 1.8 T petrol and the PD 150, I know which I choose for performance. Horses for courses mate, TDi is great for fuel consumption, but on the whole, anyone wanting a fast car needs to be looking at petrol. TDi 150 has a 0-60 time around 1 second slower than the petrol, put both cars round the track the petrol will win, put them both in an endurance race with a full tank. TDi wins. see where this is going..................

VW Golf GTI TDI 150 mark IV.
All that said, I would still recommend the car to any body, although the new Audi A4 is a real competitor at this level.
If I now had to make the same choose I probably would have waited 6 months and got the new Audi 2.0 DSG TDI 140 BHP ( a little less power them my car), but the Audi is new and I don't know how green the grass is in Audi land, so take this recommendation for what it is.

I have now had my Volkswagen Golf GTI TDi PD 150 Family Car for a year and covered 31,000 miles. I am very pleased with it. Good value for money, long service intervals and economical with fuel. I get around 55mpg with a mix of motorway, cross country and town driving. It is at it's best around decent A and B roads - with firm road holding in all weathers and little rolling around corners. The comments re interior build are spot on. I think its a great all rounder but have a few rattles and a glove box door that now won't close. The Vw DIY forum goes into detail about how to fix it and you won't believe it....half the car has to be removed to renew the door! Poor design all round.
Written on: 30/07/2006
I disagree with poor design all round, more like some of the cars have been treated with slightly less respect possibly, maybe even when built, but many of the golfs out there are still spot on. They are usually high milage though when sold for the right sort of money, suggesting the car has had a bit of a life. I dont think a few squeeks for cars above 50-60k is all that bad really especially when the car if of such a high quallity otherwise. Compare it to a ford ka then it looks silent, compare to a roller and its very noisy. Most of even the prestige cars end up with squeeking and noises after 60k!
Written on: 01/08/2006
Fair comment about the squeaks. I accept that an older car will show its age, but my issue was around the design of the interior, not the quality of materials or construction per se. A quick glance at a Haynes manual reveals a certain amount of cynicism in the design....basically they don't want you to be able to do anything yourself. We all accept that much of the profit for main dealers come in after sales, but when you have to remove the handbrake cover to get the glove box out, you know there were hands being rubbed together when the MkIV was still on the drawing board!
Written on: 02/08/2006
LOL. Yeah, agreed!! Thing is though, its great to be able to fix your car yourself and be able to get cheaper garages to fix your car, but i bet the people who do such things are the first to be complaining about VW reliability when they go wrong! Personally I can understand the VAG reasoning, I don't agree with it, like yourself, but I can understand it to a certain extent.

As much as I am keen on the Golf GT TDI PD models (currently own 306 DTurbo), I haven't found any (even a PD150) that touches my Scooby. Standing starts are the Scooby's speciality 4x4 traction launches the car like a bullet. Once on the move I can avoid lag and make best use of torque by carefully selecting the right gear - this more than matches the good torque that turbo diesels have.
<br>
<br>On track/airstrip, well 3rd pulls to over 100, 4th to over 130 and 5th... well I know it'll hit 150+ on the clock and is still going... so handling a Golf on the m-way, isn't too much of an issue - Scooby can handle M3's comfortably.
<br>
<br>Its unfair to compare a 150hp warm hatch to a 300hp high performance lightweight saloon. I love the Scoob, and would love to have a Golf GT TDI PD also, but for now the 306 DTurbo will have to do! whether I get rid of the 306 or both it and the Scoob in the long run, I think (unless I win the lottery), the Golf will be my next purchase!
Written on: 05/07/2004
I can speak from experience my mate has the Golf and it is superb but compared with the Scooby it is a different ball game altogether (my mate compared it to a road legal bullet!)The sheer acceleration of the Subaru will guarantee that it will easily resolve any conflict that might arise between these two.
Written on: 13/07/2004
As for the GTI PD150 being a Boxster S eater, I'd say that's a bit optimistic too. The GTI has maybe 10ftlbs of torque on the Porsche but at least 100bhp less. I love VWs and have a 1.8T GTI myself. With mods it's putting down just over 200bhp and 240ft1bs to the wheels. It's a neck-snapper but still can't compete with my previous stock Boxster S top-end pull. At 100mph the "S" is just getting going up to its top speed of over 160mph. The little VW oil-burner isn't going to keep pace with that (my 1.8T will before I'm done with it though!)
Written on: 21/08/2004
Now lets not bring M3's into this arguement! My girlfriend owns a 140bhp (110 chippied) GT TDi and its fair to say that it is almost identical to, maybe a tad quicker, a 2.5 V6 vectra...so we're looking at about 8.0secs 0-60. As for the reality of the speed, most of the driving is done in a city so with the talk and low revs needed to drive in a city, it tends to catch nearly any car out and leave them in a cloud of diesel smoke. So in reality it will normally hold its own against most cars around town.
<br>
<br>As for on the main roads...diesel just cant match petrol i dont think (unless you buy a tourag!!). Petrol engines have the extra revs to out do a diesel....but at the end of the day, what you have to remember is....while all you scooby boys are cruising at 100mph on the motorway getting 25mph....i'll be sat right behind you getting 45mph! And when you have to pull over to get more fuel i'll cruise past with a pocket full of petrol money!
<br>
<br>Now....the M3 comment! I own a Z3M and I have to say...scoobys just dont quite have what it takes! Maybe you're thinking of the old M3's, but not the new ones! With 321bhp...there aint much that will beat them! And always remember that a de-restricted M3 evo will do 178mph! So while yor scoobys will beat a 150 Tdi, they wont beat me! ;-)
Written on: 24/08/2004
I own a WRX STi and a BMW M5 and i have to agree with the last comment the subaru might wipe the floor with the Golf but the M Series cars will rearange internal organs however the M3 reaches 62 in 5.5 Secs and so does the STi so comparing those two cars is almost impossible unless you de-restrict the M3 and then there is no question about the winner but what you guys need is an M5 then you can tell whoever you like to stuff there boasting down there necks!
Written on: 24/08/2004
hmmm, re the M5. me thinks an RS6 might have plenty to say about that. remember, no one (or at least not me) is dissing the Golf, i think they're fab. but just putting things into perspective so Golf owners don't embarass themselves thinking they can take on Scoobies.
<br>
<br>also, read this article if you all think M3's are so all conquering:
<br>
<br>http://bimmer.roadfly.org/bmw/forums/e46m3/forum.php?postid=3878033&page=1.
<br>
<br>i doubt the original posting about the golf is about total top speed, but more driveability and power delivery - therefore the fact that unrestricted M3s can do 178 is irrelivant. take a Scoob and an M3 and do a point to point test and you'll soon see that there isn't much the M3 can throw at a Scoob that it can't deal with or better.
Written on: 25/08/2004
I think we're getting away from the original point here! The Golf Tdi is a very good car....no other car seems to match the speed to fuel consumption ratio...so if you want a car that is 2.5v6 petrol speed but gets 50mpg, go for the golf!
<br>
<br>The M3 thing...that review is of the new Scooby, and I ain't seen many of them around cos people are scared to buy such an ugly car. I was comparing the scooby that most boy racers have and that aint as quick as the M3 evo. But then again, the scooby is the best that Subaru can throw at us....so lets compare a more suitable car...a Z8 or an M5...or even the new M5 with 500bhp. The main thing here is that M3's and Scooby's are very similar in speed and its mainly down to the driver who wins the race, but at the end of the day...the M series will always beat the best of Subaru. (btw...I actually prefere Mercedes...that's my next car, I just couldn't afford one this time! The SL600 will beat the pants off nearly anything, and if it don't, they can fall back on the SLR)

first of all you can't compare a diesel golf to a subaru you nutter..!nor can you compare a subaru to an m5/m3. however, i use to run a standard impreza turbo which i can quite safely say that with an experienced driver behind the wheel all three of you do not stand a chance, unless we are talking motorway..which a) is boring B)no fun. i currently have a very tuned up leon 150 bhp diesel which i can say i've kept up with the odd evo and m3 on the motorway, mainly because of the 400nm of torque so from 40-130 they can't shake me off.

Excellent review. I test drove both the 1.8T and 150TDi myself, have to admit the fuel consumption on the 1.8T in real life is only around 25 to 30 from most peoples experiences and TDi always seems to be around the 50 mark. In terms of everything else, equipment and extras, i was very impressed with both cars, makes it a hard decision which to buy. As i don't travel really far, then petrol won for me. But if i'd have travelled a long distance to work the TDi150 would have easily won for me too!
